Hey Coach-loving friends! I wanted to ask about this Legacy bag I have. I literally saw it across the building at a Goodwill and I told myself "That's a Coach". And I was right, meanwhile, all the fake bags were locked up in the cases! I paid up for it at $15 but I had been wanting a red bag and nothing beats leather! That being said, it shows some wear and has a couple of white stains of unknown origin (maybe white out or a paint). Hoping someone can tell me the best way to clean it and spruce it up! TIA!!View attachment 4283234 View attachment 4283236 View attachment 4283239
yep as whateve said, give it a wash. Often that kind of white stuff you can scratch off with your fingernail when it's wet. A coincidence: I just bought one of these in olive at my gw. It has been washed and looks great!

What a nice looking red. Always such a bonus when you can find a deal on a bag and it in good condition given that red leather, IMO opinion is a little less forgiving with stains and wear.
ETA , no further advice to give or add to the prior posts!

Thank you! Olive green sounds absolutely amazing!! Kind of really want one now, haha. I bet it looks great with the color of the hardware too. Congrats on your find!

image.jpg I picked up this little cutie at a thrift shop back in Oct for about five dollars. It was overall very clean and looked to be basically unused. However it was squashed just about flat. Oh and also it was monogrammed! I have a girlfriend who had let go of her Michael Kors backpack/bag due to some neck and shoulder pain. And somebody had passed on a Coach signature wristlet that she was getting a lot of use out of. And was becoming a bit grimy. And we had talked about letting me give it a go with Dawn detergent etc. So when I saw this I thought it would be the perfect bag for her except for the monogram. Then I thought oh maybe I can come up with something, and then I remembered people here were using stickers and pins on their bags. So I thought great I’ll keep my eye out for something and I picked up this pin, for $4 or $5 when I was at the ocean city Maryland outlet at the beginning of November. Because the canvas and the jacquard fabric was rather thick I was scratching my head to think about how I was going to make a hole without having any real tools (and not having, say a knife slip and ripping the bag!) and was just about to maybe post this dilemma for help and then I realized a seam ripper might be sharp enough. It was just perfect. I’ll be meeting her for lunch later so I’m just super excited to give it to her.
I can’t say I am a huge fan of logos, but the jacquard is a nice fabric and for some reason, I like it on this little chunky bag. The next one I see for $5 bucks is for me!

Hi all. I was hoping someone would be willing to give me some advice on tackling a restoration of this bag.

It appears to be an 80s classic shoulder bag, made in NYC.

The back has this interesting stain. I have no idea what it is. Thoughts on how to handle? Thanks in advance lovely, clever, talented rehabbers!

Curious to hear what others share!

That looks like a creative spill of some sort, doesn't it?

I am in the process of working on a green station bag with a mystery stain. So far I have dunked it in dawn and done a little spot cleaning with concentrated amount of the detergent when the first dunking didn't do anything. After it dried, I put a layer of cornstarch over and *gently heated* with an iron on low through a cloth. It helped pull out some of the stain. I need to make another go of it soon, just haven't decided what's the next right step.

Welcome to rehab!

Liquid stains like that may not go away. My first thought is, are there also stains on the inside of the bag? For example, is there a dark stain inside the zippered pocket or on the floor of the bag? Could it be ink?

It's a bit of a problem because to do a proper rehab, the bag should be dunked. But the stain could spread when the bag is wet (and in fact, it may have spread previously if the bag was lying flat in water).

Knowing that, if it were mine I would probably take the risk, dunk it, and accept the consequences.

Thank you, wise catbird9. it is strange, I really do not think the stain is in the interior. I will proceed to dunk.

Did you condition before cornstartch-ing, pdx?

I did - apologies, I should have included that step!
My rehab routine is 1) vacuum and de-lint to remove any loose bits of gunk, 2) dunk in neutral soap (Dr Bronner's) if the bag is not too dirty or in dawn if it needs more, 3) stuff with towels to dry, applying Leather CPR while still damp, 4) improvise based on condition/stains - if the bag is in reasonable shape, I'll proceed to applying another layer of Leather CPR as the bag dries thoroughly. After completely dry I'll add a layer of Blackrocks, carefully buffing as I go. In the case of the green station bag, I am held up in step 4 since the mystery stain seemed a bit much for me to ignore (it's right on the flap!).

Personally I would cornstarch before conditioning. Cornstarch removes oils. Conditioner is an oil.
Makes sense! I definitely had the remove-mystery-mightbegrease when I opted for cornstarch. The stain wasn't visible until it was mostly dry.
When I get back to this rehab, it might be time to take the plunge and do deep conditioning with Blackrocks and just accept whatever is left of the stain.

Hi ! I have a Marketing Tote that appears to be similar in vintage and color to your bag. It also appears to have similar stains, see the lower areas. I did a standard dunking followed by conditioning with CPR and an app of Obenauf’s Oil. The stains did not lighten, but did not worsen. Since the stains are on the back of your bag, they probably won’t lessen your enjoyment! I got my tote on a bargain, about $35. Well, at least compared to a listing I saw not too long ago for almost $300, that was roughly in the same condition as mine! The stains are not as noticeable unless the bag is right up at eye level, or being photographed dead on. I think your bag will lend itself to a nicely distressed patina!image.jpg
