I've never dunked nubuck but I think someone else has. I don't think you should condition them. I used an eraser and fine steel wool to clean mine.

ETA: Fels naptha is a kind of soap.

Hi, I have a couple of nubuck's that are lined. Do you completely dunk them with lining? Also, what is fels naptha? Is that mothballs? Also, when dunking a nubuck do you condition them or is that a no no? Thanks for any info.

Yes, I have completely dunked the nubuck with linings. Just the same as glove-tanned leather. I do not condition them. Just let them completely dry, then use your eraser and suede brush. They come up well. Fels naptha is a heavy-duty bar soap for laundry. I use it on stubborn areas. I have also sprayed stains with "Shout" before dunking. Hope this helps. I have found nubuck to be very forgiving.

Oops, forgot to add fuzzymummy's post.

Thanks. They are in pretty good condition, so I may just try the eraser and dry brush first to the one that has shiny areas around the top. It is a beautiful tobacco colour.

Excellent job. It looks professional. What a great idea to use the belt.

This one looks great too! I didn't know that "ball chain" was stamped on the chains of vintage bags until recently. I looked at my basic bag and it is stamped too. It seems amazing to me that after all this time my bag still has the original chain it came with.

Thanks! Isn't the "ball chain" stamping cool...who knew?

Nice job! I have the same bag in large/black and it too was missing the zipper pull. I just happened to be retiring the case for my kindle and it has almost the same type of dogleash tag type attachment and I just used that. It's a violet color but on a black bag it looks just fine to me.

Thanks! I had some red scrap leather, but it was way too red for this bag. I figured silver was a good second choice to match the hangtag.

I've never been able to get rid of the shiny areas. I think this is wear, not dirt.
The shiny appearance is from wear. Brushing helps to a degree. The darker the color the more difficult to blend in the shiny area. I did a rehab on a dark green nubuc and it ended up with a mottled appearance. While not objectionable, it was far from perfect.

Wow that purse is a gorgeous colour! Looks perfect to me. Thanks for the tip.

What if I brush it with one of those metal suede brushes? Will that rough it up enough to dull it down? Thanks.
I don't think so. I tried steel wool on mine which would have the same effect. It might have helped a little. It wasn't just the shininess, the pebbling had been worn smooth.

Grommet Repairs

Hi Everyone ~ I have a perfectly good Stewardess with 1 missing brass grommet on the strap. Has anyone had any luck with repairs at their local cobbler or would you recommend sending the strap back to Coach for the grommet (that is IF they'll do the repair). Thanks, Elizabeth
This is something that a good cobbler should be able to do easily.

In my experience, Coach puts a clear "varnish" on the brass. It's the varnish that chips, and the exposed areas tarnish. If you use a brass cleaner on it it will clean the tarnish off, but the same area will eventually tarnish again, the varnished areas will stay shiny.

I happened to have a metal cleaner around the house that I usually use for this, but I've also used toothpaste in the past. I know others have favorite brands of metal cleaners and I'm sure they'll have suggestions.

On the other hand, some of the older kisslock/watermelon type bags have a pretty thin brass colored coating that will come off and leave the metal silver underneath. That doesn't look like the same kind of hardware, however, so you should be fine just cleaning it.
What kind of metal cleaner is best? Metal cleaner is different that brass cleaner? I'm so glad it will work! Will you still see the imprint? Will you have to put a sealant on it? If you used brass cleaner, it would take the sealant off? Sorry I am asking all these questions! I have never done this before! Thank you!!

One more post then I'm done! (I save my questions until I have a few!)

Is it possible to get these lines out of the leather? The leather is not cut just a little deep. Can I smooth it out?

Also, but I started to condition my bags I bought the coach cleaner (coach purse coach cleaner/conditioner) but I was wondering if there is something better like leather CPR? I go through coach C&C pretty fast! Half a bottle for a couple of bags. On one I had to condition it a few times and still is not perfect! What do you guys think?

(A few pics coming up, it won't let me post all pics in one post!)

1st one is at an angle with the light shining right on it so it shows the worst of it!
