Here's what A.I. says. Check the color and "fuzziness" vs. "waxy" feel.

If you see a white, powdery residue on your vintage leather purse, it's most likely "spew" rather than mold; spew is a natural occurrence where oils from the leather migrate to the surface and solidify, appearing as a white film, while mold typically has a greenish or greyish color and a fuzzy texture.

Key points to differentiate:
  • Color: Spew is usually pure white, while mold can be green, grey, or black.

  • Texture: Spew feels slightly waxy and powdery, while mold can be fuzzy.

What to do:
  • Clean with leather cleaner:
If you suspect it's spew, gently clean the affected area with a leather cleaner and a soft cloth.

  • Check for mold growth:
If you see discoloration or fuzzy growth, it's likely mold and may require a specialized mold cleaning solution.

Disappearing under your heat test @Narnanz would mean spue, mold wouldn’t budge under heat… but I agree that it’s weird it’s only in that area… could there be both… ?
I have to look for my other hairdryer. It's hotter and easier to use.
When I find it I will try again.
There is no other white anywhere on the bag other than this known stain.
If its both...then this bag just doesn't like me at all.

Here's an update on the recent rehab of a black Legacy Medium Soft Slim Duffle (#1414, China, 2006) with my "hand-crafted tassel" replacement!

I belong to a group that had asked members to consider donating gifts to serve as pre-Christmas raffle prizes, so I decided to donate the duffle. It was won by a young woman, a teacher, who seemed thrilled with the bag!

The next time I saw her, she told me that she" loved the bag and carried it on Christmas Day" and she "made everyone look at the beautiful purse that she had won!"

I was really glad that she was happy with the bag and I offered to show her how to "double the strap over" so she could wear it as a shoulder bag if desired; but she is tall (I'm not!) and she said that she loves the long strap and often wears it crossbody.

I told her that "it's not just for Christmas, you know!" and advised her to wear it often; and she replied "Oh I know, but I wanted everyone to see it first!"

So I am very pleased that I rehabbed this lovely bag and found a good home for it; Happy New Year, Coachies!

Here are pics of spue on a camel willis that I rehabbed, the spue disappeared with the heat from the hair dryer and hasn't returned after rehabbing the bag.

Love this Christmas and beyond story and what a wonderful gift to donate! Imagine the many new chapters ahead (could be more decades!) for this bag with YOUR handcrafted tassel! 👏

Happy New Year, Coachies! So happy to have found this group of wonderful people in 2024 and looking forward to 2025.

We’re on NYD football (soccer) game 3 here at our house so I’ve slipped away for some quiet time with my current rehabs. This bag has a long story that I’ll save for its final post - but here are a couple WIP photos trying out a new-to-me product. Let you know how it goes!

Grease/dark-but-not-ink stain removal! This product, Furniture Clinic Leather Degreaser, has popped up in the thread a few times over the years. I bought it on Amazon to try as a last ditch on multiple large embedded stains that stubbornly resisted every other increasingly more aggressive step including, eg, zit cream. My two cents — this will always be in my toolkit. It’s a little hard to work with, and on dark leather you’d have to touch up with a recolorant. But it saved a saddle colored bag that was a lost cause short of dying it black. I actually ordered the Furniture Clinic Leather Cleaner today so that next time I can try following the degreaser instructions exactly to the letter. I’ll post pics with the finished bag but if anyone’s interested in trying this, lmk, happy to share more details!

Smell remover! @ConnieinSeattle this one’s for you! My rehab closet and my family thank you so much for the used coffee grounds recommendation!! 😁🙌

The lavender in the pic is extra fine food grade for lemon lavender cakes, from the pantry — last bit was losing its potency so decided to use it up. Cheaper would be just fine. But use in small pinches unless you want your bags to smell like the south of France!
