Hello! I was hoping you guys could help me with color. I want a light tan-ish bag for my next one. Does anybody have a putty bag and a camel tan bag? Could you please take a picture side by side? Thanks. Also is Taupe an official color?
Camel is very yellow. In the 90s, it was done with nickel hardware.

So here’s a poor compact pouch that someone decided to apply brass studs to. I’ve removed to studs, but does anyone know some kind of crazy thing that could be done to save it? It literally has holes in it. I don’t want to waste my time, but I also have yet to do my first dunking. Idk? Thoughts?AD96F9C6-2C2A-499F-B48B-5D69B35F19BE.jpeg

Thank you SO much for the late night response!

Lol sigh. I'm like, the worst apprentice ever right now.
I didn't see your post, and dunked again last night. Ugh.

There were some dark marks on the bag, which is why I dunked.
(I figured my window of time for conditioning was closing, and I didn't know if conditioner would set the stains, or what.)

The marks are still there now, even after the bag has been dunked again. (Pictures are below. These were taken just now.)

No idea what these are, i.e. actual marks, or water stains, or color loss, or what. (This is my first time doing a red bag.)
I didn't see any of these marks on the bag, when I first received it, so quite annoyed with myself.

You mentioned it's too early to tell, so that's what I'm telling myself!

Will start conditioning today using CPR or Leather Therapy.

I saw that @valv54 mentioned using Obenuf's Oil in the past to even out color. Wondering if that might help with this bag.

Ordered some on Amazon now, and also ordered Obenauf's LP.
Just on the remote chance that people here think these products may help.
I'm assuming they won't help, and I shouldn't use them?

I'm assuming that if I use Leather CPR, I shouldn't use Obenauf's Oil later.
If I use Leather Therapy now, guessing that I shouldn't use Obenauf's Oil later (or maybe that'd be fine, because they're similar).

I should probably stop messing around with conditioners.
Oh my gosh, this rehab. :whut::rolleyes:

Okay let’s put aside the fact that I generally promote following your bliss in experimenting with any and all conditioners and the general learn by doing process. Because hey, it’s your bag, do whatever, right?
And the fact that I need a spreadsheet and or flow chart to follow what you have done to this bag before, during and after dunking this bag!
Pump the brakes on the Obenauf’s Oil, as mentioned it will darken a red bag, O’s LP is more a waterproof type product. Pump the brakes hard on that. If and only if you were going to apply O’s Oil, i woulld let the bag completely dry. I generally don’t put it on sooner than 7 - 10 days after dunking. After a few apps of either Leather Therapy or CPR.

Sometimes dark spots show up on a red bag after dunking. I have no idea why. Eventually they will fade. I would not use obenauf's oil. Any oil is likely to darken, and darken unevenly. CPR is the safest conditioner you can use to preserve the color.

Thanks so much for the info!

I applied Leather Therapy today (again).

About oil and uneven darkening, ohhhhh. I see.
I realized that oil can cause darkening, but I assumed any darkening would be even.

May I please ask: have you used Leather Therapy on a red bag, and experienced uneven darkening?
(Or, have you used another oil, on another light color leather, and experienced uneven darkening?)

And if so, did the dark marks fade (or were they permanent)?

Aw man. This rehab has become such a comedy of errors.

THANK YOU! The brakes have been pumped hard.

About waiting a while before doing Obenauf's Oil, interesting!
In what situation would you apply Obenauf's Oil? If the bag is still dry, 7 - 10 days after dunking?

I've only used leather Therapy a few times and I didn't like the results. When I need an oily conditioner, I use Leather Honey, but that is only on rare occasions. I would probably never use it on a red bag because of darkening.

I use O’sOil if I felt a bag was either super dry or worn (to start with) for extra conditioning. It doesn’t seem to affect the color for dark blue or black. I have held off using it on a few BT bags, because I know it will change the hue a bit. And I didn’t want to, yet. But my BT Sling Bag is getting dry. I am going to dunk it again at some point, condition it and use OO on it. It needs it.
If a bag does not seem super dry to start with, I hold off on O’s O. I can always resume it down the line and apply it.
I bought a beater City bag in BT. It was scratched, stained and dry looking/feeling. Perfect candidate for O’s Oil. I wanted a rich patina. Was not disappointed. My early rehabs included a real mix a mildly beat up and or dry bags, $30 or less, to get a feel for what happens to the leather.
My first true rehab was a pair of bags. One was a Putty Convertible Clutch that was dried out and water stained. O’s O did deepen it a shade, IMO. It enhanced the leather wonderfully. I bought a mocha Open Marketing Tote that was just really dry. It made the leather more supple.
I did buy a Plaza in very good condition. It’s black. However, the black just seemed a tad faded overall. I applied O’s Oil in hopes it would enhance the color and restore it. Nope, didn’t happen. But made the leather smell more like leather and made it very soft!
Lol it was great for a pair of black leather boots too.
ETA, and fyi, cats and dogs really like the taste of O’s Leather Protector. Apply it and store it out of sight
Also, it you missed me posting this about 8 times before , be prepared for O’s Oil to be runny. Very runny. So apply it sparingly at first to get a feel for it. And spread out lots of newspaper.

Lol lol I bought the 32 oz of Leather Therapy R/C when I started rehabbing. I wasn’t afraid to commit. I finally used it up last summer and decided to try CPR. I like slathering LT on the really dry stuff. I like being able to control how much and where I apply CPR.

I'd been wondering what to do if a bag is still dry after many coats of CPR.

I'm assuming Obenauf's Oil is great for colors of leather that look good with patina (but not so great for bags where an even color is ideal, such as red)?

May I ask if you've ever used Leather Therapy on a red bag? (I apologize in advance if we've already talked about this!)

Also, any chance you've ever used O's Oil on a red bag?

About the dark marks that sometimes show up on a red bag after dunking, happen to recall how long they take to fade? (Like, days, or months?)
Just wondering in case you have a sense of how long.
So if these marks remain, around when to officially deem that the marks are probably permanent.
*rolls eyes at the mishaps I've made*

I'm sorry, I can't remember.

Yes, have used LT on red bags, no problem, per my usually process.
I used O’s O on a red Basic bag that was quite dry, and it made it all splotchy, that never faded or evened out. My solution was find a red bag that didn’t need to be rehabbed.

I used both O’s oil and Leather Therapy on red bags, but I often deal with sad looking ones. I don’t think LT darkens the bags significantly; they might get a bit darker initially, but then they return to their usual color. The thing about red bags is that when the leather is dry it can look more orange or pink, and after it replenishes the moisture, the true color can be a disappointment.

O’s oil will darken the leather, so I use it to even out the color or darken strategically.
