I picked up a used Citron Legacy Leigh 11128 to rehab. Since I think this bag is vachetta (or so it says for a few of the other colors on Ebay) I did not dunk it but just cleaned it with Lexol non darkening formula.
There are a few spots on the front that I thought may be transfer stains from something else, but then I started wondering if it is possible the real color of the leather under the dye
Coach used is peeking out? Does anyone have any experience with this bag or opinions on the spots? I am not sure if I should spot cover with paint and conditioner, or if I am trying to remove transfer. Help!! lol.
Wait for Ledobe. She has rehabbed several Legacy bags. She even dyed one.
well hellooo! are you talking about the yellowish brownish spot on the front left? are there more of those that are less visible? If conditioner didn't budge it at all probably nothing else will, so I wouldn't bother with dunking unless it's really dirty everywhere else, which it doesn't appear to be. When you dunk this leather it doesn't always dry evenly and you might end up with more water spots. and possibly more darkening of the leather underneath.
And yes, I think with some colors the vachetta leather tans and darkens underneath which ends up making it look yellow. I try to keep all of mine in a dust bag when not in use for this reason, but since I'm cheap and will no way pay $400 for an almost perfect legacy bag, most of mine have come a little yellowed anyway. I think you have to just accept it with the legacy leather and just consider it part of the experience.
If that spot isn't coming off you could try to match it with acrylic if you think you can-I'm not good at that myself, it's an art I haven't mastered. However I think even if you get a perfect match now this leather softens and changes color with use so it might not match later.
As far as touching up the leather, what I have done is dunked and used woodnstuff leather refinisher on a white Ali that was super dirty. I got the bag cheap-like $30 and was willing to risk it. It came out clean but I felt like it still looked yellowed and dirty and I was very happy after it after the woodnstuff. I described the process in this thread-or maybe in the previous version. Almost any white leather bag essentially has a painted on coating as opposed to a leather stain which is more transparent.
I also picked up a clay Gigi at Buffalo Exchange for $50. This bag was DIRTY and really discolored. There was no way I wasn't dunking it. I knew there was no way I was going to match the original grey so what I did was essentially a color change with woodnstuff. There's info about this in the thread too. I actually carry it a lot and it looks fine but I don't think you want to do that with your bag either-this bag was pretty messed up overall.
I also dunked a natural Mandy and it was truly a non event. I think I risked causing water spots because like I mentioned the thick leather dries slowly and you can end up with spots like you spilled water on it-I think that actually happened on the bottom of the Ali which is another reason I used refinisher on it. Luckily that didn't happen with the Mandy which was also very dirty. The leather is now lovely and it's one of my fave bags, the last time I carried it I set it on a shelf in the bedroom and I haven't put it away yet because I just enjoy looking at it. I actually carry it more because it's not perfect.
So, if I had to guess the only way to fix that spot would be to match with acrylic but you may not be happy with the results long term. I can't tell how bad it is in the picture but I do think at some level you just have to accept aging and flaws. a close up picture might help?
I don't have time this minute but I planned at some point today to post what I've been working on with my pond satchel-may not be relevant to your bag either.
