Oh my gosh. Looks like a Bonnie Cashin kiss lock bag to me, although I'm far from an expert. If so great find. Does it have a fabric lining?

It does not have a fabric lining.

Gorgeous! I finished mine a couple weeks ago and posted here on page 67 thread #991.

Mine is pre-creed but doesn't have the leather covering the kiss lock - or maybe it did and it came off. She wasn't dirty but I dunked her and it certainly helped to re-hydrate the leather and made it a bit darker. Followed by 3 coats of Leather Therapy and finished off with Black Rock. Yours is going to be stunning when you're done! Please post here to show us.

Thanks for the advice. This one has a glued in number. I'm having a hard time uploading pics from my ipad.

I've been googling these and there are a lot both with and without a leather covered kisslock.

I think maybe the leather covered kiss locks are on the later bags. My double sided kiss lock which has a creed but no serial number (at thread #957) is leather covered and I've seen older ones without the leather.

I'm sure one of the experts would know.

Okay gang, another "patient" checked in last week. She was a steal at $35 shipped. I am trying to come up with her treatment plan, lol. She really is in pretty good shape except for the zipper. I could probably get away without dunking her, but I think I will anyway. My question is - should I dunk her before or after restitching her?. My plan is to undo the stitching along the edge where the zipper has pulled away, knot it off at each edge, add fray check to the edge of the zipper, trim the zipper edge off just a bit so I can get an unfrayed edge back under the piping, then restitch the edge by hand using two needles and a lockstitch, working in the original holes. I'll tie through every five or six holes to keep everything lined up before I undo the original stitching. So, dunk before or dunk after? Your expert opinions are welcome!

I would stitch before the bath...no sense letting that zipper get in your way...or fray any more than necessary. Good luck...I'll be watching for progress/results!

Here are some photos from one of my current rehab projects. This one has a long way to go before it is done but I think it's looking a lot better. The tan looks dark from the cleaning and conditioning but will lighten up in a few days. This poor bag has had a rough life. The first photo was posted on eBay, the second one I took right after it arrived. The last one is how it looks now. I feel like I rescued this one! :smile1:

It never ceases to amaze me what a rehab can do for a bag...looks new again...well done!

Here's the creed on this one:

If my memory serves me (lol) I thought the Registration mark (R in a circle) after Coach and the line of copy below the glued in registration number denote an earlier Coach Leatherware bag. I have 3 bags with registration marks that were authenticated as mid-70's. Those things were eliminated on later Leatherware bags. Yours is wonderful...I wouldn't hesitate to dunk if it were mine....unbelievable price too!

Wow. Great job. It doesn't look like the same bag!

Thanks - I had never heard about that distinction before. I have a couple of Basic bags I bought new in the early 80s with glued in numbers, and I'm going to see what their creeds look like.

I had wondered if I needed to do anything special because of the kisslock/coin purse. It seems to be in good condition though. The zipper, though, seems fragile.

Savers priced the bag at $34.99, but I got a 30% discount. I also bought a new looking british tan Court bag for $28.00, discounted from $39.99. It was a good day!

Great prices! Were they in the "Treasures" section? I don't think I've ever seen a bag in Treasures priced under $50. The only time I've found really great deals at Savers is when they make a pricing mistake.

As to the glued in serial numbers, I have a bag with a glued in serial number that came with paperwork dating it to 1980. I don't believe they used these in the early 70s because they hadn't registered their trademark back then. I believe the presence of a glued-in number dates it between 1978 and 1983. It is my theory that they started using the glued-in number after they had ramped up production to a point that there was a bottleneck at the numbering station in the factory, and this was a work-around, as it allowed them to add the number on later.

Recently there was a seller on ebay with two NYC basic bags, one with a glued-in number, and one with a stamped number. She told me she bought them both at the same time. If that is true, it means they used both the glued-in and stamped serial numbers concurrently.

At the Savers I go to they put the nicer bags on the ends of the long racks at the front of the store, attaching them with zip ties. So one the employees has to come and cut them down. As I said, I got them for 30 percent off.

That's very interesting about the glued in tags. I've seen people here say they were strictly in the 70s, yet my two Basic bags that I bought 1983 and 1984 both had them. So either the stores were selling old stock ( which I doubt) or they were doing exactly as you said.
