Hi all,
I have this wallet that is a bit dirty and I am wondering what suggestions you might have to bring it to full glory? Gentle sponge bath and CPR? That is what I am thinking, but interested in other approaches to wallet rehab.

Personally I don't like dunking wallets as they end up warped. The thinner leather doesn't plump up like it does on a purse rehab. It really doesn't look bad to me. I think conditioning might be all it needs, but be careful. I had a wallet that looked pristine except the leather looked dry. When I conditioned it, it got a swirly pattern from the way I spread the conditioner on, and I could never get it to go away.

Thank you so much. Good advice!!!

In my experience the staining on the leather from the zipper doesn't clean off. You might try sanding it. Make sure there aren't any holes in the handles where water can get inside before you dunk. If water gets inside, the handles will soften.

Just picked up this lovely lady today and am hoping for some tips on how to remove the water stains and lighten up the handles. she's very dry after having been stored for an era (look at the patina on the leather from the zipper!),l. I'm a little worried she's not going to survive a bath. I also have to figure out a way to fold & glue that little leather tab on the handle back under and create a better zipper pull....

I've successfully dunked and reconditioned a Willis and a station bag with CPR, Blackrocks, & renapur, but those bags were from the 90s and have a very different feel to the leather.

thoughts? suggestions?

I had a white bag with verdigris from the zipper inside. I got it out with a the tip of a file, then literally filed it down a bit, very gently. It all came out. I did that before I gave it a bath. This is what I used. Looks rough, but it worked.

Sorry for my stained art table. It always looks gross when I take pics on it.

Yes, good point. I also am fine with some wear and signs of a life! Lord knows I have some!
I know, right??? I would like to think that the classic understated style of my Coach bags, along with being welled conditioned, with a bit of wear and maybe some organic, unique markings reflect me!
And like many people, I have bags with a lot of wear that have been through God knows what. On certain bags, it adds to them, imo, and I am fine with retaining that. It’s interesting. I have bags that I want to see if I can completely restore and then I have bags that I am fine with their markings from the slings and arrows of outrageous fortune.

I don't mind patina on the browns but the bright colors I like pristine.

Well, this one is a return. Lovely bag in great condition, very rare. BUT Someone took it upon themselves to inexpertly modify the d*#$ strap. WTH??? A beautiful, well made, and durable strap rendered useless. This detail wasn't pictured, if the seller even knew the difference. And I've got to pay return shipping. Poo.

I could see where the seller might not have known. Unfortunately this has happened to a lot of bags when long straps weren't in style. How much of the strap was cut off? Why do you have to pay return shipping if it isn't as described?

Wow - did they just cut it off. What should the ends look like?
It should look like this one, a nicely rounded, burnished end with thread all the way around and well set rivets.

More than that, they made a crossbody into a shoulder bag. I don't like shoulder bags and only tolerate them when I love the bag a ridiculous amount, like my Ergo. I can't resell this one either because that kind of modification lowers the value considerably

Anyway, sorry, y'all. I just needed to vent. Lol. I didn't pay top dollar for it, but neither was it inexpensive.

There was no description, just "vintage Coach bag," basically. On the seller's info it says they accept returns, at the buyer's expense. I think I'll try to raise the issue of this being a modified bag and not clearly noted or pictured as such. I doubt the seller even knew, though. Like you said, it's a pretty common modification. So I kinda feel bad for them too if they didn't know.

Marks & patina on NYC bags don’t bother me, I actually like them. Marks & patina on 90’s & later though… drives me crazy. I don’t know why lol :shrugs:
