They are solid brass but have some kind of coating applied. Both of them have it and I can't get it off with a scrubber in hot water. Luckily the red one ended up a USA bag and I had bought it without seeing the creed. Black one is Costa Rica. Coach is sending new hardware so that will be nice. They said it is brass.
I have used ultra fine steel wool to clean crud like that off successfully.

I don't know if they are solid brass. I think they started using the coating at the same time they started using plated brass.

The new hardware from Coach won't be solid brass.

Looks tons better! Used steel wool. I will finish off with a polishing with the dremel and some compound.

These look much better! So with the steel wool did you totally remove the top coating that was peeling off of these pieces? I have a bag whose hardware looks just like your before pictures and I'm looking for ideas of how to fix it before I resort to replacing the pieces.

Yes I used steel wool and tons of rubbing. I think if I had my Dremel out with a proper wheel then it would have been easier. The steel wool was 000.

Now after Dremel polishing. Yay! Thanks so much for everyone's help. I haven't done the buckles yet. My bags didn't have hangtags but I found the red one for $2 on ebay. It's chain looks grungy next to the polished hardware. LOL.20181210_135056[1].jpg

You can put the chain in a dish of vinegar to soak. Then scrub lightly with steel wool, if necessary.

Could it be a typo? Is it a money laundering listing? I always wonder about that.
Hmm, I never thought of that money laundering thing.

It could be a typo, or it could be listed at a ridiculous price so no one will buy the item, except a certain buyer who will make an offer for a previously agreed price.

I'm tempted to contact the seller or make a lowball offer, just to see if they respond.

All done with the red one. I am very happy with how my first rehab turned out. Brass is as shiny as can be but getting that turnlock back on was a bear. It is so soft now. I think I will try to find bags to rehab that aren't as scratched as this one was on the front because I can still faintly see them after the Blackrocks.

Thank you to everyone for your help!
