My mahogany Winnie is finally done! Post-rehab there were a lot of scratches along the dowel as well as the front flap. No amount of CPR, Renapur, Blackrocks & horse hair brushing was getting rid of it. I thought about using my left over courier dye to dye the Winnie black but ultimately decided against it as I just couldn’t bring myself to do it haha. Then I drove 30 mins to a shoe/handbag repair shop that carries Saphir products & the cobbler was SO friendly. He helped me choose the correct Juvacuir colour for my Winnie so I could colour refresh the bag. Funny enough, the shade that matched is #37 medium brown which is the exact shade @Lake Effect said matched her BT bags (go figure!). I mainly focused on the problematic areas, left it for a while & then buffed with a horse hair brush. Tackiness was gone after a day! Now enough rambling, here are the pics:

Special thank you to the TPF’er who made owning this Winnie possible (really wish I could tag you without getting in trouble lol) & @Lake Effect, you’re the reason Juvacuir ended up on my radar!:hugs:

Wow!!! That’s an amazing transformation. Great job! It’s stunning

Thank you! The Winnie is the perfect size for all my stuff. I wish the style was as dime a dozen as a city or station bag cause I’d get one in every colour! I absolutely love it!:girlsigh:

Same here! Such a shame they’re so hard to find at a decent price. I feel lucky to have 2 but I would love them in every color as well!

I found out about Juvacuir on this thread, posted by someone who is not active here. It made my somewhat universally faded black Plaza looks good amazing. Oh #37, are you a chameleon??
Enjoy your Winnie

Hello!

Can I confirm that these are mold damage on the 9755 (United States, 1998)? The bag did not come with these markings, only appeared after dunking and drying.

Steps:
1. dunked it in water with a gentle soap (I don't have Dawn here where I am in Asia).
2. used apple conditioner while wet, a few times.
3. let dry for 2-3 days, occasionally using hairdryer on cool.
4. after seeing the spots on the front (thought they were water spots) tried to dunk front flap in water again. and dried it again. spots reappeared. repeat with apple conditioner
5. applied collonil waterstop cream in circular motion.
6. sprayed collonil 1909 spray to finish.

I saw an earlier post that had a similar situation to mine.

It might be mold damage and in that case their isn't much you can do. Soaking with vinegar may help to prevent more mold. Using a conditioner like Black Rocks that will darken it a little may also help to obscure the spots.

It may look better with time as it continues to dry. I once rehabbed a red bag that I didn't dunk but it got spotty when I started to clean and condition it and it wasn't mold; it just got darker in some areas. I put it away in disgust and when I came upon it later it looked great. Good luck!

Excuse the stickers. Was going to polish the brass.

More questions:
- when is dunking advised? A little sad that I dunked and looks much worse off. E.g. not for light coloured bags
- lots of tan dye came out when dunking. Is that normal?
- should condition before dunking in my case to prevent spots?

p.s. first time posting and first time deep cleaning a vintage coach, so sorry if I have omitted any information or appear uninformed!

The pattern looks like it could be mold. Are the spots completely flat or are any of them indented? When mold gets bad, the spots get indented like the leather tightens in those spots. You might want to try a conditioner that darkens, like Blackrock to make the spots less noticeable. Sometimes you get discoloration with a dunk that eventually fades. This could take weeks.

They're not indented.

Thanks for your advice! Hope they do fade.

Just won this duffle sac 9085 kindly authenticated by hyacinth! My first duffle.

@katev would you (or anyone else?) advise applying lt to this level of dryness or would you just go straight to cpr? I'm low on cpr and can't buy anymore .View attachment 5118892View attachment 5118893View attachment 5118894

Nice bag!

Sorry but I don't understand the question, applying what? I don't pre-moisturize before dunking if that's what you are asking. But I often apply Leather Therapy Restorer & Conditioner while the bag is damp shortly after dunking. Especially to very dry bags and with special attention to thinner areas like straps and piping.

I think applying any good quality moisturizer will be helpful. I usually use Leather CPR as the second product after LT and then finally Black Rocks. I know that you have different products available in your part of the world so use whatever makes sense for you.

Good luck!

Sorry, my typing wasn't clear - yes I meant Leather Therapy. I was wondering whether this is a bag you would see as dry enough to add LT but now I see you apply it often rather than only when the bag is super dry. OK great, I'll use LT first after the dunk. Thank you!!! X

The same exact thing just happen to me (pretty sure you saw). I don’t think mine (or yours) were mold but most likely water stains. Mine were pretty significant and have been a pain to try to remove. If you scroll back a few posts you can see everyone’s advice to try to improve the stains.
Here’s a link to one of the suggestions that I also followed.

My bag has definitely improved with each time, but unfortunately the marks have not fully gone away. But your marks definitely weren’t as bad as mine so hopefully yours will disappear. Once you dunk your bag, I also suggest scrubbing it with a brush I used to use a toothbrush but I find that they can be a bit rough and can lift the paint off the bag if you get carried away and scrub too hard, plus they’re very small and it would be hard to pin point where the spots are when it’s wet. I used a large horse hair brush this time and was able to more evenly scrub the bag.
Good luck with your bag!

Paint?!?! :confused1::hrmm::confused1:
I believe she just means the natural finish, not paint. Several years ago we had a member who scrubbed too hard on her first rehab and ruined the surface of her bag. I usually scrub on the inside but I'm pretty gentle with the exterior.

Yep, I turn them inside out and fully scrub the interior with fairy to get it as clean as possible. I have to for peace of mind!
