I agree with whateve, a very light coat of Blackrock is all you need. That bag is gorgeous!
Awesome! Thank you, Catbird9. Haha, you're the reason I have the bag now since you authenticated it for me!

Anyone dunked a vintage Dakota before? I am afraid to wash it so I just vacuumed inside and conditioned the surface. Now it's feels usable. View attachment 4164220
It looks a lot better. I don't think I dunked mine but I remember cleaning the suede with Lincoln EZ cleaner.
I agree, it's noticeably improved!
I haven't dunked a Dakota. I vacuumed inside then cleaned inside and out with vinegar on a terry cloth washcloth. I used a light coat of Blackrock on the outside, buffed briefly when dry with a horsehair brush.
I haven't as all my Dooneys are AWL, but I probably would. With pebbled leather, you have make sure you don't get any conditioner stuff in the nooks and crannies. Buff really well. If you aren't familiar with Blackrock, you have to use it sparingly. Put on a very thin coat, then immediately wipe it well with a paper towel. I usually then brush it several hours later to buff. Thanks so much, whateve! I really appreciate your advice
Do you also apply Blackrock to Dooneys made from other leathers like Patterson? I'm thinking of getting my mom the Patterson Leather Aimee Drawstring for her birthday and would condition it for her as well.
The main difference between Sheridan and Dakota is that Dakotas have pig suede linings, so I think that makes it even more dicey. I've never dunked a Sheridan so I salute your bravery!I've dunked a Sheridan which I think is similar to a Dakota and it came out great, see the link below. The bag was filthy and in bad shape but giving it a bath helped a lot!

I had a beautiful lamb nappa bag, one of the tortilla bags. It got dirty when I just looked at it. I decided it was too delicate for me and sold it quickly. I really loved that bag. It was gorgeous but I would have been too nervous to use it.That's a big difference! I've never rehabbed a bag with pig suede, but the second bag in the thread I posted above is made with lamb nappa and I finally had to run it through the washing machine to get it clean and it came out okay, see link below.

I guess a lot depends on how rare and valuable the bag is, how dirty it is, and how much did I spent on it, when deciding whether to dunk or not to dunk.

It was one of my favorite colors toolSounds like a gorgeous bag!
I also have a lamb nappa girlie hobo and it is a beautiful bright red, but it was in great shape when I got it and happily I didn't have to dunk it, because I didn't want to risk having that red color bleed into the lining:

Yeah, vachetta will darken, possibly unevenly with Blackrock. Some people like to pre-age their vachetta.Thanks--that's really helpful! I've only ever used Apple conditioner or Leather CPR and that stuff is so easy to use. This will be my first time using Blackrock. Should the vachetta leather pieces of the bag be left alone since they're untreated?
Thank you! I searched for it for a long time before I found it. It's sad I couldn't keep it.That bag is gorgeous!

Are we talking about your Dooney double pocket backpack? The trim on that is British Tan harness leather, not untreated vachetta. You can use Blackrock on the trim; I use it (sparingly) on all my AWL Dooneys.
There's a good article on caring for vintage AWL Dooneys here:
https://vintagedooneybourke.wordpre...ey-bourke-all-weather-leather-care-questions/
Scroll down and you will see mention of a product, "Dooney & Bourke Harness Leather Polish," once sold by Dooney & Bourke for use on the British Tan trim. The product literature pictured says it was made with beeswax, which is also probably one of the main ingredients in Blackrock.
There are suggestions in the LV thread, I believe. I once found a website that gave specific instructions. I have used vinegar to clean and Cadillac to condition, mostly because it doesn't darken. I think that if you would like it to darken, you sit it out in the sun.I am also interested in the best ways to treat vachetta leather because I may want to age one of my new pieces. I have always pretty much left natural vachetta items alone; maybe a light cleaning and conditioning with Lexol but that's about it.
But I recently bought and rehabbed the Soho Laced Flap Bag below and I have now purchased a Poppy Whipstitch wallet to go with it. I would like to make the color of the wallet match the bag a little better, does anyone have some suggestions? Or should I just leave it be?
