I have not been here in a while, but today I wanted to stop and thank whoever first shared the tip to using this product, because it helped to make a very nice (not as new of course) difference on my scratched brass hardware.

I tried Brasso first that cleaned it but made no difference in appearance, then sanded it very slightly and applied the Rub'n Buff.

Pictures of the before and after and the product itself. Thank you! :smile1::tup:

Very nice! The bag that you polished looks like a Coach Madison bag. I just picked up one and trying to spruce it up. Do you use any product to clean the leather of the bag?

Hey now! I wonder if that would work on this:

Thanks! Yes my bag it's a Madison. It didn't have stains, so I just used some Coach Leather cleaner, then some Leather Therapy to moisturize. The brass hardware was the worse and although not perfect, but it looks better.

I believe it will help specially if the scratches are not deep. There are at least two shades of the gold, the Gold Leaf and the Antique Gold, you will be able to match the color that you need.

Another thank you and this time IIRC Whateve is the one that deserves it.

Puff paint for peeling and cracking edges. I have read the conversation going on, about different products. I only have the puff paint in brown and black, and the black Edge Kote. I agree that Edge Kote is the "pro" stuff if you want to fix your bags properly, but you need a lot of patience that I do not have, LOL

The puff paint works for me, most edges are in different shades of brown if not black, so I mix them together till I get the color I need, then apply with the best tool of all, a toothpick!

My before and after.

Very nice! I picked up some puff paint today but they only had bright colors and white and black. I picked up the white and black thinking that I could just mix in some acrylic paint (haven't read label yet so not sure what it is made of) or just paint over it. I may order some in brown too. Haven't tried it yet but looking forward to it. Great job!

I have a new question unrelated to my major makeover bag. I decided to clean a Coach wallet. I soaked it in a mixture of Dawn and OxyClean (my fav for soaking things) for about 3 hours and the paint peeled off the edge of the tag! (see pic) Has this ever happened to anyone else? Did I soak it too long? Was it the *gasp* OxyClean? The wallet looks pretty clean and nice besides the paint peeling off the tag. Some of the ink marks on the tag and piping faded a bit too. I did just pick up some cream acrylic to touch up the piping so I guess I'll be touching up the tag too!

I had this happen with I dyed a purse with RIT dye. I always assumed it was because the water was too hot but maybe it was from sitting in the water too long.

When I first started to read this thread, I remember reading only dunk your bags for about 15 mins. I have been doing that all along and never had that problem.

I believe three hours in water was definitely too long, specially if starting with hot water. You should be able to fix it with the paint.

whateve, the water was lukewarm at best. The paint is still firmly attached to the top and bottom of the tag. It's almost like whatever process was used on the top and bottom missed the sides. Maybe some kind of heat sealing or a top coat? I don't know. I just hope it wasn't the OxyClean! I've been using that for years now with 99% good results. Usually if something goes wrong, it's my fault and I can figure out what happened... Like soaking a white thing with a brightly colored thing in the same bucket with OxyClean (not a good idea). That leads me to the next thing I've been wondering about. Is it safe to bath a 2 tone bag? Navy with British Tan trim for example? I worry that the Navy will bleed onto the tan. I've been looking through the bag restorations and haven't come across a 2 tone purse yet. I just found a bag on the bay last night and bought it but I'm wondering if I should bath it when it arrives. I'm really dying to try this out. I want to do a restoration that doesn't involve dye. I will have to repair the edging on the strap though. I've bought gel medium and I'm thinking about ordering a bottle of the Tandy Edging. It can be mixed with acrylic colors and according to the instructions, only takes 2 coats.

Was that a pun? :D

I have rehabbed a two-tone bag, a black Dinky with British Tan trim. I had to clean off a layer of shoe polish with acetone before I dunked it, so the poor bag had really been through chemical "stress."

It came out fine, no bleeding. The piping is slightly darker overall, but I think that would have happened anyway.

It might help to see a picture of the bag you're asking about, since different types of leather behave differently.

Is the navy part fabric or leather? Coach fabrics, even dark or bright, are mostly colorfast (not saying all of them though). I just successfully machine washed fabric Ashley hippie with bright floral pattern. With dark colored leather it's much riskier, but you probably know that already. Let us know how Tandy Edging works when you're done. On Edge Kote it doesn't say you need 8 layers or so, but some of us know otherwise ;)

Did any of you ladies ever had a problem with yellowish water residue left on lightly colored fabric bags after they've been washed (hand washed or machine washed, doesn't matter), thoroughly rinsed and air dried? I always have this problem, on all kinds of fabric - satin, jacquard or cotton. I suspect it's something in my local water which is totally safe for drinking and using otherwise, but probably has some excessive amount of iron or some other element. Re-washing doesn't help, it's either leaves more stains when the fabric dries off, or removes the initial stains, but leaves new ones in different places. I even tried to partially dry it with hair drier, that didn't help much, either. Any theories and suggestions are appreciated!
