I was watching that bag, it's gorgeous and unusal! I am so glad that it went at a great price to a TPF rehabber! I think you got a steal! I can't wait to see the pics!

I'm not surprised you noticed it too! (and it makes me feel better that you don't think the price was bad...it seemed reasonable given the rarity, and I couldn't stand waiting out the auction ending knowing in my mind she seemed one of a kind. and when I wrote that post earlier about washing her, I had no idea I was so off on the color - bad pc monitor I imagine). I can't wait to take good photos of her color and shape. I hope my work isn't too cut out for me.

I noticed that it looked dark green on the mannequin but light blue/green in the other pics. I'm sure it is gorgeous. I thought about doing the BIN too because the price seemed quite reasonable, but I refrained. I have so many rehab projects and I can't find time to get to them all so decided not to go for it - I'm so glad you got her!

Got my oil today!! I greeeeeased up that burgundy stewardess (well lightly then wait to rest, then again). I've given about two applications over the course of six hours and it's starting to look really good! I also out some oil on my black stewardess drying and it drank it up.

Just nuts... Right after DBF told me to be careful, I knocked over the oil in the carpet and lost half the bottle :( groan... Might have to buy another bottle for my other projects.

Anyways I'm going to wait overnight but the Obenauf's oil us definitely great for very very dry bags. Only con is it had a weird chemical mess that made me woozy, I hope the smell dissipates.

Oh my! A shame about the oil - though I must admit, my first thought was "I hope it wasn't on the carpet!" as oil is easier to replace than carpet is to clean, IMO.

I'm looking forward to seeing how it all turns out in the end! I have some distressed leather bags that I haven't gotten started on as I'm not really sure how to proceed at this point, so a few more products with magical restoring properties would be nice to have in the arsenal :p and by the looks of your stewardess, I think that's a lot of improvement.

That's a wonderful price for a metallic sophia! I don't remember if I already gave you the link below (?) but I used acrylic paint to touch up rubbing damage on a metallic bag and it came out great. Good luck!

Thank you, katev! I was quite surprised that I won the auction.. shipping alone was around 12, so I thought it was pretty surprising that the bag itself went for less than 80. The bag was well used (the handles have lost a LOT of silver) so it's in pretty amazing shape. I do think it's silver and not gunmetal.. but has gunmetal hardware.

I had bookmarked your acryling paint touch up thread! Your threads are such awesome resources for us rehabbers. I know that's what I'll be using on the handles - do you suppose I'll need to seal it, to keep the paint from rubbing off quickly? I know someone had mentioned sealing paintings..

The silver on the body of the bag is extra shiny! I've had (and returned) a gold coach bag before. I cannot remember the exact name, but it was soft and smooshy and I thought almost puffy.. this feels soft and smooshy but not puffy. More like.. slinky, I guess? I have doubts as to whether I'd find silver paint to match, but I will be looking! I'm thinking paint first, maybe silver leaf/foil, and if I get desperate enough... nail polish? Heh

You would have to ask a moderator about posting a PDF, I have only attached JPG photos to posts. I am looking forward to learning about your process and seeing the pics!

I have been working on a distressed leather bag and I am disappointed with the results. I was thinking of having her dyed but maybe Vinegaroon is the best option!

I've completed 2 vinegaroon rehabs and have written a 10-page illustrated pdf tutorial of the process and results.

Can anyone give me info about how I can post a pdf here?
Or can I post a link to a download the pdf from my business (graphic design) website?

Below are before and after - although I'm still conditioning, conditioning, conditioning!

I have NO idea about pdfs, but CAN'T WAIT to read what youve done. Looks great!

I want to learn about vinegaroon too! I don't know about PDFs either but I just did a search of the TPF FAQ and didn't find anything, but you can contact the moderators at the link below; nice job!

If you could post pics of your bag we might be better able to advise you, good luck!

The only before shots I have are from the Authentification/I.D. shots I took to post for the authenticators. They were shot with flash which makes them seem "grayer" than reality. Sorry, I don't know how to space them so that they don't take up a whole huge area of thread space!!

