polishing the hardware is my least favorite part of rehabbing, but it really makes a big difference!

I agree...to both points :)

Quick question...I remember reading about the "yucky green stuff" that is sometimes on older bags...I have a vintage Patricia bag and noticed some green "stuff" on the brass main zipper...would the Wenol work on this or do I have to do something else? TIA

Search TPF for "verdigris" and you will find several recipes for removing it. I have found heavy-duty buffing and just digging the gunk out with a toothpick and pipe cleaner to be the most effective methods.

So yes, wenol will help but you will need to do a lot of scrubbing and rubbing and buffing and digging to remove all the green gunk.

One good thing, there are no turnlocks on a PL bag. Verdigris just loves to get underneath the turnlocks!

Advice! I have cleaned my legacy soft zip tote and she looks great except for the straps! They are dark and gross. I've washed them and oiled etc. They just still look awful! Pictures don't even show how bad they are!

OK, here are a few quick shots. My sister wants her Carrier soon, and I must get her delivered to her.
Basically, side by side front and back, and a shot showing the pocket vs. no pocket. Last shot just shows the smaller bag in front of the larger. It's hard to catch the proportions onto a 2 dimensional photo.

The handles turn dark from the oils from our hands. I don't think there is any way to completely clean it off. The only thing I can think of is to dye them if it really bothers you. I have several bags with darker handles and it doesn't bother me.

It doesn't bother me so much as I worry about the leather. .. It's almost crepe-y if that makes sense. This bag smelled like garlic, so at least that's gone!

oh yay! Thanks for posting-they both look great. I love the size of the Musette but I would love to have that back pocket! I would love to expand my collection but I don't think I'm ever going to beat my $50 price.

Here's a better pic. .. One strap is in much worse shape than the other.

I have this bag in black and tan and love them. I really wanted a red one but I'm almost afraid this strap is going to break!

I have straps that looked like this on a really old bag. I sanded them and then used mink oil. Did you try the oil you used on your really dry bag?

I have tried many methods to remove the darkness from handles including magic eraser (I don't recommend it). I've had some success with taking full strength blackrocks (which is also a cleaner, not just a conditioner) and putting it on thicker than normal, letting it sit a minute or 2, and wiping vigorously to remove the excess Blackrocks and whatever dirt it could pull up. that only helped some. Otherwise, I've just left it alone knowing that it was as clean as I could get it and left it at that.
