After reading page after page of this thread I'm just going to ask. I bought my first used bag (#7770 Hampton Carryall) for super cheap off eBay ($13 so if I ruin it I wont cry lol) and I plan on attempting to rehab it for practice before I get into more expensive pieces. It has several small orange stains in the navy fabric (possible bleach spatter, I do not have it in hand yet) and it's leather is scuffed with black marks. I have coach fabric cleaner, leather cleaner and leather moisturizer...which this thread seems to not recommend. What would you recommend I get instead to try my hand at rehab? Are the coach care products ok as maintance on my other bags which are all less than 2 years old or would you recommend something else for that as well? Any advice or recommendations will be greatly appreciated!
For that bag, I would use vinegar and a magic eraser to clean the leather. The fabric will most likely have to be redyed. You can use RIT dye and paint it on. Maybe tape the leather so it doesn't get dyed. I would use Leather CPR and Blackrock Leather n Rich on the leather.

The Coach products are probably okay for maintenance. At one time Coach put silicone in their conditioner, which isn't good for leather. I don't know if they still do. The cleaner is probably okay to use but I haven't found it to actually remove any stains.

Actually this isn't the easiest piece for a first rehab. An all leather black bag is much easier.

For $13 I couldn't pass it up as my first project. Now I'm a little apprehensive after your reply lol. I think after all the posts on here I'll throw out my coach cleaners and invest in something else, better safe than sorry.

Here is the red pre-creed small pouch I got a few weeks ago for just $12.
Awesome sauce. And who better to get it than someone who will use it and enjoy its history! Because that red shoulder sac can't do all the heavy lifting  And we don't have to worry about you painting a Yorkie on it, or heaven forbid, *Bedazzling* it!
And you have put in your time with rehab turkeys, I assume! Enjoy.

Thanks! Sometimes the Force is with me (and all of us, I hope!)

LOL snowmageddon!
I had the worst drive home Friday (and for some of my coworkers, it took them twice as long!). The Nor 'easter storm started dropping heavy wet snow on Friday around noonish. Which means a gazillion corporate offices in my immediate vicinity including mine let out early and we were all battling a slushy mess. I chose a route with less gridlock but slow moving all the same.
So my manager and office accountant started on our boss all day yesterday about closing today when they were predicting the exact same timing / storm for today! Boss begrudgingly closed the office. So grateful I didn't have to deal with another awful drive!

Thank you! I need to stop with the reds. I also have that awesome red Sonoma drawstring. Somehow I feel like I have to be most careful with the shoulder sac - all that smooth leather, it would be a shame if it got a scratch or stain.

Oh yeah, i did see the red Sonama. Another drop dead bag. I know what you mean because I am so overprotective of my red Pocket bag. I also have a red Curtis I need to rotate in.
Another reason I love my Brits. For some reason, I do not feel the need to baby my Oliver and Bancroft, which I bought as close as can be to new, minus one small stain on the bag and handle, for the Bancroft. Go figure.

Wow! Just wow! How did you clean the red leather or it was in good enough condition?

I attempted to rehab a red leather bag recently, and couldn’t get it look not dirty. The stuff that gives character to brown, wine and blue just looked like dirt on bright red. I gave up and used the Obenauf’s oil to darken the bag.

Yes, red is tricky. It doesn't look good with patina. The bag was already in pretty good condition. I just bathed it and conditioned it like normal. There is a stain along the back seam and a similar stain along the top under the flap. I've seen that in other bags from this era (early 1970s). I think they might have used some kind of glue that bled through.
