So I've been spending lots of TLC time with my Bonnie Cashin gal this afternoon. And I couldn't resist loading her up and taking a pic.

First - this is after the latest round of conditioner. I love how durable old leather is!

Next - here's a modeling shot. She's a cute little thing!

And, finally - what she holds. I was surprised...she's pretty roomy! The joys of a bucket style.

I am just loving her more and more. :)

aww...it looks so nice! I think yours must be smaller than mine, mine is a BUCKET...but same color I think. almost orangy? but not.

what are the measurements on yours?

Thanks! I'll measure it when I get home - she's definitely a little thing, but oh so cute. :D

Yep - the color is an orange-tinged brown. Katev was looking at some old Meyers collateral and we think the color may be called Peanut Butter, which is awesome, given that's my favorite food! :p

My Ranch felt slimy and smelled of smoke too. I soaked it for 30 minutes in soapy water. Then rubbed with wash cloth to release whatever was on it. Then resoaked again in a fresh batch of warm soapy water. I must have done it 5 or 6 times. Then soaked several times in cool water to release the soap. It did get a rub down with rubbing alcohol and one more rinse. Then the stuffing and drying step.

Thanks for this information. I think I might need to do more bathing of mine, maybe 5 or 6 times as well. I let it sit stuffed last night and noticed the handle had dried the fastest so I rubbed in some Leather CPR. When I wiped away the excess, color came off on the rag :shucks: When you finally got through all the soaks and rubbing down, did it get to a point where it wasn't releasing color? Just wondering when I will know when to stop.

Yes, I found an article in the UCLA Cashin archives about her Meyers collection and it said that they came "in a variety of colors such as rum, plum, pewter, and peanut butter." I suppose that color could be rum but I was thinking it was closer to peanut butter! Delicious!

Color wasn't obvious in the water but it did release a little bit when I rubbed with Leather CPR.

Yeah - newbie error...just tried to do Wrights Brass Polish on a zipper. Ugh. Glad I found an old travel toothbrush to work the polish out of the teeth. Note to self...get some brass polishing cloths before startin the rehab on my Basic Bag!!
You can also use tooth paste to polish zippers - especially the ones that you are going to dunk later - it is easier to remove the residue of the tooth paste than the brass polish. I use an old tooth brush and brush the zipper teeth - especialy the big old brass zippers.

Okay, so I'm in the midst of my first two rehabs, and have discovered issues with both of them [sigh]. So, I'm hoping maybe you can help me with some ideas.

First up - my Station Bag from 1998. Overall - in great shape and a bath really seemed to do wonders to help bring the shape back to her. However...the back wall pocket with the creed on it has come away from the left side of the bag, so it flaps down into the bag. At first, I thought it was just that the stitching had loosened, so thought I'd find a local cobbler to see if they could restitch it. Unfortunately, as I followed the seam down, about 2/3 of the way down, it looks like there's an actual tear in the leather, so a small triangular stub of leather is still attached to the side seam of the bag. Boo. So, since I never plan to use that back wall pocket anyway, I was thinking that I'd just get some leather glue to try and glue it back into place against the back of the purse. Am I nuts to think that will keep it from flapping down into the bag?

Second...the Pocket Purse - not sure of the year, just know it's from before they started putting style numbers in the registration number, so pre-1994, I guess (so much to learn!). On the front pocket under the flap, there's a small hole in the leather along the top of the pocket. It's not a huge tear or anything, so wondering if I can try filling it in somehow and painting over it? I can live with it if I can't fix it, but figure it's worth a try.

I can provide pictures of both issues when I get home tonight, if that would be helpful? If nothing else, I'm definitely learning what to look for when picking out bags to revive.

We have all learned those painful lessons! Yes, please post pictures that would be very helpful.

Here are some pics. First up...the Pocket Purse. My guess is there may be no fix for this. I'm dying to know how the heck it happened! Poor little thing.

Next the Station Bag. First pic shows the pocket pressed flat against the back.

Next pics show it flopped over. You can see in the close up the little nub of leather still on the seam. (ignore the stray thread I haven't snipped yet - it's from the stitching for the strap loop... I checked and that is still sound and securely attached at least!)

Am I without hope? Kind of a bummer that I picked "problem bags" for my venture, but should hopefully make future ones more simple in comparison!

I had actually saved that same picture that Kate posted when she originally found the archives, I was going to post it if I ever get around to finishing my rehab on her. I had 3 or 4 major projects going, then I went out of town. When I got back I set her aside because she needed a little work, and concentrated on my bags in summer colors.

I just went and measured her, she's not as big as I remember, about 12" tall by 8 across the bottom. She seemed HUGE when I was trying to get to an ink spot at the bottom of the bag when she was soaking wet. I have "in progress" photos of her, I was going to wait till I actually got back to her to post them. I ordered some emu oil, she needs conditioning badly.
