Waiting for authentication on the proper forum, but here I need to ask where could I find a replacement for the magnetic snap in this vintage Coach, (don't know name yet).

I have seen snaps on Ebay, but if I can find one I can use with the one that it is in the bag already would be great, I only need the top part, everything else is there. I think long ago Coach offered replacements, but I imagine no longer for these bags.

EDITED to add that it has been authenticated as a Fulton bag, style 9898. Similar to the Mulberry so I imagine the snap was the pull up type?

I believe it was a magnetic snap. Coach's ad calls it a magnetic closure. Here are some close-up pictures from my Chauncey. I doubt Coach would be able to help. Your best bet is to try to find something close. You just need a magnet on the inside and something decorative on the outside.

How do you know if a bag has been treated with something to make it look better, like that wood and stuff etc? I have bag but the bag feels weird and overly stiff, not like leather. It feels stiff and not like leather. There's definitely something amiss here. I'll have to upload photos when I get home.
Sometimes they are stiff because they are fake! I discovered this too late on a few bags. Wood n stuff looks great if it is put on lightly, and doesn't make a bag stiff. If it is put on too thick, it looks and feels like rubbery plastic. Shoe polish might make a bag stiff. There are few other products people use that I don't have experience with.

Here's a listing on eBay for a Fulton that shows the snap head. The description says it's a magnetic snap, but that may not be correct.

If it were mine, I would contact Coach Repair ([email protected]) and ask them first.

I went through this with a snap on a wallet. I never did find a replacement, unfortunately.

Good luck...it's a beautiful bag!

Thank you for finding another Fulton, I guess I will ask Coach but I do not have high hopes either.

Actually funny you mention a wallet, because I was looking at a very distressed one with a similar snap, and I was considering buying it just to swap them, problem is I am not sure of the size. The wallet looks small.

I really appreciate your pictures, what I need is just like that, top part only that attaches to the underneath one just screwing it down.

It was a little scratched and dirty, nothing too exciting. But the dunk really helped and no damage to the lining.

Did you do anything special to keep the dye from running onto the lining? I just had a problem with this happening to a bag I dunked. As the bag dried, I had to keep checking and cleaning the lining and I put towels between the lining and any leather trim that might touch. The lining is fine now but overall, the dunk did not go smoothly. The lining was filthy so I had to use some stronger products than I would have liked (OxyClean is the suspect in this case)but I only used it on the lining and it only came into contact with the leather exterior when I was rinsing the bag. I really do love OxyClean for fabrics and I've heard of other people having success cleaning Coach fabric and leather trimmed bags by soaking them in Oxyclean but I've had problems using it twice now. Both times the fabric came out looking great but the leather... not so much.

I don't know much about Castile soap, but I used Dr. Bronner's unscented baby-mild. I'm not sure where I got it, probably Amazon. I think I bought it initially because I have really sensitive skin and tend to be allergic to lots of soaps. When I heard Coach used to recommend it for bathing purses, I decided to try it. I have the bars, but I believe there is a liquid form also. The liquid form would probably be easier to work with.

Well I picked up some Dr. Bronner's 18-in-1 Hemp Lavender Soap in liquid form. There are apparently 18 uses for this soap! I found it at Target. I like the way it smells and the reading material on the bottle is ... interesting. I will use this for my next dunk. When my husband saw it, he knew what it was immediately. He loves this stuff. Strange that I've never heard of this soap before. Thanks for the information!

In case it helps someone... ;)

When I have a bag that I want to dunk the lining but not the whole bag, I pull it out and submerge it in a small plastic tub with the cleaner of choice, I prop the bag up on towels, phone books, etc.... so the liner is "hanging" in the water. If the water doesn't reach the edges, then I do that separately when the bath is over.

To dry the liners in this case and all the others that can be pulled out, I use a clothes hanger with pins and let it dry like that, so the liner is not touching the leather.

World's least exciting rehab :p This 10-yr old slim duffle looked almost new when I got it except for a bunch of little puncture/scratch marks on the bottom. A naughty kitty? I glued down a couple big ones using a toothpick and conditioning made the rest more or less disappear. I didn't even dunk it but did use Leather Therapy in addition to the usual CPR and BR. It's a little poochy on the bottom, but those who live in glass houses... ;)

And yes. I need someone's embroidery scissors to clip those 3 threads at the top!

Beautiful bag, I can't see any kitty scratches! Very artfully photographed, too. How nicely it sits in the center of the Lazy Susan.

Help - I've run into my first uncooperative lining stain! No clue what it is - it's in the pocket of a thrifted Soho leather pleated tote. I've tried alcohol, baking soda, Dawn, Dawn + baking soda + hydrogen peroxide (tip - this will remove even old yellow pit stains), diluted Simple Green, and Oxyclean. These got out some but not all stains. Thinking of buying Tuff Stuff but thought I'd check with you guys first.

Anything better I should try? Should I just zip the pocket shut and get on with life :D

Thanks! The Leather Therapy helped a lot - I actually applied it after BR since the bag still looked 'meh'. Any artfulness is completely accidental!

BTW, I tried those scented metal polish wipes you use but the scent didn't agree with me, lol! Guess I'm sensitive. They seem to work pretty well but I wasn't able to get off the lacquer/varnish coating on brass - is this just user error on my part? I so badly want to throw away my steel wool.

They don't remove the lacquer on the brass, unfortunately. Sorry the scent didn't work for you, I know how that is. It does fade after a while -- or maybe I just got used to it. I definitely prefer it to Brasso.

Some people have mentioned using a Dremel on the varnish. I have a Dremel, but so far haven't gotten motivated enough to try it on a turn lock.

That's a great idea! I usually do something similar with bags where the lining can be pulled out. I will just pull the lining out, wash it and lay it flat on towels to dry. I like the idea of hanging it so the water runs down and out though. The bag I had a problem with had the lining attached so I could turn the bag inside out and clean the lining but couldn't pull it out of the bag. The bag is looking much better after several coats of CPR and Blackrock. I will probably use Leather Rescue next to cover the scuffs and bare places better than the Blackrock is working. I may even use some diluted resolene over the whole bag in the end to even out the shine. Fortunately this bag is brown so even though some of the paint came off in the bath, it is all evening out. I was really wondering if there is something like vinegar that can be added to the rinse to help with the color not running. I did add a little vinegar to the rinse when I dunked the problem bag but maybe I didn't add enough. Also, the bag may have had something applied to it like Leather Restorer that ran. The water was still brown after several rinses.

I've always had great results with shining brass with Blue Magic. It is the best product I've ever used and I've tried the moistened clothes that come in the silver pouch. I usually apply it with a cotton swab and rub it in a little. I will wipe off the excess with the other end of the cotton swab and polish it with a microfiber cloth. If the metal is extremely tarnished and rusty looking I will add a bit more Blue Magic with the cotton swab and use a bit of super fine steel wool to rub the gunk off. You would not believe how much blackness this stuff gets off brass. It's supposed to leave behind a protective coating that inhibits future tarnishing too. I've never had to repolish anything I've used this stuff on so maybe it does.

Blue magic!!! It's the best!! I rehabbed an English saddle several years ago. The brass bag loops and buckles cleaned up beautifully.

Ps. My stew is peaking out from under a towel. I can see it out if the corner of my eye. I'm dying to blackrocks it and I can't. I got home from work late and I have to go to bed soon : ( thank you for letting me cry on the collective shoulder.

Leave it alone and get on with your life!

ETA: I bought some Tuff Stuff and it didn't work any better than the stuff I already had. I have bought so many stain removers, thinking that the latest will finally work miraculously. It never happens.
