So what do you do about musty odors? I have a bag that wreaks right now. I've wiped it down with vinegar and now its sitting in a sealed off rubbermaid with a little cup of baking soda.

I sprinkled a few tablespoons of baking soda inside the bag and in all the pockets. Zipped it up and let it stay like that a few days. Got rid of the musty smell inside the bag. Probably a sealed off rubbermaid would have been better than just leaving the bag in the open, but the outside wasn't too bad. Then I opened up the bag and put it in the dawn bath with the soda still in the bag.

Still new at this.

Thank you so much! I bookmarked the page because there were so many gd tips!

You're welcome.

Well, old Crusty the dusty musty Watermelon bag has had a baking soda musty detox, bath and brass polish. Now, as Crusty is drying, the odor of wet leather and 20 years of cigarette smoke are making my guest bath a place to avoid. Ewwww. :faint:

Spritzed the bag with white vinegar and had a glass of wine. Will try more wine if the vinegar doesn't work.

Cigarette smoke will take a while to remove. I've used Febreeze. I believe there are other products that smell better! It needs to be reapplied every couple of days over a long period of time. My Sonoma Nubuc Flap was left hanging outside for two weeks before the smell was finally gone. Then I re-dunked to get rid of the smell of Febreeze!

SheriDahlin recommends coffee. I do too, but I prefer to drink mine as Febreeze is cheaper!

However if you decide to use coffee make sure the bag is fully dry before you shut it up in rubbermaid or Tupperware or it will go mouldy, whereas you can start applying Febreeze or similar while its still damp and you don't need to seal it inside anything.

You're welcome.

Thanks. I just Freebreezed the bag. Vinegar helped a little.

They make a Febreze that doesn't add its own smell. It's called Free Nature.

I remember reading that when they first came out with Febreze, it was a miracle chemical that removed odors without covering it up with another scent. It was a flop. Apparently people didn't believe it was working if it didn't have a scent. So they added a perfume and it sold well. They started selling the unscented kind only recently.

You'd have thought they could have found a better smelling scent than they did! I haven't seen Free Nature here.

All makes a pretty good smelling one (or at least they did when I was in college) that is their "Fresh Rain" scent. I want to say there's a frog on the bottle so you know that's it. Not very strong but still kind of a "fresh" smell.

Thanks for the freebreeze history lesson ladies! The bsg is smelling less smokey and more like the scent of freebreeze. I ran out so will hunt for a non scented replacement bottle.
Thanks for being so helpful!

How do you get rid of a cat pee smell on a vintage Willis bag. I gave her a bath but now she smell so bad. I guess the previous owners had a naughty kitty. The bag had so much wear. She looks good but smells terrible. What do I do, is she savable?

I think it is salvageable but it will take time. There are lots of things you could try. There are products designed for pet odors. You could try putting it in a plastic bag with carpet fresh for pet odors.