AFTER SHOTS ARE UP NEXT...so, hang on a sec..... :D

I can't find the black back drop for a true side by side comparison. This was rehabbed using only Leather CPR a few times, followed by Blackrock a couple times, then a couple coats of Obenaufs LP, (which I am liking!!) I have a couple of worn spots that I still want to figure out repair on. The bag had a couple of "tar" type spots glued into the leather. Small, but noticeable and permanent. I tried picking off the tar on the main front flap which damaged the leather a little , but is less dark now. I had to remove some verdigris using a paste of baking sodea and vinegar. It helped -but couldn't remove all the dark lines from the buckle, etc. I kind of like the "beat up" Patina on british tan and regular tan bags, so I'm not overly unhappy with her as is, but I think I'll keep working on some of the repairs she needs. This is similar in size to my Stewardess so she's a great work bag!

She looks fabulous! Did you give her a bath first? Great job!

She looks fabulous! Did you give her a bath first? Great job!

oops yeah that's a good point LOL. Yes I bathed her ages ago with some apple and L-CPR added. She was better , but I just didn't like the shape she dried in...I forgot to stuff her with towels the first time around after she dried (just for shaping during storage). So I rewashed her and tried again. Just a basic dunk in a sink full of lukewarm water and some woolite type detergent. The interior leather at the bottom is starting to want to come loose so I had to be really careful. I think I'll glue it carefully at some point.

I know that I have said all this before (so I hope that I am not becoming repetitious and just plain annoying?!) but I've just posted this info in another thread and decided to move it over here for future reference.

Maintenance Procedure Before Putting a Leather Bag Into Storage

Sometimes I have seen changes in bags that were put into storage in their dustbags for several months. These bags looked clean when I put them away but when I took them out later I found dirty marks, fingers prints, and even the beginnings of tarnish and discoloration on the hardware.

When I am switching out bags I don't always have the time (or the inclination) to drag out bottles of leather cleaner and conditioner and rags to do a full cleaning and conditioning procedure, so I am now keeping "quik-wipes" handy to make the job easy, fast, and convenient.

I use 25 ct Lexol cleaning wipes and the 25 ct Lexol conditioning wipes along with 30 ct Goddard's Jewelry Cleaner wipes , see links below.

The Lexol products are thin and not opague creams so I have been able to use them safely on all kinds of leather (garcia, vintage, legacy, glove-tanned, madison, pebbled, textured, embellished, etc.)

The Goddard's cleaner wipes do not not contain amonia and evaporate quickly and I use them for the hardware.

So now whenever I am putting a leather bag into storage and I don't think I will be using her soon (or any time a bag looks like it could use a little TLC). I just wipe it down with a Lexol cleaner wipe and wait a short while for it to dry. Then I condition it with a Lexol conditioner wipe and again give it a short time to absorb. Then I go over the hardware with a Goddard's Jewelry wipe and let that evaporate.

I generally let the bag sit out overnight to allow the odor of the Lexol cleaner to dissipate and the next day I quickly rub it all over with a soft, dry cloth or towel before I stuff her with tissue and put her into the dustbag for storage. And sometimes, if I am in the mood, before I store her I also grab a needle-nosed pliers and give the chain connectors on the hangtags a couple of gentle squeezes to tighten them.

When the bag is in use I keep the tissue inside the dustbag in the closet so it is easy to stuff it again for storage.

So far this process has been working well for me and the bags have been clean and ready to go when I want to use them again.

When I am storing a fabric bag, I inspect it carefully for soiled areas and discoloration and I spot clean these with Coach's Jacquard Fabric Cleaner.

I haven't figured out what to do with Patent Leather bags yet, any suggestions?

I get the Lexol wipes a local tack shop (equestrian horse-riding store) and I get the Goddard's at Tuesday Morning Stores (they also carry the Leather CPR conditioner.)

I started using this process after I took out my beautiful vintage leather XL mahagony pleated Ergo hobo for the fall and discovered that she had a few dirty splotches, some finger/handling marks on her and she looked dull and dirty in general. Happily she cleaned up well but that taught me a lesson and now I try to do some preventive maintenance on my bags, especially when they are going into long-term storage.
