I keep thinking about this monstrosity. If I could get some layer(s) of paint off it, I could dye it black...
I think it would take an inordinate amount of time to get an iffy result. I'm also wondering what kind of paint was used, as it looks quite thick at some places. I know you are good at miracles, but this bag might just take heavenly intervention

The paint runs/drips look like they could be rather thick. Some places appear to have multiple colors and thicknesses of paint. If the bag was dry before the "art work" was applied, wouldn't the leather have soaked up the paint to the point it would be imbedded in the leather, making the paint difficult to remove? Or possibly not taking dye well?
Still can't figure out why someone thought this was a good idea!!😯

Maybe they spilled paint on it and decided to make it look like they did it on purpose.

I just finished rehabbing this cutie patootie little bag. Love this little cutie! Much too small for me, but a fun rehab. Washed, conditioned, reinforced with leather glue some areas by the strap attachment. No creed. If anyone knows style/approx year made, thanks!! I'm pretty sure that I have a ginormous version of a similar bag in my closet from when I shopped the outlet store around 2010...

Two rehabs. The first one had missing/broken logo lettering so I took them all off and then I have replaced them with an enamel heart pin. The second was a small zippered pouch with a lot of split corners.

Hi all, longtime listener and first-time caller! I am so impressed with everyone's work here and would appreciate some advice about a putty Stewardess I'm working on. The bag is lovely and has incredible striations on the outside. See pic 3, a gratuitous glamour shot. However, the inside is problematic and shows significant darkening, likely because of the use of an oil-based conditioner--this is what the person who sold it to me posited. I buy that notion, but it's not a given. It's definitely not an isolated grease stain since all of the interior is darker than the rest of the bag.

What I've done so far -- two dunks, and in the second one focused on really rubbing the affected area, which feels slimier than the rest of the leather. That has resulted in some noticeable lightening, as seen in the progress from pic 1 to pic 2. But, it's not a huge difference.

Wondering what folks would recommend going forward. Trying a degreaser? Continuing to dunk? Are there any downsides to repeated dunks? I don't want to stress this bag out because I'm fixated on a section that is usually covered by the flap!

Ideas and advice are very much welcome.

Welcome! When you say the "inside," you don't mean the suede interior of the bag, do you? Do you mean the leather under the flap near the pocket? If you mean the leather near the pocket, did you try some saddle soap with a brush?

Yup yup, the leather, not the suede. I did try saddle soap between dunk 1 and dunk 2. I didn't take photos between those steps, so I am not sure how much it helped--if it helped, it didn't make a huge difference. Perhaps I will try that again before attempting another full dunk and see if it moves it along a bit! Maybe this is just going to take many cleanings/dunks. I'm locked in now! I am curious if a degreaser would be a better move, but that seems like a drastic step.

Welcome @GetThatBag! !

Speaking of degreaser, @ConnieinSeattle did the Furniture Clinic work for you at all or not so much?

I'm not loving it! (at all). Even after brushing it off when it turns to white powder, it leaves a weird residue on the bag, which comes back even after conditioning, and seems like it did some damage of its own to the texture. I used it on a British Tan Murphy, and I hated the result....had to redunk. The marks are still there, plus a bubbly-like scarred surface. I think it ate away some of the color on the lower right. On the bigger british tan briefcase, I've used it multiple times. The marks are still there, and...the weird reappearing residue. I guess I do need to dunk again on the briefcase.
