I'd appreciate some advice on this NYC classic from the more experienced R&Rs. She's got more than a few miles on her, which I kind of like, and I'm hoping after her spa day(s) she ends up looking like something Indiana Jones would carry... If Indiana Jones carried Coach!

I'm going to take her to a cobbler to have the edging restitched, but should I do that before or after she's been bathed and conditioned?

Not much experience here, but I would definitely fix the stitches and condition the bag several times before dunking.

My usual approach is to wash, dry/reshape and condition first, then repair any tears or holes. My feeling is that the dunking process might reveal additional issues and it's better to address them after the bag has been washed, dried and reshaped. The only issue I would definitely address before dunking is verdigris, if any.

Excellent point about “additional issues”. I feel like the first series of dunks mainly serves to reveal the REAL scope of the project!

I've not inspected the panel too closely yet. It appears to have just come loose at the ends but I will definitely do a careful inspect and clean of the panel/underside as needed. I was so thrilled to nab a Stewardess bag, especially as it was caught in the wild! A Stewardess has been on my vintage wishlist. Poor thing. It was sort of balled up, hanging on a rod but caught up in a mess of other bags. You couldn't even see the bag but my little eye spied that telltale Coach buckle strap peeking out of the mess and I started digging. It was $16.99 - more than I normally would spend on a thrift store item but worth it for an NYC Coach!:happydance:

Do you have a particular brand of leather cement you recommend, @Busykitty?
I use feiblings

Wow!! Look at this with the lacquer removed!!! After I buff it should I re-lacquer?

If the brass is solid (a magnet won’t adhere) I would buff with 000 steel wool until the surface is uniform in sheen. Then follow up with brasso or my personal favourite, Cape Cod metal polishing cloth. I dab an ear bud onto the cloth and rub over the surface.

A while ago I got a dark brown NYC basic bag from Poshmark. Thought to post the rehab experience to show NYC bag is totally dunk able. The leather of bag was in good condition other than out of shape, but both shoulder strap and wrist strap were very dry and stiff, they were thin leather and dried out easier compare with the thick leather of bag. First I wiped down the whole bag with cleaning towel, the conditioned them twice with leather cpr in 2 days. Then dunk the whole bag with the hair shampoo I figured might be good for cleaning leather (I did try the shampoo on a testing bag prior with good result). The biggest concern was to conserve the precious creed, I had a Legacy Patricia's creed almost disappeared on me after dunking and drying, then a court bag's creed faded quite a bit. The soft thick glove tanned leather soaked up water like sponge, take a long time to dry, and I was foolish to not to pay attention. So with this basic bag, I dried the interior pocket with creed stamped on really good with towel after dunking, and pulled it outside while drying, the result was very good. She Is almost done and beautiful already.
It looks great. Normally creeds don't disappear. I've only had problems with very faint creeds and creeds on lined bags.
