EBK v convertible clutch, continued (but not for long).
I followed Katev's advice, did another wash with Dawn, soaked, rinsed. Still produced dark grey water.
Had forgotten to check whether the strap (which had been my reason for buying the bag in the first place) had also been covered in shoe polish. Of course, it had! So, another acetone treatment, bath, soak for the strap. Water turned dark grey.
Put bag and strap into a large nylon perforated wash bag and put it into the washer, with extra water and extra rinse option( front loader machine). Used warm water and Tide detergent.
Stuffed and left to dry overnight.
This morning, I thought I would try rubbing with acetone again, just to confirm the bag and strap were finally shoe- polish- free. NOT SO. Still charcoal grey paper towel and old facecloth.

Having used more than half a quart of acetone, more than half a jumbo sized roll of thick paper towel, a wash cloth and too much soap and water to mention, as well as a couple of Tylenol tablets to get rid of the acetone headache on day one, what do you think I should do. Keep going or give up and try to make tassels?
I wish there were a way to vote on this thread. If you agree that I should give up, would you mind "liking" this post, please.
I think you've gone above and beyond the call of duty for this bag. You could keep it for parts, but I imagine at this point you might be ready to end the relationship! If the strap isn't too bad you might be able to sell it (and d-rings and the hang tag, if there is one) on eBay.

Thank you for your support! I hate to "put down" this poor bag. I don' t sell on eBay. I'll keep the strap, "harvest" the bits that might come in handy ( this reminds me a little of a recent PBS expose of possible organ harvesting from executed Chinese prisoners, omg) and try to make tassels. The leather on the bag and the one-sided hang tag are really nice and thick.

I was rooting for you but maybe this one is a lost cause. If you're not having fun anymore and it's no big loss, I'd ditch it. I have one I spent hours acetoning and never did get rid of whatever evil coating was on it so I gave up and upcycled it. Sometimes you eat the bear ... and sometimes the bear eats you [emoji846]

I'm not squeamish by any means, but I don't know if I could have gone as many rounds with the acetone. Sounds like you have fought the good fight. There are no prizes here for how much acetone you suck up so in my book it's totally any one's personal call.

Be strong! Look for a navy bag with tan trim you have in your rehab bin. I KNOW there is one there lol ;)
No these are actually in my closet on the floor under my clothes and I don't have navy. But like I said I don't need it! I have two Baxters, 3 of these, 3 Madison Sutton satchels and Gramercy that I'm still using currently. I definitely don't need to add one more. I will wait till my pile gets smaller and then see if there's room for one more after I clear the rehabs out.

If I thought more rounds of acetone would do the trick, I would keep going. I hate to lose a fight with this bag! Thank goodness this wasn't my first rehab attempt. As soon as I learn how to post photos from my iPad, I'll show my more successful efforts.

Maybe this could be your first attempt at dying a bag? Why don't you put it aside for awhile and you can decide what to do later.

I have given up on rehabs a few times, sometimes I go back to them but sometimes I don't - and I occasionally regret all the time and effort I invested in them if it is unlikely I will ever be happy with the results.

I now try to focus on bags that I think have a pretty good chance of success, but unfortunately there are some early enthusiastic impulse buys in my rehab pile!
