I dunked my NYC marketing tote on Sunday and noticed this morning that all of the hardware rusted. One of the zippers doesn't work now. Any suggestions on what to use to clean the rust? This was very unexpected, I've never had hardware rust before. Thank you.

Also, just a note to other adventurous rehabbers: a while ago I bought what I thought was a black Willis with nickel hardware that turned out to be a navy blue Willis with a moldy back pocket and in my irritation at receiving a moldy not-black Willis, I completely filled the bag with vinegar and let it sit over night. Now the zipper doesn't work and is coated in a white salty-chalky looking substance. I dunked the bag the next day, so it was thoroughly rinsed. Maybe it's not a good idea to soak a bag in vinegar over night. Don't do that.

Not sure if it will work , I would try polish the hardware with toothpaste and cloth. Just need to completely wash and scrub off toothpaste afterwards, otherwise it will leave behind white residue .

Hi all,

Would appreciate some advice on cleaning up a pre-loved bag I got. It's meant to be cream in colour but it's closer to beige and seems to have built up some dirt over the years. The discolouration is pretty even- to the extent where I questioned that this was its original colour (but searching online it seems the original colour was a shade lighter).

I've tried cleaning it with warm water and soap, but nothing came off. It just looks dull and darker than it should be.

Reading on here, I see zit cream is recommended for cleaning white bags but I wonder if that would work on cream coloured leather the same way? Or is there a risk it would be too harsh and remove the cream dye and uncover the leather colour underneath it?
Is toothpaste a safe option? I saw this recommended on another page that came up via a Google search but haven't seen this anywhere here.

Any suggestions much appreciated. Thanks!

First I would try scrubbing with vinegar on a toothbrush. Mask off the surrounding areas so you don't transfer rust to the other parts. Try to reach all surfaces of the teeth on both sides.

I recently rehabbed a Dakota Harvest tote and the zippers had some kind of black oxidation on them. The inside pocket zipper wouldn't move. I cleaned both zippers with vinegar, then rubbed vigorously with a microfiber cloth (stains came off onto the cloth), then used a Cape Cod metal polishing cloth (also picked up some stains). Zippers fully functional after this treatment.

Good luck!

Which bag? Pictures?

Oops, I should have known to include more info, sorry!

It's an MBMJ bag (posting here because that forum doesn't have a rehab section) and it's in amazing condition all around, apart from the colour being slightly off.
It is also my personal HG bag because I missed out on getting it when it was launched and I regretted not buying it, so I was thrilled to find one in great condition on the pre-loved market.

I took some photos for you just now (attached) but that all-over discoloration isn't as obvious in the pictures. I had seen it in-store when it launched and remember it being brighter in colour, and Google images I looked up today also show it being a shade lighter than the real deal I'm holding (and more like the colour I remember it being).
I understand age and use will turn light coloured bags a little darker but I'm hoping to refresh it a bit if possible. If not, it's still great and I plan to wear it endlessly!

Thanks in advance for any tips you can offer (even if the tip is to leave it alone, ha ha).

I think it is too dark to use zit cream. Different brands will react differently to rehabbing than the Coach we know. Sometimes you can get disastrous consequences, like just getting it wet will cause glue to discolor the leather. If I were going to do anything, I would use vinegar or a leather cleaner, but I would test on a small part first.

Toothpaste is not safe for leather, it may dull the leather surface. It is effective on hardware because the micro polishing agents in it's ingredients (as long as the hardware is not very shinny.).
