Very, very discouraged today. My stroll bag with all the splattered stains is not getting any better. I still can not figure out what the stains are, and how in the world could be on both sides of the bag and also some inside, what did they do to this purse? Was it on purpose to damage it?

I tried Dawn soap, saddle soap, Murphy's oil soap, laundry stain remover, rubbing alcohol, acetone, peroxide, talcum powder, cornstarch, hand degreaser (what mechanics use), car degreaser (for different uses on vehicle parts). The only things I have not tried are bleach and vinegar.
I have done it to two spots inside, and wow! I can say with all certainly that the Coach leather is awesome! It doesn't even look damaged after all my tries, not even loss of color, I am amazed. I have it in water now and meanwhile I am learning about dyes.... not happy. I guess it was too good to be true.

I wonder that instead of it being a stain that something was done to it that removed the original color. Did you try TSP? I used that once - it will remove the brass coating on the hardware. If you do decide to dye it, RIT makes a color remover that will lighten it all over so nothing will show through the dye.

I never heard of TSP before, I will research it, thanks for the tip.
I am preparing myself to use the dye and make it be another step on the process of learning how to rehab, but I wished I didn't have to do it with this particular bag, when there are some that seem to be dozens of them for sale all the time. Oh well, I knew of the possibility, took a chance. I will let you know what happens at the end.

I've had terrible luck with dye. The only time it has come out okay was when I used Leather Refinisher to cover stains. Then I mixed it with conditioner and only used it on the stained parts. Every time I try to dye an entire bag, no matter what product I've tried, it always came out streaky and uneven.

What a shame! It might be worth getting it professionally re-dyed if you can find someone who can do it.

I just posted on the authentication thread, that I got old paperwork with a couple bags, in case someone wants/needs scans for their archives.
One thing they have is the Care and cleaning instructions, where they say do not attempt to clean grease or ink, because it will be worse. So I guess the good Coach people, didn't know that in the future there will be a clever and resilient group of ladies, that get to "care" for their bags in very innovative ways. ;)

Now I have a question for you, that for sure know more about this site than me. I was just wondering if it would be OK or is against some rule, to try to exchange hang tags.
I know that Coach would replace them if missing, but with the vintage bags they send brass or silver. I just got a bag with extra tags that I do not need, and I would love to get one that matches better a vintage brown, instead of asking for brass.

Anyway... let me know, I do not want to get in trouble, and thank you all in advance.

Wow! What a pity. That's a very special bag and I would agree with the opinions of having a professional to dye it, instead of trying yourself.

Once I considered to do it to one of my bags, I learned of different ways to darken the color or making it black, using "the old ways" instead of dyes. I thought that I could try first and if nothing worked, use the dye. I can not tell you how it ended because that bag (not Coach but real leather), is still at the very bottom of my rehab pile, no time for that when I have many more to do, but one day.... ;)

Any way... good luck!

Welcome. We all learn lots from each other here and share our frustrations and successes. We'd love to see your first two projects. It only takes one and you'll be hooked!

There is a thread somewhere showing someone using one of the "old ways" and it was a disaster. I can't remember exactly what was used but the bag looked horrible afterwards.

Was it the one of vinegar and rusty nails? LOL I wouldn't mind trying weird stuff, if I knew at the end I could use the regular dye and fix it, specially if the bag is not rare or expensive.

I have a quick question, because I have checked my notes and I can not find it. Which one of the leather conditioners tends to darken the leather? TIA

It was something like that. There was a name to it but I can't remember what it was.

I've been told that neetsfoot oil darkens permanently. Blackrocks and Leather Honey darken but I think it is temporary.

I've found Leather Therapy, Obenauf's and Black Rock can darken a really dry bag but I think they actually restore the colour to what is was originally. Here's a before and after example.
