(Replying, because I was the original poster to whom sparkle was first replying/quoting. I'm the one who plans to dismantle my original keyring.)

To update, I did indeed purchase the dinosaur/record player/feather/skull/earphones keyring, I will be having it re-rung on PCE tomorrow, and since it is part of my Christmas, I will indeed be dismantling it after Christmas.

Regarding the new dinosaur/feather on ebay, as linked to above -- nope, the new one would not work for me. (In fact, a four-legged dinosaur like that, paired with a feather, is actually sort of odd. Or at least, it's completely incorrect based on the fossil records. ;) )

That new dinosaur is a stegosaurus, a four-legged herbivore. On the contrary, I needed the carnivorous, two-legged, therapod skeleton as found on the original keyring. ..... Why? Because the two-legged therapods are what evolved into birds, and there is clear fossil evidence that many therapods actually *had* feathers themselves. T-rex? Paleontologists now believe that he was feathered, especially as a baby. Velociraptors (the hunters and killers in Jurassic Park)? They are proven to have been feathered. They've actually found arm bones with quill-knobs where the feathers attached. .... Proven. ...... Yeah, imagine a giant, carnivorous bird chasing you around Jurassic Park.

See, we have pet parrots (eight at the moment, as we've morphed into a bit of an impromptu birdie rescue). For years, I've referred to our beloved little feather-balls as "our little dinosaurs". When I still worked, I used to have a picture of an archeoptyrex fossil pinned to my cubicle wall. (Archeoptyrex was the first dinosaur fossil found, with feathers.) We even have a tradition in our family... every time a new bird joins us, we, and the birds, spend an evening watching Jurassic Park. Just to remind them of the innate power of their ancestors. ;)

That's why I needed the original keyring, and that's why I'm planning the surgery on it. A two-legged therapod, with a feather, is scientifically sound --- and my keyring will be in honor of our beloved pets. :D For anyone who saw my thread in the main Coach section, the resultant product of therapod fossil and feather, will be hanging from my "Lucky" crossbody. Our flock of birdies is just one of the many "lucky" things I've been blessed with in life.

(As for the four-legged herbivores, like on the new keyring, there is no evidence that they had feathers. And they certainly did not evolve into birds. So for Coach to pair a four-legged, solo, with a feather, makes even less sense. ..... Coach, learn your paleontology!)

(No, I'm not crazy. Just love my birdies. :flowers: :flowers:)
With all due respect, I couldn't care less about about fossils, birds, dinersors or what's scientifically sound. I THOUGHT this was a Coach forum. I THOUGHT this was a fob category. I had no idea science and spelling lessons had any role in this forum.

It's a cute fob. Period. I'm done.

On that one, the feather doesn't really have any connection to the dinosaur. Stegosaurs aren't the ancestors of modern-day birds, only the therapods seem to be.

"The spelling cracks me up: "dinersor""

It's probably a good thing that she didn't try to spell "stegosaur" :D

And how can ANYONE who was a child within the last 60 or 70 years NOT know how to spell "dinosaur"?

DOH! Hyacinth, I think this is the second time this has happened. I replied to the other post, before scrolling down to read yours. But yes, absolutely correct. Birds are descended from feathered, two-legged therapods. The first clue that the paleontologists used, was the hip structure. But the later discovery of feathers and/or quill-knobs in the fossils, sealed it.

Yeah, I have a "thing" about the birds-dinosaur connection. Hence my regretful surgery on the fob. ;)

Geez Louise. Sorry. .... For the record, I never said anything about anyone's spelling, and I have no problem with the seller on ebay. I've actually purchased from him/her myself. That blush leather feather never landed in the American ordering system, so I purchased mine from that ebayer.

I was just trying to explain why, although there is indeed a new dinosaur/feather keyring, it unfortunately doesn't fit what I actually wanted. I'll still have to commit the blasphemy () of dissecting a keyring. I've always had the impression that surgery on an original fob isn't highly recommended, because people fear the re-adjusted fobs might end up on ebay. I was essentially offering a preemptive apology for that. ;)

Deeply, deeply sorry.

I actually enjoy the extra information and reasoning behind WHY someone is attracted to certain fobs. For one thing, it shows the wide variety of users this forum has. I think it adds to the conversation, otherwise if all extraneous chatter were excluded, this could rapidly become a boring list of "I bought this... and this... and this..."

