I think that this is the first entirely patent leather bag that I have rehabbed. I've probably done some rehabs that had patent trim before but this bag is all patent and it got the full treatment because it was filthy - especially the interior.

I gave it a bath and scrubbed and scrubbed and then repeated the process. A shoe repairman once told me to use lemon Pledge on patent leather and that's what I did and it restored the shine beautifully - without leaving any sticky or greasy residue.

I didn't use the spray can of pledge, I used the "Pledge Lemon Clean Wipes - Dust, Clean, Shine" and they worked great. They do have a slight lemon odor, but it is pleasant and it fades quickly. Here's a picture, I got it at my local grocery supermarket.

What a great idea. I think I've used vaseline.

It's a Black Patent Ergo Pleated Framed Satchel, 12520 B4 BK (Retail = $498, 2008). I bought it last October at the Goodwill store for $20 and Beenburned confirmed that it was authentic.

The bag was really dirty especially the inside. I couldn't get a good picture of the interior but it was stained with pen marks and food and a lot of dirt. The outside was grubby and dull and it had a few blemishes but the bag held up very well under the "rough treatment". I would have liked to run it through the washer but I was afraid that the frame would bend.

Here are the Before pictures. The shiny nature of the patent and the sateen lining don't really show how dirty it was.

Here's the after pictures. I probably should have walked away from this one because it will never be pristine - but I am a sucker for kisslocks!

I didn't get any good pics of the interior but it is now clean, but there are still dull and faintly stained areas that I wasn't able to eliminate, but at least it looks a lot better now.

My rule of thumb for a successful rehab is "would I be willing to carry this bag?" and it passes that test - I am looking forward to carrying her this summer.

Looks great! Did you do anything to reshape her? Was there a white mark on the patent?

Thanks! the kisslock and frame worked just fine so I didn't have to try and reshape the frame - I'm happy to say - but the bag was all out of shape. I just stuffed it with towels while drying and the shape returned to normal.

There were a few areas with white marks on the patent, on the bottom and on the back. I tried to clean them off before the bath but they wouldn't budge - but after it had soaked in the bath for a long time I was able to rub them off with my fingernail.

The bag held up well to the bath, I was a little worried because the color along the trim in some areas turned gray and cloudy after washing, but they returned to normal after the bag dried.

Besides the bad stains on the interior, the only serious damage was on the trim on the inside of one of the straps, it had started to peel a bit and the color difference was noticeable but I just touched the area up with black acrylic paint and now you don't notice it unless you are looking for it.

It's got a few scuffs but they are not easy to see.

While I was rehabbing I also gave a bath to this black pleated fabric wristlet. I don't think that I took any before pics but it was dirty. I picked it up at Goodwill for $5. I don't know the style number but it is a retail item, not made for factory - I'm guessing that it might have been part of the Madison line. It has a gray patent hangtag, does anyone know what line it came from?

This black pleated patent wristlet 43247 on ebay looks a lot like my sig wristlet, the retail price was $58,, the fabric items were usually a little cheaper.

I rehabbed this wristlet as a test because I want to give my beloved black op art sig Poppy Groovy a bath. It is my favorite small, light-weight bag and I have used it for years but it is getting a little dull and droopy, but I didn't want to risk damaging it.

This little wristlet has very similar construction to my groovy, they are both black op art signature jacquard fabric with black patent trim, and they both have silver hardware and brightly colored sateen fabric lining.

I am happy to say that this little wristlet came through the bath with flying colors and it looks almost new! The only flaw that I was unable to fix is with the silver coach logo on the front patent panel - it has almost worn away completely. Any suggestions for repairing it? It might be better to just remove all of the silver color than to try and recolor it, but I don't know how to do that - any suggestions?

I put Blackrocks on the corners of my Legacy duffles to keep them from losing color. I had put some on my sunflower duffle; then a few days later, I noticed a black mark. It cleaned right off. If I hadn't had the Blackrocks on there, I think I would have gotten a stain.

I do the same thing on the corners of my boroughs bags, it helps a lot!

Wow! Nice job on a challenging rehab! I wouldn't have tried washing a patent bag. Salutes to your purse rehab bravery and skills! I have this bag in a fuschia color but don't think it is patent.....and it is in storage in another state....need to stop buying bags and ship my old ones to me!

Great job

Thanks! The bag was too dirty to wear and it only cost $20 so I figured - why not dunk it? And happily it all worked out okay! From now on I won't be afraid to dunk a patent bag when it needs it.

How about a silver metallic sharpie to color in the Coach logo? You'd have to be really careful but you might be able to get one with an extra fine tip. I have that same little pouch. I also go it at GW for $5 or so LOL.. and rehabbed it. I use it to stash quarters for the laundry. I don't mind the siggy fabric for SLGs, not keen on it for a bag though.
