How long does it usually take for a bag to dry?

I washed mine yesterday and it was mostly dry within 24 hours. I guess it depends on the leather thickness and how many pockets/layers it has and the humidity and ????? This is my first one so hopefully someone who has washed more than a few can give you a better estimate!

Thanks! Hopefully mine will be ready to condition when I get home tomorrow.

OK Girls..Here goes AAAARRRRRGGGGHH!!! ..That's me weeping & wailing today.
I just spent days washing, conditioning & pampering a bag that turned out gorgeous..only to decide last minute to 'gild the lily' and put a coat of Leather Honey on it.
It instantly pulled dark spots out of the leather that heretofore was not apparent.
DANG! What made me even madder was the fact this is not the first time this has happened (slow learner) So..In all seriousness..anybody not experienced with Leather Honey..Beware. It states on the label it can make defects look worse, but, since there were none I thought I was in the clear. (sigh) :(
Don't despair yet. I've had this happen with other conditioners. It's possible that after the conditioner soaks in, the spots will fade again. It might take a few weeks though.

I've had some take 3 or 4 days but usually it is 1 or 2.

Ok, thanks! I just checked it and the handles are about dry, but the rest of the bag is still soaked. Guess I'll condition the handles a bit in the morning. I'm excited to see how it turns out. Maybe next week I'll dunk and scrub my first Coach. (It will either be my duffle or the little crossbody)

You know, I'd never ever heard of bathing a leather bag until I joined this forum and became intrigued with the rescue/rehab thread. So rather than over-think the whole thing, I just did it. And I haven't stopped since. I've not once been disappointed with the results.

Thank you both for your advice! I'll decide about the dunk after I get through the couple of other bags in my rehab queue. Meanwhile, I can clean up the frayed edge. What a great idea to use the sweater de-fuzzer on handles! I do have one of those already.
I am so appreciative of everyone's help on this thread. :smile1:

You're welcome!

Actually 'patina' is probably the wrong term to describe the 'before' bag--it wasn't that it was darker before, it was somehow glossier. Instead of that soft, glove leather feel like my 90's bags it was firmer and glossier. This is the oldest of my bags, from around 1982 according to our experts on the Authenticate thread, so I didn't know if the leather was originally different on that particular bag, or if it was just from age.

With one or two more CPR treatments and a finish of Blackrock's I am hoping the luster it had before will be restored.

The first pic below is right after purchase; the second one is post-bath. Can you tell any difference? Perhaps I am just overthinking this one! :smile1:

Thanks as always for your advice!

I think when you get some Blackrocks on her, you'll see the difference. To me Blackrocks gives the leather a "glow" and you can buff to restore the luster.

I've also used a match to burn the fuzzies off. You do have to be careful not to singe the leather.

Ooohh...you're a brave one :)

Whateve and Two.time: Thanks for your input! Sorry I forgot about my earlier post (always so much info to digest)--I'll try to go back and look that up.
Stiffer and glossier is exactly how I would describe it. But my daughter seems to think the bag looks cleaner now, so I guess that is a plus. Have either of you dunked those old 80's bags and if so did you have similar results?
Anyway, on to more conditioning. I will post "after" pics once I'm finished.
Thanks!
Yes, I've dunked a few including this Saddle Pouch

http://forum.purseblog.com/coach-clubhouse/coach-rehab-and-rescue-club-833400-76.html

and this mahogany Basic Bag

http://forum.purseblog.com/coach-clubhouse/coach-rehab-and-rescue-club-833400-64.html

And I just dunked this black Basic Bag two days ago and applied the first coat of Leather Therapy this morning.

All three were really dry and the dunking and conditioning has definitely softened them up. I guess the main issue with them drying out is that they could crack and split so I think it's better for the bag in the long term if they are conditioned.

It depends on the ambient temperature and humidity. A couple weeks ago during a heat wave I washed a bag and conditioned her less than 6 hours later. It was 45C though and I only waited 6 hours because it was too damn hot to do anything! This week, the temp is down to 24C and the bag I washed the other day was dry enough to condition in 24 hours.

Wow it was hot! It's super freezing here -8f this morning.

I checked the bag this morning. The handles are dry and the body is returning to yellow so it is drying, but, still damp. I'm thinking it will be ready to condition tonight when I get home from work.

Has anybody dunked a crocodile/caiman purse? Would a bath benefit it like it does other leather purses?

Thanks.

I don't have any experience but would love to see pix. My guideline for something unknown is really if the bag is usable in the condition it's in. If it's going to be tossed or sit in the closet then I might try it. If it's just a matter of freshening I would probably try something more gentle.

A cigarette lighter works better...just gotta be careful with light color leather. Smells bad too LOL. Maybe I should invest in a sweater de fuzzer too!

Yes, I think so too. I just used Blackrock's for the first time on my little canteen bag and it turned out beautifully. At first, I was unsure because it left the surface a little tacky. But after letting it soak in and buffing a lot it is lovely.