Pfffft! I don't think you need to apologize at all. Please don't let one grumpy post deter you from sharing the reasoning behind the enthusiasm (and the fail when they get it wrong). I have a couple of friends who are paleontologists who would be stunned to learn that this is being discussed on a purse forum and I'm amused and pleased at how the diverse circles I mingle in come together in some unexpected ways.
I'd love to see a post-surgery pic! I'm also committing the "crime" of changing a fob, but I figure my fashion taste / my fobs / my right to do it. Moving things around on a split ring is easy to un-do should I ever decide to sell, but the intention is making something personal to me that I'll enjoy a long time so I'm not truly thinking of re-selling my items.

The seller took my offer, and I bought it!

I love the combo of the feather and the stegosaurus, because it reminds me of my kids when they were young, finding feathers on our nature walks, and they loved dinosaurs, so to me it is a whimsical trinket that triggers fond memories.

Maybe I'm being a little over sensitive but I never expected these types of responses to my post. I've had many successful transactions with this seller and can't say enough good things about her. She always delivers what she promises. She will often accept an offer that I assume will just be declined. Her communications with me are always polite.

I guess I should have PM'd the person who specifically mentioned wanting a dinosaur & feather fob.

My apology if I insulted your seller.

Thanks, stardustgirl :D ;) :hugs:

Yes, I too love the diversity of backgrounds here. :D

And good point ... it'll be a long time til any of my keyrings hit the secondary market too. I don't sell anything. Whenever I part with an item (which is a relatively rare occurrence), either daughter swipes it or it is gifted to a friend.

Wow that seller is a blatant Coach JAX employee. Lol

I'm a bit confused as to why YOU'd be upset because of comments (interpreted as criticisms) about another seller. Why would you care what someone thinks of her listings, spelling or anything else about her?

1. CLearly, the seller is either an employee or knows someone who works for Coach. Thus, no insult there; just statement of fact.

There are many good sellers who are resellers and although members have strong opinions both for and against them, as long as the sellers are getting items legally, i.e., not stealing them or buying "hot" items, there's nothing illegal about it.

2. She misspelled "dinosaur" so I don't see why that would be insulting either.

There are also many good sellers who are human and make typos. Sometimes they catch errors when they proofread their listings and other times, the mistakes aren't caught and listings go up with typos.

I just don't get your taking offense or why it would bother you.

My Found Objects fob that I orderd with PCE arrived today. It came from a store in New Jersey, and was nicely hand wrapped. Momtok pointed out that a month ago, there were only 60 in the system, so if you're eyeing this one, it might be a good idea to snag one as soon as you can.

I have only small bags with silver tone hardware, and I feel the original style of the fob is too big and jumbled and would overwhelm a small bag. I carefully separated out the headphones, turntable, and key ring, and put them all together. I originally planned to remove the skull also, but I decided it would look bare, so I left it on for now. This is how it came out:

ETA: Disclaimer: This fob will never be resold. This is for my own personal use.

ETA #2: I did see the (presumably) stegosaurus and feather fob, but the stegosaurus looks too bulky for me, and I'm a T-Rex kinda girl.

Yep, that's exactly what I'm doing (with the exception that my skull will be tucked safely away with my receipts ... skulls give both daughter and I the heeby-jeebies).

One additional thought ... this keyring, like the leather feather keyrings, and indeed like most recent keyrings, has that lobster claw clasp that's anchored on with the infamous "screw".

Watch that screw ... make sure it doesn't get loose. (I'm going to rig a small safety chain on mine, hidden in the back and made of small split rings, that will further attach the lobster claw to that loop at the top of the heavy chain. That way even if the screw works its way out, all that would be lost would be the screw ... not the charms.)

Good idea! I was going to use a piece of clear fishing line, but your solution sounds nicer.

Fishing line would work too. I just get small split rings in 100-piece packs at the local craft store. I started safety-chaining and anchoring most of my keyrings so that no one can just come up behind me and unclip it from my bag. (Especially with my LV bagcharms. That would be an expensive loss.)

Of course, preventing people with sticky fingers is one thing. But we shouldn't "have" to guard against a simple screw coming out. There have been enough cases of lost feather fobs though, for exactly that reason. (You listening, Coach?)

Thank you! I was afraid I might get kicked out of the club for showing my alteration (lol), but it really does work better for me this way. Hopefully the pics help someone thinking of trying the same alteration decide whether or not to go through with it.
