One of my “younger” bags, this grey Hippie Flap Bag #9134 was authenticated by Hyacinth as being made in 1999. I paid $19.99 at Goodwill in 2008. The leather is much thinner than any of my earlier bags and was badly dented on the front and back. It looked like it had been stacked carelessly by someone - not me - in a closet between some shoes (sole-like imprint on the back) and a purse with a chain-link strap (crinkles on the front)! YIKES! See the before pics at http://forum.purseblog.com/coach-shopping/authenticate-this-coach-694619-719.html#post21935482

But a much warmer than usual bath and soak seemed to remove most of the dents...there is still a faint crescent on the back. Some spots appeared after the bath, but I can live with them...this one’s too beautiful to not get out in the world and be enjoyed! Oh yeah, did I mention how much I LOVE nickel hardware...no buffing required!

My poor little brown Compact Pouch had some serious damage on the strap - probably dry rot, simply from neglect! Paid $7.99 at Goodwill in 2007. Hyacinth estimated her from the late 70s to 87, so she does have some age on her! Previous owner tied the knot in the strap, and I’m guessing the stress from that (and lack of conditioning) contributed to the cracking as well (whodathunkit?). See the before pics at http://forum.purseblog.com/coach-shopping/authenticate-this-coach-694619-723.html#post21941939

I did my usual warm bath with Extra Strength Dawn, rinse, reshape and conditioning with Leather CPR. I posted some of the work I did on the strap here: http://forum.purseblog.com/coach/coach-rehab-and-rescue-club-624452-221.html#post21961667

I finished the bag with Blackrocks and buffed with a brush. The finish on this bag looks more like a leather-bound book than a purse! The next day I dabbed on a little more acrylic on the strap and after a couple of hours, conditioned just the strap again with Leather CPR. I think this is something I can continue to improve...on a rainy day sometime in the future.

My black Compact Pouch has been in my closet since 2006, but I don’t remember where she came from, or what I paid! Much younger than the brown one, she’s in near mint condition after rehab! See the before pics at http://forum.purseblog.com/coach-shopping/authenticate-this-coach-694619-723.html#post21941977

She got the same rehab as her brown sister, with the exception of the strap repair...this one is in excellent condition, no cracks and really supple. I just touched up the edges of the strap with some black acrylic mixed with Lexol so it sinks in. I wish they were all this easy!

This is for slim kisslock tote fans, and especially for chowlover2, for the beautiful autumn colour

Burnt orange tote clean up, two before pictures and two after a bath, condition and polish. She was in pretty good condition, other than a rodent (??) bite mark on the strap and some pressure markings from having something heavy stored on top of her. The bath didn't take the indentations out, but she looks good anyhow.

Maybe a useful tip for people - if you over condition with a wax containing product and get the white residue in the wrinkles of the leather - a microfibre polishing cloth cleans it off really well and gives a lovely buff at the same time.

She looks amazing!! This is a wonderful bag!! I might even like it as much or more than my burgundy..... ;)

Wonderful work! Your collection is just so fun! Your to do pile is getting much smaller. Wish I could say the same!!

She looks gorgeous, Sorry I have been MIA, my laptop died, the replacement didn't work, finally went out and bought an IPad! I'm catching up on all the rehabs I missed!

Mmmm. That one looks lovely! I have a feeling that with some use (pressure from the inside) and continued conditioning, those creases may diminish over time. They may never completely go away, but leather can plump back up again. (I had a saddle years ago with a similar dent on the out flap -- lots of Lexol and use did make it better, but it took a long time.)

Thanks! Yes, the to-do pile is getting smaller, but full of the more intricate bags, 2 Station bags, 1 Willis, 1 Daypack, 2 Janice's Legacies, 1 Fletcher and a few unknowns lurking in the corners of the closet. Plus a Casey, a Carnival and a Court in the finishing stages! Yikes! At least I know my oldest gals are clean and conditioned!

Thanks for the compliment and suggestions! I think you might be right about a little more use and exercise! And as the humidity is on the rise here in Florida, the more she's out in the world, she might plump back up a little.

A little off topic...but has anyone dunked a Dooney AWL? I searched for cleaning tips and didn't get very far, except Angelaria blogpost, which was good. I've got 2 unlined bags that badly need reshaped. Anyone got any thoughts. They're on today's AT Dooney thread. Thanks in advance!

I have good news, but dooney leather is a PIB to rehab. I have tried 2 and was unhappy with both. Let me know how you do so I can redo them right!

Last year I bought a few Dooneys (that I still haven't rehabbed!) and I asked "dreaming of beautiful dooneys" on the ebay forum for AWL rehab advice; this is what she told me:

"Mild soap and water, after you wipe down your bags wipe it again with just water then dry with a clean cloth. DB says not to use leather conditioner or leather oil but I do! I rub my bags very lightly, after all if you dont condition leather it will dry out and crack. The leather used on DB bags is very strong and the only leather I have that has some mild cracks is the original bridle leather bags from the first line of hand bags."
