LOL! I immediately ordered some Lincoln E-Z too!

Yesss!!! I've got a couple bags that I'm about to list that have ink on the suede side! Good to know there's something that will fix it :woohoo:

Is Lincoln ez cleaner or Kelly's Lynn sold in any stores?

The lincoln ez cleaner is supposedly sold at walmart...this product also works, it claims, on "smooth leather "

Hope this helps
Before you all get excited, I got the hint about Lincoln E-Z from some thread in another forum. I can't remember which one, but it was some premium designer. Someone used it to clean interior suede on a designer bag and it worked. I've tried it on many bags but the only one it worked on was a Dakotah. It might have something to do with it being pig suede.

I got the Kelly's Lynn from Amazon. Recommended by another very experienced rehabber. Works great on suede bags and the inky interior suede. Took a few applications to remove the ink.

I tried Kelly's Lynn suede cleaner on the suede inside of an ivory bag and it removed almost all of the ink spots. Tried Soil love on strange grease, coffee, mystery spots on the outside of two bags while they were soaking. Used a fingernail brush and scrubbed. Very happy with the results. I would do it all over the bag because I wrecked a third bag trying to use it just on the spots. Spots came out, but now they are lighter than the rest of the bag. (Still working on it!)

Came across a leather worker website that they use oxalic acid solution to remove dirt, fingerprints and grease spots. They don't recommend acetone (?) Oxalic acid is sold in hardware stores to use for removing rust stains. I am hunting for that leather site link.

This leather degreaser might work too. I might get some for a chair and a jacket to test it out, before I use it on a vintage Coach bag! :graucho: http://www.furnitureclinic.com/Leather_Degreaser.php

Good luck with your project!

Thank you so much for your input, I actually was coming to say that I was giving up, because after trying all that I mentioned, I started to check into professionally get it dyed, but couldn't find anybody in my area to do it, after several phone calls I finally got a tip of a place that "might" do it about 2 hrs away. I called them, explained what I needed done, and they want to see the bag in person to determine if they would do it or not. I can not take time off from work to do that (not open in weekends), so as I said I was giving up. Now at least I have a couple more product to try.:smile1:

Not all bad these past few days, I got another 2 cute bags that I need to photograph and get authenticated. These ones I know I can make beautiful again, no big problems only recondition.

Hello to the rehab experts! I recently had this classic/vintage bag (Taylor zip) authenticated, and now it's time for me to start the rehab process.

I've been reading a lot of these threads, and there is SO much info. First things first: I'm starting with a bath! Quick question before I start, though: she likely needs a repair to the piping (see two corners below). Do I need to do this before soaking her in the water, or after? I just don't want the water to cause any damage in those areas...

One corner is pretty bad (this is the one I'm most concerned about):

The other isn't so terrible:

Any advice/tips are appreciated!

I always do the bath before the repair. I've had bags with worse damage than that in the corners and it didn't get significantly worse from the bath. I like to do the repair at the end because I can't match the color until the bag is conditioned. You could put some leather cement in the holes before the bath if you wanted.

Great - thank you! You're my guru when it comes to this bag, hahah ;)
I'll be sure to post updates while it's in process, etc.

Good to know. I'll probably go ahead and buy the Kelly's Lynn on Amazon since I actually don't have as much of an immediate need for it anymore since the bag I was going to use it on just sold as is! :yahoo:

Like whateve, I dunk first and repair last. The leather glue/cement I use is water based so I think it might dissolve if it was used first.

It is very hard to get a smooth edge with Edge Kote. On one of my Sophias, the edge coating came off in one piece so I glued it back on. For some other rehabs, I found that building up the edge with fabric puff paint was a little smoother than Edge Kote. Someone else recommended a product sold by Tandy that works better than Edge Kote.

I doubt you'll get much money for it unless you fix it to a usable condition. Most people don't want to deal with problems.

I would be mad that I didn't at least get my $20 back from Coach. It's a shame they didn't fix it. I wonder if it is because it is shredded. That looks more like it came from carrying something too heavy than from a manufacturing defect. It almost looks like you need a new piece of leather there. I don't know how you would match it.

Thanks for the input! I saw a tutorial on a blog that said they put like 5 thin coats on and then sanded it even and then did one last coat... But if you're saying I could do all of that and it still might not be even is concerning.

I'm thinking now maybe I should just try to sell it as is and leave the rehab work for bags I want to keep. I'm really just trying to get my $20 back with selling lol - based on some of these that have sold I think that is reasonable, but if not that's okay. I just don't know what to do with it. I guess if it doesn't sell I can try my hand at fixing the issues, if nothing else for practice. The rest of the bag is in good condition, some corner wear but overall pretty good for how much she used it.

I do think you're right she was probably carrying something too heavy. I did tell her this one wasn't for laptops, but I think she did have a small laptop in it, but now that I think about it the larger bag like this one did have an actual laptop space and I think the straps were attached the same, so you would think the construction in general was an issue- esp for a tote which by definition (mine anyway) is for holding more than the usual handbag. It's okay though, she got a decent amount of use out of it and I did get a 40% letter which I wasn't expecting because I thought they stopped that process, but on a whim last night I called about a bag that was sold out and they had one in stock and it's supposed to be delivered tomorrow :) will reveal but I don't want to jinx it until I have it in my hands!

Question for you rehab pros: do you dunk EVERY bag you get? I've gotten a couple recently that don't seem that dirty and was thinking of just using the Leather CPR to clean them a bit.
Not every bag, but almost every all leather bag. I am more conservative with lined bags. I'm careful with Sheridans, Italian Madisons, and newer lined bags. I have one leather vintage bag I found in perfect condition so I didn't dunk that one, but other than that, even if a bag doesn't seem dirty, there are benefits to a bath. The leather plumps up from the bath and the bath gives me a chance to reshape the bag.

I dunk just about every bag I get because most of the time they need to be reshaped and that's the only way to do it.
