Thank you Connie. What do people typically use to dye a bag a different color? Say if I wanted to dye a British Tan bag black or dark brown? Margaret.
I have used Feibings. I had an ink stained Anderson bag in British Tan and dyed it Navy blue. Turned out great!

There are many variables that affect the success of a dye job. What works on one bag may not work on another.

Aha, thank you. Fiebings is not for sale/not available in California, so is difficult to get hold of. What did you do to the inside of the bag - did you dye it or leave it as BT?
I left it as is. There were ink stains inside as well but I don’t like a dark interior in my bags so I left it. I can always use a liner if the stains start to bother me

My bargain mystery bag went from this-

It’s a Janice with nickel hardware. Very sleek and elegant bag, and will be a nice gift for my daughter.
That bag has a special place in my heart. It was the first fancy bag I had. My Janice's Legacy was a purchase from a Coach outlet too, and I toted it everywhere. How nice that you restored this one to its full glory!

I would also like some advice on how to dunk a Sonoma. Any special precautions for the lining and creed patch?
I have dunked light colored Sonoma Natural Grain bags without a problem. The longest dunk was about 10-15 mins in warm water with Dawn detergent and I had no bleeding of the dark striped lining or creed patch problems. Pull the linings out as much as possible from the bag before dunking. When the linings take on water, they do act as a "life jacket". I used water bottles to keep the bag submerged.
Other rehabbers here have so much more experience than I, so I'm sure someone has advice to share.
Good luck!

I haven't had good luck with Fiebings. Maybe it is because in California the Fiebings they are allowed to sell is different. You could try Angelus. I'm in the middle of a project with Angelus but haven't gotten very far.

I don't do anything different except pull the lining out after the dunk. Squeeze out the excess water and let it dry outside the bag. Once it is mostly dry, put it back inside the bag and stuff so it can be shaped.

Question: I am working on brass polishing, and a little green got onto the polishing square as I was working on the zipper. I think it’s from the metal, but I also saw this area and cleaned it with some cotton swabs, no solvent. There’s no gunk on there if I try scratching it. I think it’s where the nap of the suede has been abraded away by the zipper. Does that sound right?

I always see discolorations, even on fabric purses, where the zipper touches. I've never been able to clean it off.

It’s summertime and everyone is traveling. A few months ago I was on the hunt for a large tote to use as a carry on, I also wanted a rehab challenge and given my current obsession with all Italian Coaches, an Italian bag. I found all three in this bag at a bargain price. It’s condition precludes it from ever being valuable but it is still very functional.

It’s a 1998 Lexington Shopper. The handles were worn through, the straps had started to separate and had been reinforced with extra leather pieces and stitched across the top, and the whole sorry thing was PARCHED.

Now being as I was planning on throwing this thing around the back of my car, stuffing it under airplane seats and setting it down anywhere and everywhere, no delicate miss would do for me. I wanted a sturdy girl who could accompany me on adventures and not blink. This bag already had history, just like me. She just needed a mani/pedi and a hot bath and she would be ready to go again.

I used leather filler on the handles, reglued the strap reinforcement and gave her some much needed moisturizer.

Ready for her next 25 years.

Ready for her next 25 years.
Love how she is showing off her wrinkles of age, character and wisdom. Enjoy taking her along on your adventures!
