I swear it doesn’t move! Which is crazy bc then why go to the trouble of manufacturing it that way? Your ideas are way better than mine (not surprisingly 😂). Occam’s zipper pull replacement.

Has anyone else bought a “replacement zipper pull” and run into this? Maybe it’s actually a pendant??
Here are my thoughts. Why would they make a part of that ring smaller? Why not have a uniform thickness ring? ETA: I think I figured it out. My final sentence below.

Trying to logic it out: I'd try again to see if it pushes in. Hold the spot on the edge of a desk and push. See if it has some sort of spring moving it inward. I bought some hardware rings and they move like that. Or...another thought. Does the skinnier part recess into the larger part? Maybe it's missing the piece of metal to slide it. You could alway attach it with a brass ball & chain (like for a hangtag).

However: Another idea after looking at Whateve's picture of the poppy pull. It might be thinner there because it's meant to pop into the space on the zipper slider itself, not on a ring.

I looked through every Poppy item I've owned and can't find a zipper pull that looks like that. That one looks hard to hold onto. Most of those I have had have an open middle to make it easy to pull. A couple of them had something in the middle.

I think what you have isn't a zipper pull but there is no reason you can't use it for one.
You are too kind, to go looking!! And love, love the bags, especially your plaid!

I think you’re right! I went through the same thought process (incl studying @whateve ‘s pics!) and also ended up at the zipper itself (after forcing myself to put down the needlenose pliers and the charm). My interim thought was key fob — that the skinny part was meant to slide onto the key ring more easily. Which lead me to the zipper. And there’s the answer — see pics attached. The note card scrap demonstrates the gap where a pull snaps through.

But, as it happens, I have a matching donor bag. Now that I’ve realized how easy it is to snap in a new pull, I think I will maintain the integrity of the tab style and era by swapping in the one from the donor. Then add this to another charm via either key ring or clasp, as whateve originally suggested for the pull.

Mystery solved! Maybe this little jaunt down zipper logic lane will be useful to another TPFer who searches “zipper pull replace”. 😂😍 Thanks to both of you!!!

ETA: Ofc now I want to know, to whateve’s point, which bag or purpose this particular charm served!

Addendum...someone is selling these on ebay. You might ask the seller what bag they go to. https://www.ebay.com/itm/285652267327 https://www.ebay.com/itm/285652405000
I also found one with my ball/chain idea.

One of my bags has a plastic version of that charm. It's quite a bit bigger than the "zipper pull" one @squeakyrose has. Now that I look at that listing, I can see they also have zipper pulls that look like those on my bags. Just another version of the same thing.

First time posting here, long time lurker…y’all have unknowingly helped me save a many bags, and gave me the courage to dunk my first. So first of all, thank you! Idk if anyone has shared or seen but Coach posted this short to their official page regarding dunking. Just thought I’d share.

After all of your input, I dunked the bag after removing the hardware. First I cleaned it with a bit of dish soap and a horsehair brush, followed by a rinse with a cup of vinegar in the water. It was very satisfying seeing the dirty water!

I let it dry, conditioned after 3 hours, regularly changed the towels and even put it out in the sun the next day (followed by more conditioning). It is 80 % dry in the pictures. Unfortunately, still quite some variations in the color but the dry parts look way better. I won’t be able to work on it for the next week (vacation 🥳), when I’m back it should be fully dry. Besides more conditioning and buffing, any ideas how to either lighten the darker spots (saddle soap?) or darken the rest to make it look more uniform?

Unfortunately, I discovered the stitching on one of the strap holders (can’t think of the right word rn) is loose and the leather is starting to rip. Would leather glue/filler enough to stabilise the leather or should I try to reinforce the leather? TIA 🤗

PS: any guesses on the original color? Maybe mahogany?

