Hi again,

So I dunked the bag and it is still drying (taking a long time!), but I am now worried about mold. There are some dark spots on one side of the bag and it has a sort of perfumy/thrift store/old make up smell that I don't associate with mold, but maybe I am wrong? Thoughts? Should I redunk with vinegar? Any other thoughts? Thanks very much.

Hi, I was actually looking at that same bag on the GW site! Glad it found a rehabber. Now about the musty old perfumey smell - I would re-dunk and put some vinegar in the soaking water. Vinegar is really the best for getting rid of any smells. Perfume smell is the hardest to get rid of, but the vinegar will help. I don't think the darker areas on the outside of the bag will go away entirely - when re-dunking/washing the bag you can gently clean the area with an old wash cloth or rag. A washcloth makes it easier to get every part of the inside pockets clean too. When you condition the bag, the darker wear areas will likely blend in a bit better. Make sure when the bag is initially drying that you stuff it loosely with towels to reshape. the towels can be taken out after an hour or two and then rotate the bag to let it dry evenly. The bottom will flatten out if you stuff the bag and then rotate the position when it is drying.

I don't think the bag has mold from what i can see, but the vinegar will take care of that too - vinegar kills mold. Sometimes bags just smell musty, but it can't hurt to use the vinegar just in case. Also look over the brass parts of the bag - the zippers, and check to see if there is any green verdigris so that you can clean thatup if needed.

Good luck with the rehab, the legacy zip is a great bag, you will love it when it's done.

Thank you so much! I will try that process and report back!

Thank you so much! I'm based in the UK and haven't managed to find Blackrock that isn't extortionately priced, is there anything else i could look for that is similar?
I’m in the UK. I’d use Renapur.

eta I also prefer BR but only because I have both to compare.

I like Blackrocks on medium to dark bags for evening out colour or enhancing patina. I use Renapur on all light coloured bags (heated on the sponge by a hairdryer). I love the scent of Renapur! I sometimes do Blackrocks first and finish with Renapur. :flowers:

It’s funny but I actually prefer the smell of br!!! Lol x

Thanks. Can i ask where you got the BR from? I now have Renapur but I see most people prefer BR.
When I ran out of BR, I decided to get Renapur and try it based on some great results I saw here. I went in to bargain hunting mode and got essentially 2 containers for the price of one. So I'm committed  I will hold off on picking up more BR until I am into my 2nd container of Renapur. I am half way through my 1st. I am satisfied with it.

Hey guys!

I just wanted to share something with everyone. I’ve just discovered electroplating for these older bags that have brass plated hardware on which the brass has worn off. I got mine on Amazon but they have a website too. It’s Caswells plug n plate. Here’s some pics of the first project I did on hardware from a members bag.
This is the set up which is a non arsenic process

This is the progression, a before, a polished down to the nickel mid process, and finished

I’ve also started experimenting with metal still attached to the leather, like this kisslock frame on a Watermelon. I only just started to do the left corner there, but you can see the gold starting to show and it didn’t burn the leather.

It’s kind of like painting in you have to keep moving the liquid so there is an “art” to it. The kit is only around $70 and mine is lasting far past expiration date.
Just something fun for you guys to try and more tools in your box!! :)
