I was cleaning up a bag and I saw what looks like a staple clasp thing on my bag (I have had it authenticated on PF) have you seen this before?

I really can't tell for sure where it is. It looks like maybe they used a staple to hold the leather together when they stitched it? If that's the case it wouldn't be a big deal to remove it, because it was probably meant to be removed. However-I can't see it well enough to tell so don't trust me! Maybe someone else has seen this in the past and knows what it is.

I wouldn't mess around with dye for something like that. Way more potential for ruining what looks like a great bag.

You might always be able to see it yourself, but it looks like something that would get better with some conditioning. It's under the flap right?

It seems to be improving with conditioning. After letting the conditioner (blackrock) set in, the ring seems to blend better. It's just that Iight spot in the middle. The ring is located underneath the flap.

When I wash the purse, the ring seem to diffuse outward a little bit. I might wash it one more time....or I might condition it for a week.

Thanks!

Hi ladies (and gents?)

Can I just jump right in? I have a value world find, and it needs HELP! I just had in authenticated here... I'm thinking maybe dyeing it a darker brown and polishing the hardware, getting an antique brass and matching suede or leather tags to dress her up.. Poor thing, I wasn't that into her at first, she's so dirty and stiff.. But the lining is really nice and it hangs beautifully... It's suede? I have had really good luck with that color, just scrubbing it down with shout or other srtain removers and laundry soap. You can pretty much treat suede like stained fabric, the biggest worry is fading, but that color doesn't really fade, at least not noticeably.

I've run mine through the washer after scrubbing really well. I'm on my phone but if you search this thread for my eyelet duffle and the older thread for my shearling bag you'll see what I've done.

Hi everyone,

I recently saw a navy vintage coach bag on ebay which I would like to get but the seller mentioned that the bag might have been treated with suede protectant previously as it has a stiffer feel...I am wondering if the suede protectant can be removed by bathing and moisturising the bag? kindly advise.. thanks in advance!

Good question.. My suede bag feels very stiff too
If you bathe it, it might soften up, but I think a bath might initially make it stiffer. I think if a bag wasn't dirty but just stiff, I would just brush it really good with a suede brush, or even some fine steel wool. You could moisturize it on the smooth back of the leather (you can't do this on a lined bag). I know some people have oiled their suede but I think that is pretty risky.

Then again, the stiffness might just be caused by dirt.

I spray my suede boots and bags and I don't think the spray makes the suede any stiffer.

thanks for your reply whateve. I forgot to mention in my earlier post that the bag is not a suede bag, it's a cowhide leather bag. not sure why the previous owner would put suede protectant on it. do you think the protectant can be washed away with a soak and bath or will it likely to stay stiff? i really like the color but if it's gonna stay stiff then maybe i'll just give it a pass.

A leather bag that's stiff could also be dry and need some conditioning. Just a thought.

My suede bags that I've washed do end up stiffer when they dry, btw, and I'm too afraid to oil them because I think it would be hard to get it even and not end up with oily spots. It is really important to rinse super well because the soap will stiffen it for sure. The last couple times I washed a suede bag in the washer I put some Downey in the final rinse. The bag seemed softer, but I'm not sure whether it was the Downey or not. Either way it didn't seem to hurt.

Brushing with a suede brush and just using the bag, however, seemed to gradually soften it.
