Over time a lot of members posted tips about what to do when there was some kind of damage to our precious bags. Problem is, that those tips are so hard to find again when we need them. I tought that it might be a good idea to have 1 thread where we post all those tips, so that whenever there is a problem, we know where we might find a solution.

So please everbody: post all the tips that you have ever posted or found on this thread!

Here is a tip to remove fresh ballpoint stains: take a piece of tape (scotch bright), put it over the stain and pull the tape off. Repeat several times. Afterwards: rub the leather with your fingers/dustbag.

Rain water stains: Take a dish cloth, hold it under the tap, wring it out (it should not be too wet!) and lay it over the bag for 1 night (the moisture will go in the leather). Then let the bag dry, not in the sun but at room temperature. The water stains will blend in.

WD40 for the removal of tar/thick oil (like the stuff you find at the seaside). Spray the cotton bud and appply gently to remove the gunk, dont spray the bag!.

Sticky black 2005 era inking is soluble in nail polish remover (major component acetone). I suspect that inking is/has been a rubber based product, which is why it sometimes melts and/or cracks if it gets too hot.

Warning - be careful - the inking comes off prolifically. Also check the fastness of your dye in a hidden area before use.

Tip from MM for serious water marked bags:

fill the bag up with water , warm is better but not really hot !! It does darken the bag all overall but if you empty it at the right time the patina is stunning

Curling flaps in Bayswaters or Ledburys
I believe this tip came from MM.
Put the bag down so the closing flap is flat on the floor. Place a bag full of crushed ice cubes in a TIGHTLY sealed bag and put this on the flap, I prefer the inside. Think this frightens the pants of the flap and its scared to do anything but freeze flat! Not sure why it works but it seems to. You have to leave it for a few hours (so I am saying this again and again: TIGHTLY sealed bag).

oooh. Great tips! My pebble ledbury is getting marked around the handles area with my palms....lotion and make up prob!!! Any tips to try and clean this up??? cheers :)

Sorry if this is a stupid question:- do you turn the bag inside out to do this or fill up the inside of the bag?
