Yeesh! Good to know. I have a Fossil bag that I've been debating throwing in the washer since it's coated canvas, but maybe I shouldn't after all.
I have washed lots of Fossil bags with no problems. Pebbled leather, patchwork leather and suede satchels and canvas 'Key-pers' with leather trim and others. I only wash by hand in lukewarm water, however I do chuck the canvas ones in the washing machine to spin dry.

LonesomeOctober I don't think I would try hair dye. But I can tell you what I have used for scratches and stuff like that on darker bags. I had the Dooney All Weather Leather green bag that had quite a long scratch on it. That leather is tough as nails so I don't know how it got a scratch like that. Ah I digress. Ha! Anyway, I found the exact match in one of those large boxes of Crayons. I just used a really sharp edge and ran along over the scratch. Just use a light hand and go in the direction that lays the scratch down.

FYI crayons are excellent to fix scratch marks on wooden furniture too!

Your Williamsburg wax sounds like it works like my crayons! Did you use it all over the bag like a dye or just repair spots?
I have used crayons also on bags. I have touched up the tan leather piping and duck logos on AWL bags. I have also used those cheap colored marking pens you get in a pouch at the dollar stores. I used one on a dark green Essex bag then rubbed in CPR getting great results.

How do you guys know if shoe polish was used on a purse? I don't really know what to look for. Is it bad because of the uneven look or the splotchiness when it is washed?

I have never considered myself a rehabber (and still don't), but I really do like all the info I am learning here. I have washed many a purse though. I just can't stand the thought of other peoples yuck in a purse I want to carry. (I think I recently read someone else here felt the same way)

I bought the cutest Coach bag a couple of years ago. It had a huge glob of hardened gum on it. I put on rubber gloves and carefully scraped off the gum. It had been on there for so long (probably years) it was very difficult to remove. Anyway, I finally got it all off but it left a fairly large discoloration on the bag. I threw it in the washer. The gum spot was hugely visible. The spot was several shades lighter and slightly bigger than an old silver dollar. I used saddle tan shoe creme on the spot. It matched perfectly and looks great. Is shoe creme and shoe polish the same thing? Did I mess up my bag by doing this? Right now it's just for me, but I am very fickle with my purses. Have I ruined my chances if I go to sell it?

I'm glad I'm not the only one! Ha! Ha!

I have used those too, OldBagLover. I think the trick with the markers is always go a couple of shades lighter because they always seem to show up so dark on leather.

Something else I have tried is furniture markers. The pack I have come in three shades of brown. They seem to match a lot of the saddle and British tan colored purses.

I have used furniture markers too! Can't find my set at the moment but I have the extended 8 or 9 pack. I used to work at a frame shop (still do occasional work for a local museum) and learned a lot about touching up frames both new and old. Many aspects seem like a natural crossover from wood frames to leather bags.

Oooohhhh! An 8 or 9 pack! Where pray tell do you buy those? Is that just something you get from the frame shop?

My patchwork tote looks surprisingly better. It no longer looks like :hs: She's still drying but I'll post photos tomorrow.

In the meantime, I have this Peyton Flap I want to dunk but it has a rather nasty spot on the bottom and I'm wondering what might give me the best outcome-- if I should pre-treat it with something? I'm worried about scrubbing because I might damage the finish and this would be a hard color to touch up (I already have to figure something out for the corners). I'm not sure what the spot it but I reckon something oily.

Perfect! The bag that I've been wanting to wash is a coated canvas key-per bag (minus the key.) I've been meaning to hand wash some sweaters I've found while out thrifting. Maybe I should just throw the bag in the soapy water while I'm cleaning!

Maybe spray it with a grease removing laundry spray before dunking.

If it is in good shape, a brushing might be enough. I bought one on ebay that had a huge stain on half of the bag. It just looked like a shadow in the pictures. It was still there after a bath. After that, I decided not to take any more chances with nubuc. I had rehabbed a few before that but they didn't have any major problems. The color doesn't refresh like leather does - you know how you can buy a faded leather bag and after the rehab, the color is darker and richer? That doesn't happen with suede or nubuc. I was a little disappointed because the color seems a little drab.

I was thinking of dunking my nubuc hippie flap but did a search for "nubuc" on this forum and Voila! from just a few days ago. Does that mean the color actually came out duller after you dunked it? (I'm assuming you dunked it...?) I was brushing my bag and realized there are a bunch of marks (just water splatters I think) on the front flap and was considering dunking it to even it out. No go?

I've dunked several Sonoma nubuc bags. The are not as rewarding to rehab as smooth leather but dunking does get rid of simple stains. Have you tried an eraser and just brushing the nap? Sometimes that is all that is needed. If you do dunk, start brushing while it's still damp. That will raise the nap and soften it.

Just sold it to a US buyer! The exchange rate is really bad for me but good for the rest of the world. That bag is a traveller. China to US to Oz back to US!
I had to cancel the transaction for my XL Bleecker Duffle because the seller didn't pay even when I opened a no pay claim with ebay. Only one reply to my many messages, promising to pay within 24 hours. That was 3 days ago. Sometimes It appears that people think they don't have to reply to you if you're not in the same country! It happens often when I ask buyers questions. They just don't respond. It's really rude.

Anyway I sold it immediately to another buyer who also paid immediately.
