What do y'all do to fix this kind of damage? The duel end is kind of chewed up looking. Like a cat got to it. I kind of don't want to return it (Barclay tote) since I got for less than $50. View attachment 3667215

Any little leather flaps left on? You might stretch those when you dunk and glue down over the holes. Otherwise, I guess you're stuck with filling them.
I hope the description included the word 'delicious', as something apparently thought it was!
ETA: BTW, I finally tried puff paint and I'm a convert. Builds up much faster than Liquitex.

I usually blame the dogs for chewing and the cats for scratching. You are showing some ambition here. I will be interested in your results!

Is puff paint the brand name or type of paint? Is that something I can get at JoAnns's or AC Moore? I see that purchase in my future. When I get through dunking a pile of bags. Thanks

Yes, the kiss locks are leather covered. I would love to hear about your experience. If you would report back that would be very helpful. The bag is a NYC bag with a glued in registration number.. I will try the vinegar, too. I did not know that, so thank you.

I finally dunked the kisslock and it was a total non-event - it seems fine and is happily drying. I avoided opening the kisslock pocket wide and made sure never to lay the kisslock side facedown so it wouldn't create dents in the leather.
Mine used to have the glued in serial #, but it was already missing when I got it. I've read others saying they dunked those with no problem. You could prob. find those posts easily in a search if you wanted to double check for peace of mind. Good luck [emoji846]

If you realllly want a (unauthenticated) Swag Bag and a major project...Way more than I want to tackle, but there's plenty of talent on this thread! Expensive but it's BO.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/RARE-VINTAG...914296?hash=item1c8276e538:g:NN8AAOSwAANY8dbA

Yeah way beyond my capabilities! I agree the price is a bit much. Maybe the price will go down depending on offers received or lack of offers course.

Looks like it sold. I wouldn't have thought it was worth that unless it was in pristine condition.

Swag bags don't come along very often. It took me a couple of years to find mine. I think it was priced about right, and I'm not surprised it sold quickly. I like my Swag bag better than I liked the Pony Express I used to own.

This Courier bag that was kindly authenticated my Hyacinth arrived just a few days ago:
https://www.etsy.com/listing/509150960/vintage-coach-bag-coach-courier-bag-70s

I got it with great price but it did have some problems and I don't have solution for at least one of the problem that bugs me. First maybe I show some photos:
This was how the bag looked like when it just arrived. I have washed it, it's dry and I have put two levels of Chamberlain leather milk on it. I've just send it to the local shoe fixer to have some sewing job done, the reason can be found a few photos below.
1.jpg

There is a small shallow cut on the front right corner, about 1/2 in length, as can be seen also on the photo above. After the bag dried I put "repair gel" (some kind of fixing glue that's flexible and suitable for leather) with a toothpick inside the cut and let it dry. I don't know if the glue holds for long because it's quite shallow and I have since put leather cream all over it. Well it doesn't bother me that much...
2.jpg

Then there are a few small cuts (a few mm each) on the "tongue" of the flap. The mostly disappeared after washing and conditioning.
3.jpg

The reason I sent the bag to shoe fixer can be seen in this photo: some threads are loosen on the stressed part where the side panel and the flap are connected. In face it's fixed once upon a time by the previous owner and the fixed thread has got loosen also. I don't know how well the leather holds the further fixing because there are so many holes in a small area...
4.jpg

The thing that really bugs me is the strap, actually the middle part of the strap. Here is a comparison between the middle part and the "good" part near the edge. The seller described the strap as having signs of distress. It looked dry when it arrived but nothing alarming and not visibly darker.I washed the bag normally with warm water and some dish detergent, waited until the strap was mostly dry and applied leather milk. The whole strap WAS dry but the edges and the middle 1/3 of the strap behaved so very differently. The edges drank up the conditioner and are soft and nice, darkens a little but evenly. The middle part drank the conditioner and turned much darker ( as can be seen from the photo below. They were about the same color before conditioning, the middle part just looked drier), it feels rough and VERY easily scratched even I have put many levels of conditioners there already, and it gets darker with every level... Of course it's the part that gets the stress of holding the weight of the bag, but might there be some kind of rotting going on? It just has so different texture compare to other part of the bag... Have you more experienced rehabber seen something similar and what should I do next?

Thank you for the report. I appreciate it! I will dunk it and see what happens...

Getting much darker from conditioning is a sign that the surface has worn away, similar to the way scratches look darker when conditioner is added. There isn't much you can do to fix it. You could try a thin coat of leather cement or leather refinisher.

The middle of the strap looks like a buildup of oil and dirt...hand cremes, sweat, etc. will naturally accumulate there. This weakens the fibers of the leather. Since the area is already showing signs of deterioration, I would probably just accept that it is always going to be darker there, rather than continuing to work on it.
