You can dunk vachetta. It tends to darken around the edges but I don't think it looks bad. Then you can use the vinegar to lighten it. I think I have heard that Cadillac conditioner is the best for vachetta. I've never tried it.ok, considering buying a vachetta thats been darkened w/ conditioner..so what is this about not dunking vachetta? I'm too lazy to go thru back posts..wipe it down with vinegar..wash the lining and use just obenaufs...some of what I read..I have LT wash.. some help sil vous plait..
CHEERS ALL !!!!hot & sunny here..sending some your way ladies!!
so just use straight acetone and a rag? What about color loss? It's really hard to remove. I think you could try acetone. Try to get pure acetone rather than the diluted acetone nail polish remover.
I don't think it will affect the color of the original leather much. I've used it on vintage bags and it didn't hurt the color at all.so just use straight acetone and a rag? What about color loss?

I use craft pliers and snippers. A set of 4 cost about $5 from a craft warehouse. There's some info and links to pics here at post #6410. Brass is so soft and malleable it's not hard to manipulate.

definitely! The acetone dries out the leather. You will want to wash it to remove the acetone, then condition to restore the moisture.Would there be a need to wash the bag and condition after?

If you notice loss of color on the corners, those are easily fixed with a tiny amount of acrylic craft paint mixed with conditioner. If you are able to remove all the shoe polish and let the texture and the glow of the leather show, your bags will be beautiful.
Sounds like a great plan. Good luck. Please post after pics here!Ok great! Off to buy acetone... My "plan" is to do as I have been researching... Wash in something like dawn, ivory or woolite, soak and rinse in clear water. Block with towels and just before completely dry condition with leather CPR, wait about 24hrs maybe condition again if needed, then I've heard to use blackrock, and burnish the leather with a horsehair brush. I will tint with craft paint because the piping had a little color loss. I have already cleaned brass.
Does that sound like a "plan"?or do you have some other suggestions? BTW I have complete "instructions" from a post on tPF!!
THANKS whateve!!

It's sunny here too. Not hot though, so I guess you didn't send too much!
So what do you do about musty odors? I have a bag that wreaks right now. I've wiped it down with vinegar and now its sitting in a sealed off rubbermaid with a little cup of baking soda.Well, old Crusty the dusty musty Watermelon bag has had a baking soda musty detox, bath and brass polish. Now, as Crusty is drying, the odor of wet leather and 20 years of cigarette smoke are making my guest bath a place to avoid. Ewwww.
Spritzed the bag with white vinegar and had a glass of wine. Will try more wine if the vinegar doesn't work.
