It depends, sometimes the leather can crack because it's been neglected for so long.
My inexperience tells me to just stick with looking at bags that have already been rehabbed or not so old. I say "old" but usually I am careful about using that word because I myself am from the 70s, so hey I'm not old, I guess I'm vintage! But I digress, I am finding myself starting to want an NYC bag, but without the risk of ruining it myself, so, ya.

Do you lovely folks take extra consideration about dunking a NYC or pre-creed bag or do you think they're still durable enough to handle it?
I've dunked many NYC bags. I don't usually think about it. Precreed I'm more careful with. Usually I'll dunk those unless they are lined. When you have a bag in hand, you can tell more about the condition of the leather. I know someone here dunked a NYC bag that was really dry and it fell apart.

I have dunked two NYC bags. One turned out beautiful, the other cracked and put me off dunking anything for a month or two. It really just depends on the bag.
Yikes. Yes I would be so nervous with a bag of that age. I am looking at a few different listings, trying to keep the price way down of course, but really just on the fence about going with a really cheap one. Or a high-end-of-my-budget price if there's a possibility it needs dunked going by some of the experiences here.

Artax the last two bags I dunked are N.Y. City bags both saddlery bags the red one is posted a few pages back and the black one from last night promises to come out just as nice maybe even better.it depends on the condition of the bag, I have seen some bags posted where the dryness screams out of the picture, as unexpirienced as I am I would not attempt something like that but something that looks in decent shape why not.
The chance that you find bags like that in pristine condition with a low pricetag are getting slim.

That sounds encouraging! I will go back and look through the past few pages to see your photos. I agree with what you're saying about slim chances. I think two things: 1) my ideal prices are probably way too low for the better condition bags in the market right now especially for the better condition NYCs but 2) even at my ideal prices, if a bag fell apart, it would feel like a big waste of money. I need to find a good but not great one for cheap so that if it falls apart, its not too big a loss.

I agree with @whateve that you could certainly dunk the Basic Bag, but don't count on the spots coming out. That bag is not likely to fall apart, but even after rehab, it will still have a distressed character. The condition of the hardware worries me a little. It looks pretty corroded, especially the ring on the zipper pull. At $45, I'd pass on it.

Thank you for that insight. I think I have about decided to pass. When I saw that one, I was thinking about offering about $25 to $30. I posted it for authentication and then thought, well I should have cross checked the other sites, and so I did and boom there were a handful more that looked in better shape for the same price or slightly less. In order to save you ladies (or gents) the hassle of authenticating, I will just compare the hardware and creed photos of any other same-style bag I might consider and only post for one for you all to look at when I get serious about one. I am so happy to have this forum for a resource. I have learned so much and am really enjoying the hunt!

For example, is this something that could withstand a dunk, stuff, n' condish and would you think those dark spots would be removed?

I think that Basic Bag would look well after dunking and conditioning and although the spots might not come out, after conditioning with Blackrocks, I think that they would be much less noticeable. But if you are new to rehabbing you might want to start with a cheaper, darker colored-bag; just my opinion.

I have dunked several NYC glove-tanned bags and it has never been a problem. I only have one pre-creed Bonnie Cashin coach bag and it has the striped lining. I gave it a bath and it came out great. I am sure that some Coachies are sick of me posting this same old thread but (sadly) it's my only example, see the link below.

But I got that bag very cheaply, I might be less inclined to be adventurous with a rare and expensive bag.

I had not seen that thread, and that bag is SO stinkin cute! It came out great. I need to check my thrift shops but I just cannot imagine finding anything like that where I live.

Thanks, I keep hoping to find another Cashin bag but I should probably just be thankful for getting lucky once and not get greedy! Anyway, it was a lined, pre-creed Cashin Coach bag and I dunked it and it came out good!
