Here's a pic of one side of the holes the dissolution of the varnish and glue uncovered on my Dooney carrier. The other side of the piping has the mirror problem. (I know this post is off-brand, but the Dooney rehab thread is a dead letter and it has many of the same posters as here.) I hope to patch it up with glue and paint. Anyone know a good dupe for the Dooney brown?

I had something similar happen to the edges of a Dooney that I dunked. The edges looked fine, I paid $35 for it, it was in really nice shape. The edges basically tore apart after the bath. It was awful! And also tore around some of the bent leather that holds the straps.. basically anywhere the leather had stress it tore like the edging was made of paper or cardboard. I still have that disaster in my failed rehabs box. :(

That's interesting. I wonder if that is what happened to mine, because it looked fine before the dunk. So much for "all weather leather." You'd think it would hold up to being drenched. I only paid $20 for that carrier, but it was my best-shape Dooney. I have bathed other ones and did not have this problem. Maybe something in the varnish weakened it.

I bathed a 1980s Dooney large Equestrian with no problems, so I was lucky. Maybe the more structured, heavy-duty bags like the Carrier were constructed differently, I don't know.

Here's an amusing Dooney press photo (1988?) showing an All Weather Leather bag being dunked in water.

That is amusing! I know that some of the heavy-duty vintage Dooneys have cardboard in them, for example, the Norfolk satchel has a thick layer between the outside and the lining. I found that out when I dunked a Norfolk and the lining floated off, showing the inner construction. I removed it in order to lighten the bag. It did not weaken it.

Hi everyone,

I'm not sure how this forum works so please correct me if I break the rules (I went to the first post and did not see any).

I got this legacy Willis that was authenticated on TPF. It arrived and it's in a little worse shape than I would like but still worth the price for me.

Any suggestions on how to fix up the scuffs on the leather and metal discoloration? I did not realize the gold hardware was a plating, not solid.

I have heard that the vintage turnlocks are easy to replace but on most other bags you have to send to Coach for $40 to do them since access to the parts is hidden under the leather.

Same thing happened to me with a beautiful Dooney satchel. I have no idea what happened. I ended up donating to Goodwill. [emoji22]

Okay so this is really interesting. So, some Dooneys seem to have edging that is not washable. It does seem strange for their leather to be touted as all weather then they have some water soluble edging. Hmmmm

I'm not sure how you could fix the plating. I think if it's gone, it's gone. It's a bummer they don't use solid brass so much these days.

I dunked my 'new-to-me' vintage backpack today and I think it went well. The water was very dirty, so I'm really glad I did it. Now I'm just waiting for it to dry a bit so I can apply the Leather CPR (I also purchased Blackrock Leather 'n Rich). Crossing my fingers it goes well. Thanks again to those who helped! :-)

By the way, once dry will the suede interior cause color transfer on a light-colored wallet, etc.? The interior created more dirty water seepage while I was dunking, so now I'm wondering...

No it won't bleed. I always find bags seem to leak more dye from inside.

Congrats rehabber! Gosh, I don't know about color transfer, I never thought about. I use inexpensive wallets that are medium colored, so I haven't paid attention .
