I wanted to add...
Some cobbler and equestrian shops sell a product called EdgeKote (spelling?) that can be used to replace/repair edging and I know that you can also buy it online. I have never used it but I have heard on TPF that it works well.
I would show the bag to a cobbler or leather expert and ask for advice.
I have seen color land edging loss on some of my vintage rehabs but it is not as dramatic as your bag. I usually just use a matching acryllic paint (less than a dollar at craft or fabric stores) and an artist paint brush to touch up the edging. You can easily wash off accidents with a damp cloth while the paint is still fresh but it becomes permanent after it dries for 24 hours.
Nice bag, good luck and let us know how it comes out!
Thanks katev ... I have bought the edgekote, and had it for quite awhile, just not sure how to get started but I will search the forum here for some ideas.
I actually bought this bag a long time ago & its just been sitting until I've had the motivation to start fixing it up!
Any ideas on what the white "matter" might be? It seems to be seeping(??) from the leather - its almost a creamy consistency, kind of tacky/chalky feeling. The bag didn't arrive with it, it started showing after a period of time, maybe after being exposed to the air because I haven't had it covered or stored in anything, its just been sitting in my closet.
I'm going to try to clean it with apple & see how that works... Just not sure how to handle the white stuff.