You've made great progress! It's looking much better already. I still suspect that this is something that's been applied to he bag. It's just too uniform to be natural patina and especially in the 4th photo it looks to be an overlay on the original color. I think you can continue using saddle soap if you see that when you wipe the lather off the bag, it's taking something with it (as in you're not just wiping the yellow soap off as is). Otherwise I think it might not be doing much other than to condition.

As for the handle, I think you can first try to fasten the stich if you find the end of the thread and pull it back together and stop it from ripping furher. And perhaps you can find suitable threat and go over the top seams to stabilize it. This way you wouldn't have to get glue involved at first. Most leather glues have a flexible but very strong hold so it's very hard to undo them if you might want to later cut the whole seam and glue it and redo the seam fully.

The color is also somewhat puzzling. I don't have a bag in Mahogany but from the old catalogues I think Mahogany is a darker reddish brown. It could be a British Tan because there's some variation in a lot of the colors. I did also notice a shade named Terracotta which seems close, but I don't know if this model was ever made in this color.

Lookin' good. Re, color. Once the bag is reconditioned well, the color shows more true. From your stitching photo, the leather looks burgundy! The stitching rip is not too far gone. If you want it done professionally, a leather worker can do that. For me, I would use leather glue.

I've found when I use blackrock leather 'n rich as the final step in a bag, it has the effect of even-ing out the color in a pleasing way. So, yeah, there will be darker areas and variations, but it still looks good. If you want it uniform, then dying the bag is always an option. If you're keeping the bag for yourself to use, do what makes you happy. If it's to sell, people would like it with the color variations! I do. :)

I bought a Dooney in December and the Portland in January. I'd love to see the bags you got.

It's super hard to find an affordable pre creed bag. I got mine many years ago before prices got outrageous. The most expensive was $100. I regret selling my mini Safari. I didn't even get very much for it as they weren't selling for a lot back then.
Moderators if this needs to be moved somewhere else, plse do :)
I also bought the Sorrento Sac in December and the Portland Bucket after I saw yours. The Portland is small but MIGHTY - I love, love this little bag. She had to outgas for a couple of weeks but then the good leather smell set in and the leather is fabulous.

Been a very long time since posting here. Hi!

Wanted to share a new addition that's white - a color I swore I wouldn't buy because it's very difficult to "rehab" and I did not want a bag I wouldn't carry. I mean, who has the courage to carry a white bag and I never really thought they were very pretty. If anyone is afraid of carrying white, don't be. I have carried this beauty on numerous occasions and I am shocked at how durable this color is! I'm very cautious of my bags so there's that too. Anyway, I must say that white in person is stunning, pictures do not do it justice! I used a magic eraser (very, very carefully!) on the tongue and other areas that had dirt marks. I then washed the bag in Leather Therapy Wash and all the dirt came right out.

Don't be afraid of white! Nubuck, on the hand, is something to be afraid of though! Love the results of you red nubuck bag @katev!

**EDIT**
Why is that picture so huge??!

@Hoku44 you inspired me to get over my fear and finally try a white rehab!! I have a fondness for the 65th Anniversary Ergo totes. Purchased this summer beauty last night (graciously authenticated by @whateve , thank you again!). The bright lining may make cleaning a little trickier, but I can’t wait to receive and get started.

The lining is easy to clean and the colors don't run.

Hi,IMG_6344.webp
I just won this purse in an auction but I haven't paid for it yet. They described it as follows:

Condition: Fair/TLC - Item shows heavy signs of wear/handling throughout (preowned *vintage* item; Includes distressing/top-layer damage to exterior leather throughout, bent/misshaped strap, wrinkles/creases to body leather, some staining throughout on interior lining and some exterior marks/discolorations, dust/lint/light debris accumulation, etc.), will need a thorough clean/cosmetic TLC throughout, and will need repair in areas.

Do you think that it can be repaired? It looks like it might have a tear but I can't tell. Any other thoughts on rehabbing this purse. Price with shipping and taxes $54.41.

Thank you.
