Longtime reader, new to frequent posting, but I wanted to share that today I found a Sonoma bucket bag #4932 (big, supple, and definitely authentic) at a thrift store.. it looked like it had been to hell and back.. literally dragged through a thousand mud puddles inside and out :) it was stained to high hell but structurally sound.. no piping damage .... so I was tempted...

They had it marked $9.99 but it was 25% off...what's 7-ish bucks.. nothing... I had it in my shopping cart and went back and forth about it for 20 minutes before I put it back, thanks to my knowledge about nubuck and suede from this thread.. I figured if I bought it to rehab it it would surely take much time and effort and probably dying and possibly re-dying, so I put it back.

Wish I would've taken a photo for y'all.. could've gone down in the rehab hall of shame.. but sadly I left it at the thrift store for someone else to resuscitate. (or not :D)

that's a shame, it's such a nice bag! But you're right, about all you could do is pre-treat it and pop it into the washing machine and hope for the best!

Need some advice on filling in the piping. This is a 1990 Coach Ranch bag. Everywhere but front flap piping is in great shape. Giving her a bath brought out the cracks. Question: what have you guys used as filler? Or did you just condition it?
The bag is still wet in this picture.

Spent hours reading older posts before finally joining up and posting my first question to the Rehab Club - what a great, enthusiastic group you are!

I haven't received the following yet, but would like to know if you think it's a candidate for washing (link below). Is there a link to instructions specifically for machine washing for newbies? I have bookmarked the detailed handwashing instructions several of you refer to in various threads.

Thanks!

I have a Rambler's Legacy. I love this style. I don't think there is a specific area on the forum with instructions for machine washing. You would put it in a pillowcase. I think hand washing would be preferable. That way you could hand scrub the spots that needed it and the bag wouldn't get beat up more in the washer. It looks like it has some edge wear. Conditioning will probably hide most of that.

Yeah I'd think this one just needs a little dunking and spot treating by hand. I'd save the machine wash for badly soiled bags for the most part. This bag in the auction seems to be in overall nice condition and a good round of conditioning treatments will probably do wonders for her after a basic dunking in water.!!

I've read about how many of you prefer Apple and other conditioners over Coach
Products. I have coach moisturizer from approximately 2005. Do you think the formula has changed or did it always include silicones?

And to the rehab pros - do you prefer to rehab a bag yourself or is it Ok to buy a bag the seller claims to have cleaned and conditioned themselves? I suspect with experience that you do a better job than any seller!

I bet all their moisturizer does have silicone, unfortunately, but there's no real way to know if the bottle doesn't say, sadly.

I prefer to rehab my own, myself, but if a previously rehabbed bag shows up at a good price I might risk it if the seller would be forthcoming in whether they are using safe products. It's ok to ask them specifics!. Some of us on here actually re-sell our rehabbed bags and I personally would disclose if I had used acrylic paints for retouch, etc. Some people's version of "rehab" is shoe polish! So definitely ask!!

I don't have an answer about the Coach moisturizer, so I can't help you there. I would rather do the rehab myself. I bought a basic bag and she looked great when she arrived, but the interior had a perfume smell. Into the sink she went, and she oozed brown shoe polish all day long. Interior of the bag had a slimy feel. I just kept rinsing, and used a brush to scrub the inside. I leather dry, used leather therapy to condition leather, thenBlackrock's & Obenauf's to waterproof. She looks great. I think some sellers are well meaning, but their goal is to sell the bag and make it sell as quickly as possible. And shoe polish and silicone do that, but do nothing for the condition of the leather.

That bag is probably mostly dry by now, how does it look? It seems like some "flaws" look better when the bag is wet, some solve themselves when the bag is dry. I'd like to see if it looks any better dry or mostly dry.

That said, I don't know anything about filling, so if it's still really cracked looking after it drys, conditioning might not be enough. Maybe someone else knows more about it?

Hi everyone! I am excited to show you my first rehab! I had this bag authenticated here before buying it on eBay for 29.00! I found out she is a Coach Convertable Clutch circa 1980-1990.
Thanks to all you here who answered my questions here last Monday!
Here she is!
