I have a Madison satchel I bought years ago. The color was a bit of a mystery but based on the inside pocket I thought it might be in the burgundy family. The outside was just really faded and I never used it. Decided to dye it. Used Deglazer, then Fiebings Leather Dye in Burgundy. Got some Resolene but was scared it would be too shiny/plasticky so used Leather Finish by Leather Therapy instead…gives it a mellow glow. This was my first dye job and definitely isn’t perfect. But I kinda love it and don’t plan to sell it so figured I’d give it a shot. Glad I did it! Now I’m planning to get a burgundy strap for her.

Here are before pics:

Another "bin store" find during my latest outing where I found the Coach basic bag. This one is a vintage "Mark Cross" bag, made in Italy. Apparently, it's a very nice luxury brand and worthy of rehab. I paid about $3 for it! Anyone know anything about this brand?

I’ve heard of this brand but don’t have any experience with it. But…I’m loving that strap!

Fantastic find, Connie. Great eye! I don’t own any but Mark Cross is a quiet luxury brand. You see them on F****D**s. American, older even than Coach. Started pre-1900s I think, maybe equestrian? I know some new ones sell for well into 4 digits. Maybe most importantly I remember reading they were acquired by a conglomerate (I forget who) a few years back after like 150 years privately owned. So you can assume vintage quality will be special. Maybe elsewhere on TPF it can be authenticated? The binding trim and that strap — looks huggable.

Those bins stores are wild, people tossing things around right and left. This was sitting all alone on top of a pile where others had discarded it! I wasn't sure from a distance if this were leather or vinyl, but the hardware looked to be quality. And the second I touched it, I knew it was something good. And when I upzipped it, beautiful leather interior. It's an amazing quality of leather, actually. So far, I've only done some leather CPR for it, and it's glowing. One reason it might have been "bin stored"...the strap was unattached on one side. I took it home and reattached the strap. There's a tiny screw holding it in the hardware. I undid the screw. I shoved the strap back in the holder with some leather glue for extra oomph and rescrewed it. It seems sturdy.

Looking for advice… this bag is outside my limited wheelhouse. Whateve and BeenBurned both graciously authenticated. It’s not vintage, and made in China. But leather is lovely and smooshy, no stains on exterior or lining (for now anyway), and no repairs needed. Very good condition. But, desperately needs deodorizing, I suspect a wee dingy, lining needs a good clean, and bottom “corners” are dirty. Normally straight into the bath and I think she’d be gorgeous… light taupey pearlized grey with light coral/salmon lining… I think my MIL would really like her. But, can I dunk perforated leather?? Can I dunk pearlized leather? Can I use CPR after that? Recs welcome!

If anyone can help me decode the year, bonus. I’m not used to reading the newer ones. I think this was made in 2011…?

Thanks!

I think it would be okay to dunk the bag and then apply CPR. My rule of thumb is that "if the bag doesn't look clean and I wouldn't feel comfortable carrying it - then it's time to give it a bath!"

2011. Personally I wouldn't dunk. It doesn't help that much with odors. There are a lot of suggestions for odors in this thread. If the lining pulls out, it should be easy to clean. You can even use soapy water. Just be careful to keep it off the leather and rinse thoroughly. If the leather gets splashed dry it off immediately. It won't hurt it as long as it doesn't soak in. I suspect that cleaning won't make those corners any better. With newer bags, the color usually just sits on top so it has probably worn off. You may have to add a bit of color. CPR is fine.

Like katev I’ve quickly become pro dunk, for both cleaning and reshaping. But the perf and metallic/pearl has me a little cautious. Lining pulls out so can def wash that. The ‘dirt’ on the corners looks a little colored/rubbed on rather than worn.

But the leather does require some kind of a clean. Rather than dunk the metallic/pearl, what else do we think? Lexol?

Lexol should be fine. CPR also cleans.
