About a month ago I got this very old duffle sac.

I am now happy to report that it’s almost done, just needs more buffing, and looking good, minus the strap.

However, I was afraid to even touch the strap - the leather is very thin, and it looks like this in the middle, all cracked up. I can’t imagine it’ll handle the weight if I put anything in that bag... and I do intend it to be a heavy duty bag.

Thoughts/suggestions on the strap? I think even if I restore it somewhat, I won’t use it and keep in case I decide to sell the bag. I thought of making a colorful webbing strap. Any other ideas? Anyone has a 1.25” strap from a bag that was destroyed or turned out to be fake?

I've seen webbing straps that look nice. You could also steal or borrow a strap from another bag. I don't have any to offer. There are probably people on etsy that will custom make a strap for you, as well as people selling used ones on ebay, and a few strap companies like Mautto. I think it might be nice to get something a little different to personalize your bag, especially since that color would be hard to match.

This one needs a “belt” type strap, I’ve only seen guitar straps for sale.

As far as the original strap - to dunk or not to dunk?

I am thinking this. Just need to get grommets and finish the edge.

That works! It's simple and adds a nice pop of color against the clean lines and neutral color of the bag.

I would dunk it using very mild soap such as castille soap. Rinse very well using vinegar in the rinse. Start conditioning right away, while it's still wet. You probably know this already...you did a beautiful job on the bag!

I finally found a Court Bag in red but it has a pen mark on the outside front of the bag. I've read suggestions in this thread for removing ink that include a magic eraser, zit cream, alcohol, etc. I bought this bag because it its rich, deep red color and I'd rather have an ink mark on it than a blemish from trying to remove the ink. I love the bag regardless, it seemed to take me forever to find an affordable red Court Bag, so I don't want to ruin the bag. Should I just leave it alone?

I used a white Pentel hi-polymer eraser, very gently, on a line of ink, and it helped a lot, but I agree that on the red, it will really show up if the dye is removed. I'd leave it or test it out somewhere inconspicuous first. Beautiful bag!!

I would dunk myself. I would probably also use it. I have a similar color bucket bag but I think mine is even more ancient. It doesn't have the rolled edges on the base or a pocket. I have hardly used it because it's so old it's more of a museum piece. I really should just use it.

Anyway, I do like your rainbow strap idea. It looks cute!
