Finally found a Sonoma 4902 School Bag. It's HUMONGOUS!
Here's the dilemma....it needs a bath. My concern is there is a separation/divider that has the shadow stripe lining covering what feels to be cardboard. Any thoughts on this?? Is it really cardboard in there?? I'm crossing my fingers it's not, because that would keep the whole bag outta the pool!

Although I can't give you a firm answer on your question, I can tell you of my recent experience with my Sonoma Flap (4903).

Instead of a center divider, my Sonoma has an oval piece of cardboard or plastic to add support to the bottom of the bag. When I dunked her, the lining was stitched so well and the fabric so tightly woven that there was a huge air bubble created under the lining. It actually prevented the bag from staying submerged in the water.

It was possible to squeeze the air out and persuade the water to flow through it. After the dunk, I worried that mildew would form on the inner leather, under the lining, due to the excellent "seal" created by the lining. Two weeks out from that dunk, I'm not smelling any mildew. Additionally, the base support did not seem to disintegrate during or after the process, leading me to believe that it is made of plastic rather than cardboard -at least for this style, made in the US in 1996.

(Thanks again to Hyacinth for the authentication.)

Nice find! I have a microfiber (no leather at all) kate spade messenger bag that feels like is has cardboard stiffening the bottom. I was concerned about washing it for the same reason as you but I finally gave it a sink bath and stuffed it with towels to shape it while it was drying, then I took the towels out and let it finish drying. The cardboard (or whatever it is) was fine, it dried out okay and retained the shape and structure of the bag.

I think that you will have to balance the need for a bath versus your concerns about the cardboard and possible damage and then make a decision.

If it were me, and it was so dirty that I wouldn't feel comfortable carrying it after just a surface cleaning, then I'd probably risk a bath - but it's up to you. Good luck!

It definitely needs a bath. I really won't carry it without one. Maybe I can do a quickie, MacGuiver one?? I'm so afraid if it is cardboard, it will disintegrate to the bottom.
Experts out there....was cardboard even used in Coach??

I don't know but I've dunked other bags that had some kind of stiffening and they didn't disintegrate. I think it will be fine. People have dunked Madisons and those also feel like there is cardboard inside.

Doing a quick dunk would be risky because if it doesn't to the job then you'll have to do it again. I think you should give it a normal bath.

I am seeing these on the online site and wondering if they could be useful for covering up icky spots on old bags, like ink stains etc. I have a bag I bought recently where someone added a snap button so of course when I removed it there is a hole it left behind. I thought this could cover it up. I wonder how permanent they are.:

I was thinking the same thing but I couldn't remember any bags I have currently that need it. I really like that bunny. I think they are pretty permanent. The site says one time use. If they had tea roses I would buy them.

BTW, if people don't have access to FOS, they can't see the link. There are a few threads where people have customized their bags with stickers and appliques. I know @K.E.W. has.

I can't venture a guess on the official color but wanted to say it looks 100% better than in the listing pics.

You know there's a Rehab & Rescue thread with tons of great advice. I'm sure most of the active rehabbers will suggest an application of Black Rock. It does bring a 'gleam' to the leather. I agree with them.
Is there another thread with advice on helping our bags? I didn't know, where?
And thanks for the tips added to the patent cleaning products, Pledge and Vaseline added.

Here is my latest rehab. It's a 2005 Rambler's Legacy in an unknown color, which is the prettiest blue. It kind of reminds me of Tiffany blue. The leather is not anywhere as nice as vintage leather. It is kind of stiff.

I don't know how was the before, but the bag looks like new, fantastic job and I also love that color!

Thank you. The color is gorgeous. In the listing, every picture showed a different shade of blue. I was really expecting it to be Federal Blue, so it was a happy surprise. It wasn't in too bad shape. The seller showed a large spot on the edging that turned out to peel right off in the bath. It isn't perfect now. There are a few faded spots on the front and a tiny bit of ink on the strap. I didn't use any paint or coloring. Instead of Blackrocks I used Saphir Creme Delicate, as I didn't want any darkening.

I think some of the briefcases have cardboard or something like it in the handles so I just try to keep them from getting too saturated (marinated? waterlogged?) when bathing. On non-Coaches I've dealt with cardboard by sandwiching it between 2 flat surfaces while drying. That's where your MacGyver skills come in [emoji39]

Ugh. 99% sure I just got my first shoe polish covered bag. It smells sooooo bad. I can't even describe it. Worse than musty.
It's a black 1999 9306.
The stitching on the outside is all black. Inside the bag the stitching is not black.
Where do I even start? Just start rubbing with acetone?
