I picked up a a cool Meyers USA bag today at Savers today...really cool looking - silver woven leather - great condiiton...going to go research it. I saw that Katev had bought one before...I like the connection to Bonnie Cashin even if she didn't design this particular bag.

Hey all! I'm a bit new at this rehabbing thing, but I thought I'd share that you all have inspired me :) I'm having fun so far -- half done with a red Metropolis and a British Tan Court. Finished a red Rambler last week (it's gorgeous!). I'll try to remember to post pics tomorrow.

Quick question for all of you, I've run into a snag of sorts. The Court bag has a very scuffed turnlock (pic attached) Would Brasso do the trick? Thanks so much, all!

Hi! can't wait to see the red Rambler and Metropolis! LOVE red (like everyone, I think). I am somewhat of a newbie but I've washed probably 15 bags so far and I have used Brasso on all of the brass turnlocks - should work fine. Initially, I was taking them off and working on them, then putting them back on the bags but I found it to be a pain.... so now, I've started rubbing the Brasso off while they are in the sudsy water - that way if/when I get some on the leather, I can quickly dunk and get it off! But.....if you call Coach and give them the serial#, they will send you a new turnlock....free! I called and it took 10-14 days maybe, but I got two for the thwo different bags I needed them for. Good Luck!

Ok so I'm wanting to rehab a newer bag that was just really abused. It's an older version of the kristin shoulder bag. The leather needs conditioned and the interior is all stained up. What is the best conditioner? And how do I go about conditioning it? And for te interior shoukd I dunk the whole bag and scrub or just spot clean?

Thank you for your advice! As I am soaking the bag in soapy water, would it be okay to take a toothbrush to scrub the suede interior, or is that not necessary if it looks fairly new and untouched? I want to feel comfortable using it and not worrying if there are any lingering germs in there. Also, would you recommend that I use a microfiber cloth to scrub the exterior light black markings?

I've ALWAYS used a toothbrush on the interior suede! And usually during the rinsing process too, to make sure I get the soap out of the suede. Haven't used a microfiber cloth on the exterior, but wouldn't be too aggressive if I did.

omg, that's great! I didn't know Coach did that. Awesome, my problem is solved :) I just called and they're sending me a turnlock and a brass hangtag for it.

Now I'm off to the store to find some acrylic paint. The Metropolis has a big area of weirdly bleached color on it, and the Court has very worn piping on the sides and bottom.

I love the red bag. If it were me I would wash it before I did any paint or anything. To me it just looks like a water stain, which may come out without any other effort on your part.

I tried :( this is post-bath, it was VERY dirty before. As far as I can tell, something got on that bleached the color out. I don't know what else to do besides try to dye the color back...

When I was bidding on my Gracie, I came across your post, katev and I love that idea...in fact, I saw a cheapish bag with a chain the other day when thrifting and thought of the Gracie but it was too big and clunky....we can still carry it by the handle. I also have bought 2 Royaltons (Butter and Beechnut) and a black with brown trim Sheridan Richmond so I'm getting an Italian collection going....:smile1:

wow hoo! Coach Italian-lovers rule!

Could you post pictures of the bag and the damaged, dirty areas?

A lot of that is tarnish buildup although it looks like damage. Using a metal polish like brasso or wenol will remove a lot of that but you will really have to work on it. Rub, rub, rub, until your fingers ache! Use lots of q-tips and soft rags and just keep rubbing!

This thread has so many pages and I only got part way through but wasn't able to find a specific answer. I am trying to rehab several vintage coach bags and was wondering if anyone had a suggestion to fix the faded edges/piping of the bag where the color has worn out? Is there a way to revive it? Thank you!

These are the steps I use to rehab a glove-tanned, unlined vintage bag. This will darken the faded edging - but if you let the leather dry out again the scuffs and fading will return

I would be afraid to dunk a newer bag but some people have been successful in machine washing them. For a Kristin, you can pull out the lining to wash it. You can get it wet. If there are ink stains, I would work on those first before I got it wet, because water will just spread the ink.

Thanks katev! socmoe suggested that I call Coach and get a new turnlock...for free :) I think that might be the easier (read: less effort-intensive) solution, haha! Thanks socmoe :)

Funny store to share - I haven't been checking the Forum much due to the demise of the TPF app over the last few weeks (the main way I read the posts). I bought a small Legacy/Studio Flap (style 9145) on eBay last week. The seller said it did not have any strong odors but it came from an estate sale so she didn't know for sure what it had been exposed to.

I think it has a little bit of smoke smell but the leather smell balances it out - kind of hard to tell if it's really smoke or just storage mustiness. It was in excellent shape so I just used Lexol cleaner (very easy to use, gel-like in consistency) followed by a damp rag and then Lexol conditioner. As the Lexol conditioners evaporates, it seems to be drawing some of the possible smoke smell with it. The bag is now airing out in the sun (indoors). My kid saw me and she tried to smell the leather strap - oddly enough, she said it smells "delicious!" I hope any significant chemical residues are gone now....

This is the same kid who made me eat my lunch in another room because she didn't like the smell of the broccoli.
