I wonder who ebay uses for their "AI" authentication decisions.

After reporting the above POS from Japanese seller openforvintageusa, I got the following reply from ebay. (The red highlighting is mine):

"Thanks again for reporting the listing(s) you found.

What happened:
We looked into your report and didn’t find the listing to be in violation of our policy. This determination was made using automation or artificial intelligence.

If you reported content that isn’t listed below, we’ll send a separate email once we’ve made a decision.

Your reference ID:
x-xxxxxxx (I redacted the number)

If you have any questions or concerns, just get in touch. We’re here to help.

Thank you for being part of the eBay community.

Thanks,

Fake Duffle Sac for sale by Poshmark seller josclothes_. Reported 2x, but no action yet.

Don't hold your breath waiting for Poshmark or the seller to end the listings! :annoyed: It doesn't happen.

And in fact, this isn't josclothes_ first or only fake. My guess is that she knows exactly what she's peddling.

These were sold:

And these sold bags are likely fake but the seller cleverly showed very blurry creed pictures to hide the fact.

Ugh! That is gross. Reporting all of it. Thanks!

This is my hall of shame, the infamous fake Patricia? The pictures uploaded below are my own.
I did not even ask advice from the authenticators ... reading this forum was enough to draw the conclusion.

On the pictures shown in the original Vinted ad, the creed and item number were badly readible. They look pretty scratched, perhaps somebody realizing it was fake, tried to scrub it.

I trusted the seller, the Vinted platform and my own judgement. The leather looked so thick and smooth and the hardware and zipper looked sturdy. So this was my beginner mistake bag.... and I learned from it, thanks to this Forum and the authenticators tirelessly spreading the gospel.

The number used for this item is: J6K-9951.
The many red flags are mentioned elsewhere at the forum (f.e. posts 81446 and 82860).

I wrote a message to the seller asking for a refund. I am not sure she knew, but I think she did, as she has removed the pictures, whereas other "sold ads" keep on showing them. I am thinking of reporting her to Vinted as well, but first wants to see what her response will be.

If anyone has further advice: allways welcome. And if one of the authenticators draw another conclusion, make my day :happydance::panic:

Fake Patricia’s Legacy for sale by kristinepowerscloset on Depop. Currently in 3 people’s bags. Oy.

Reported this morning. There’s another Coach for sale that may be a fake, but she doesn’t call it a Coach or reference a brand (conspicuously, she doesn’t show the inside either, though). There’s a Dooney too, but I don’t know enough about them to make a call or even a guess on authenticity.

Depop is right behind Poshmark when it comes to (not) removing fakes or responding to reports. They don't care.

This seller has a LOT of Coach bags. I haven't checked them but if the fake posted is indicative of the seller, BEWARE!

I'm not sure Vinted is responsive to reports but if you've contacted the seller (through the platform) requesting a return and/or demanding a refund and she hasn't complied, you always have to protection offered by your payment method, whether you used Paypal (goods and services) or a credit card.

Go to your transaction and open a dispute for not as described. Choose "illegal counterfeit item" as the reason for the dispute and you should win although they'll probably do some type of investigation before issuing a refund.

Although you've learned this lesson too late for my advice to help you, perhaps it can help others who lurk.
  • NEVER buy from a listing without clear and definitive pictures
  • NEVER buy from a seller who refuses to send clear pictures or who ignores your questions
  • NEVER use a debit card to pay for your item since debit cards generally don't offer the protections that credit cards do.
  • Watch timeframes required for disputes so dishonest sellers won't drag on the dispute until your claim time runs out
The order of claims I suggest are:
1. Contact seller to try to resolve
2. If seller isn't cooperative, open dispute through the venue
3. If you can't open through the transaction/venue, go to your payment processor
4. Last resort, credit card dispute and chargeback.

Since you've already been scammed by a seller who knowingly or not sold you a fake, you have nothing to lose by referring the seller here. In her defense, maybe it could have been an "honest" mistake, but since the law (and website rules) require that sellers KNOW items are authentic before listing, she was in the wrong and if honest and honorable, she should be willing to help.

Note that a chargeback will ding her account, she'll also be hit with a $20 chargeback fee for forcing you to go that route.

ETA: I just had a negative experience from a seller I DO NOT recommend. Seller has a green "Willis" bag listed at nearly $400. There are 3 pictures in the listing. Picture #1 shows the front off the bag, picture #2 shows a stock image of a different bag, different style, and picture #3 shows the bottom of what appears to be a black bag.

When I requested additional pictures and clarification, she told me she was away and that the bag would be sold by the time she returned. Well, 4 days later, the bag was NOT sold, the listing is STILL active and the seller STILL didn't post the requested picture of the creed or clarification of the inconsistencies in her listing.

When I wrote back saying that $400 is a lot for a bag without necessary pictures, she told me she doesn't want my business because I'm a nag.

This is a seller I'd strongly recommend avoiding.

Yep. Depop is Not Great about that. For sure. Fun story—not about a counterfeit seller, but a scammer nonetheless: I found a gorgeous vintage red leather satchel there that checked all the boxes for being authentic, but at $75 was too good to be true, so I did my homework and found that the photos & listing text were stolen from a recently sold eBay listing (recent, as in, too recent for them to have even received it and decided to resell, especially at such an inexplicably low price compared to the original). I got curious and checked the other bags—same thing but from different eBay sellers. (Some of this was egregiously sloppy—like using listing text saying that all their bags were from their deceased mother and other text contradicting that.) This was a brand new seller with no sales and a bio that said “Hot deals for the new year.” Ha. These bags were in a lot of people’s bags, too, so I gave Depop a detailed report so they could stop it. I heard back not too long later that their own investigation found no problems, and they’d be taking no action. I got curious yesterday at how it’s been going, so I checked the account again. They’d made now 18 sales, gotten only 1 star reviews, and had all of their listings removed, and is probably about to be banned. Too bad Depop didn’t actually investigate. Could have saved themselves & 18 buyers a real headache. Oy.

Yes, so right and also so helpful. Thank you. I will act on this tomorrow (I am on a European time zone, so going to sleep now... ;>)).

The Vinted seller who sold me the fake Coach (she did not respond) is naomi201710 from the Bordeaux, France region. She has a solid positive review record, but that did not help me. This person has more then 381 designer articles for sale: from clothing to shoes to coats and bags. Including multiple bags from brands such as Longchamp, Kate Spade, Christian Lacroix, Bally etc. Who knows whether they are fake or real.

I have reported her to Vinted, they just confirmed to take measures against naomi201710 for breaching the community norms and selling a counterfeit. I will continue to follow the steps advised above and see how far I can get.
