That looks like an early coach bag designed by Bonnie Cashin, where did you get it? It's really gorgeous!

You should post it in the Authentication forum to get it authenticated; does it have a tag inside that says "Coach"? Here is the link for the authentication forum and information about what should be included:

A big ink spot like that is just about impossible to remove. It appears to be on the inside, correct? I'd probably leave it alone.

I would want to give that bag a bath but I'd be worried that the ink would run but perhaps another rehabber has had experience rehabbing a badly ink-stained British Tan bag and will be able to advise you.

The rehab process is pretty straight-forward, aside from that ink spot. Use Dawn dish soap and soak the bag in sudsy water for about 20 to 30 minutes, vigorously massage any dirty areas to clean. Rinse is plain water, drain, stuff with clean towels or rags to shape the bag so that it will dry with the correct shape. When it is half-dry remove the towels and apply Leather CPR to the leather surfaces. After it is completely dry, rub in thin applications of Black Rocks Leather n Rich, let it sit for at least a few hours and then buff with a soft cloth or horsehair brush - that will hide most of the scratches and blemishes.

You can use a metal polish like Wenol to polish the brass fittings. I cannot tell from your picture but is there any dark green gunk around the lock and/or metal fittings? If yes, then the metal is afflicted with verdigris and will need special treatment, but we can discuss that later.

I've only rehabbed one vintage Cashin bag but you can see before and after pics at the link below. No ink spots but otherwise it has the same coloring as your bag.

NIce find, good luck!
BTW, great job on that rehab, looks brand new. You have set the bar high!

Indeed. I'll try the leather CPR and then the black rocks to see if I can minimize the scratches. Any thoughts on the stiff handles? I have Coach conditioner, is that a no no?

You can try surface cleaning before Leather CPR and Black Rocks if you don't want to risk dunking her - perfectly understandable with that ink spot!

You could just sponge off the outside leather with a soft cloth and mild soap and water, or use a leather cleaner like Lexol Cleaner. For the interior you could try non-alcohol baby wipes. I don't know what to tell you about the stiff handles but conditioner should help, is the leather cracked?

I've only rehabbed one bag that had a huge ink spot. I gave it a bath and the ink ran and ran but the spot never went away completely - but that was a dark blue unlined bag - so it wasn't terrible. I agree that washing a light-colored, lined bag that is badly ink stained would be very risky.

I have use Murphy's Oil Soap on all my tack when I used to ride horses, any problem using it on my Coach?

I wouldn't use Murphy's oil soap. We've discussed it before, and I think we decided the Ph levels aren't ideal for purse rehabbing. That is a special bag.

Some people use Saddle soap to rehab. That might be a better option. Personally, I think Saddle soap is for boots or tack, so I don't use it on purses. Something like Lexol cleaner might be better. I wouldn't dunk or do anything to make the ink stain run.

Thanks. I won't use it. Take a look after a quick clean and condition with Lexol Cleaner and Conditioner respectively. It's looking better!!!!

My personal favorite for cleaning leather is vinegar and a magic eraser. Vinegar matches the ph of leather better and won't cause water spotting.
If you want, you can dab the ink spot with acetone. It might remove some of the ink, but not all.

Maybe, but shipping is $12 so it is not as cheap as it seems. It might rehab well or you may not be able to get the stains out of the fabric. I would probably give it a pass but others may have different opinions. It is unusual and a vintage New York City bag.

If you decide to make an offer, be sure to ask about any smells - like mildew or cigarette smoke - because that can be difficult (but not impossible) to eliminate.

Good morning all. I have searched this site and was unable to come up with an answer. I am looking at a Chasin Attache that seems to have the mexican striped lining removed throughout. Is there any replacement resources available for this lining? I fear not, but the bag is a fantastic price so I am tempted. How much would this detract from it's value? There are no indications of any tags. I don't necessarily buy bags for their value, i buy them because i love them, but want to make a wise purchase/investment. TIA

Is it obvious that the lining has been removed? Are you sure the bag was even a Coach? Does it have any markings? I have several Bonnie Cashin bags with the Mexican striped lining, and I think it would be difficult to remove the lining. If the lining was removed and it has no Coach markings, it is going to have significantly less value that an intact bag.
