Anyone know: how hard would it be to get a cobbler or something to make a bag strap that matches a bags color? I'm interested in a green Hailey on Ebay but it is missing the long strap. I wondered if I could get one made. If not, maybe a plain brown strap would look good? Anyone done that before?
I know which bag you are referring to and I think it would be very difficult to get a strap made to match. Isn't that bag patent leather? I think I would consider maybe a metallic colored strap to match the hardware over brown. There are straps available on ebay for about $30.

Okay, so the day after I posted that I would avoid cigarette smoke bags in the future, I went out and bought one! I am so weak-willed!

A few weeks ago I stoped at a garage sale near my house and they were offering several older coach bags at rather high prices. I fell for a green Laurel 4112 but they were asking $40 and I thought that I could faintly smell cigarette smoke coming from the bag even though we were outside, so I passed; but that pretty green bag had been haunting my dreams ever since!

On Sunday, as I was driving passed the same house I noticed that they were having another garage sale. I stopped and the green Laurel was still there. This time the smoke smell was very apparent so I offered $20 and we finally agreed on $30.

I know that is too much for a stinky bag but I really wanted it! So now I have to try and eliminate the smell! I am still waiting for authentication but I'm pretty sure it is real. You can see the pics at the link below.

Do you think it would be okay to bathe this bag with baking soda? It's got to have a bath but I don't want to hurt that pretty green color. Help!

That's such a cute bag! I know there's one on eBay somewhere that's WAY overpriced. I'm glad you saved her.

As for the baking soda, I honestly wouldn't expect it to do anything to the color...as I mentioned I used it on the white bags and I can tell you they looked virtually the same after the bat as before, no darker or lighter. The two green bags I dunked had virtually no color loss so in my experience it's not a particularly "runny" color. Others may have had different experiences, but I'd have her in the water (probably the washer, but you know me) with a quickness!

Thanks, I have washed a couple of green bags with good results too but this bag may need some "harsh treatment" to try and get rid of the smell. Oh well, I couldn't carry it the way it smells now so I may as well go for it!

I am still waiting to receive the "Weathered Leather" spray from Sentsy - I wonder what it will smell like!

I would assume that bathing it with baking soda probably wouldn't hurt the colour (it's a beautiful bag by the way), but I am not completely certain about it. I still haven't given mine a bath yet, but that's what I'm planning to do at the moment, is to let it soak and scrub with lots of baking soda since a couple of members here have tried it with success.

Here's the one on ebay in tan. It's been marked down but it is still very over-priced! IMO

Oh, and I broke another one of my "rules" on Sunday. I had resolved not to buy light-colored items unless they were in good condition. But I found this british tan agenda cover at the Goodwill for 99 cents so I bought it, of course!

At first I was thinking that it was a passport cover or travel portfolio but then I paid attention and noticed the wear marks from the spiral binding, so it was clearly an agenda cover. The AT pics are at the link below.

I guess they really are just "guidelines" and not "rules"!

I really like the simplicity of that one-worth breaking your rules for $.99!

This is a non-Coach question but I am hoping that some of you may be able to advise me. I picked up a cute Dooney and Bourke bag at Goodwill for $5. The bag is a Pocket Zip Top in the Rainbow Signature pattern from the "It" collection from around 2004. It is coated canvas with vachetta trim.

The bag is in very good shape but it has turned yellow. I have been told that there is no way to restore the original color when these bags have yellowed. Does anyone have a suggestion for brightening up the color a little? Here's the pics, thanks!

A while back on the AT Dooney thread (I think), I recall seeing a post about restoring a bag with the same problem as yours. There was one at my Goodwill that had the color problem too, but got away from me. I'll do some looking in the morning and see if I can find it. Cute bag, by the way. I hope you have some luck with it!

Thanks! It was interesting because they had a D&B sig fabric wallet with some stains in the case at Goodwill and marked $20 but this cute bag in good shape (except for the yellowing) was out on the rack for $5!

This is my new Stewardess eBay picture. Looks clean but I need a reason to play in water so....her she is soaking in her rinse bath. I will post conditioned pictures in a few days. So excited since I got her for $20.00. Woooohoooo :)

Ok. So, many days later I finally got around to finishing this bag. It was in really good condition. I just wanted to freshen her up and reshape her. It didn't take more than just having Coach send out a new hangtag and some Leather CPR to make her look pretty.

Oooh...that's a different one than I remember. I had it in my watch list for awhile and then finally deleted it. It was Navy. I can't remember the price except that it was pretty high too. I want to say $189?
There was one that I had authenticated awhile back. It went for auction for around $50 I think. Someone, I think it was Demram, said that there was one that just kept changing hands on ebay.

Thanks to all who shared their insights on treating dried and cracked edges on a 1990 Ranch bag.

I decided after bathing her to treat with a paint and conditioner mix my cobbler recommended. While he no longer cleans and reconditions bag, only does repairs, he did offer up some tips.

First, sand the rough areas smooth. Then mix conditioner with the leather refinisher. Medium brown was diluted with the conditioner to give the desired color. I matched it to hangtag.
He warned to make sure conditioner does not contain an alcohol or turpentine that would strip original pigment.

Treating the rough areas first I layered the conditioner/refinisher using an artist paint brush. When it was soaked in or looked less glossy I blended it in to the surrounding area.

Several layers where applied. I could have chosen to fill in the cracks but since leather is pliable I chose to blend in the damage rather than make a scab ( sorry I can't think of better way to say it) of acrylic or glue.

Once the cracks were dealt with the remainder of the bag was treated with the same conditioner/refinisher mixture. It matches the hangtag so I am assuming that the only thing I changed was the "patina" of the leather. I applied this with a moistened make up sponge which was then dipped in conditioner/refinisher mixture.

Finally, when the bag was all dry I gave it several coats of Leather CPR.

This is the before of the 1990 Ranch bag. While she doesn't look new I'm pretty happy with how she looks now.
