Hi xiangxiang and frou frou,

I use the Laundress Delicate Wash when I hand wash my silk scarves. They also sell a Fabric Conditioner, but note it's "recommended for everyday laundry except synthetic fabrics, silk, and wool". I'm such a big fan of their products, so tend to go with their recommendations.

I hadn't even thought to do a vinegar wash, but we have hard water, too! Likely a good idea to try. Many thanks for bumping up this thread xiangxiang, always something new to learn! :smile1:

Thank you for the recommendation etoile de mer. Will research on where to buy this in my country. It seems like silk and wool don't really need conditioner. I have used a very light hair conditioner on my cashmere and wool before and it seemed to be OK. Maybe I can skip it for my silks.

I read Etoiles recommendations in an old thread and got the Laundress products for both silk and wool on Amazon..they also sell through their own website in the US....Etoile, thank you for the good info.

Sorry for bumping this old thread. Has anybody used conditioner when washing their silks? If so what product do you use? Normal fabric conditioner or any special products? Thanks in advance!

Hi xiangxiang - I used Woolite first and add vinegar on the final rinse. My (H) collection is very small and among them are two bright colored ones - for these I used color catcher too. ;)

This thread inspired me to hand wash my scarves. I also used the instructions (with pics) posted by CobaltBlu in this thread (very helpful - thank you Cobaltblu!)

I used the Laundress soap for delicates/silk that xiangxiang mentions above. Used cool (not cold water). Swished for about 5 min. Ran under cool water until clear. Then I filled the sink up again and poured a small capful of white vinegar and rinsed again. I squeezed as much excess water as I could.

Then, I took the damp scarf and rolled it in a white towel for about 15 minutes, pressing out some of the excess water.

Finally, while the scarf was still damp, I ironed it on a low setting and got the wrinkles out. Then I laid it flat and let it finish drying on my couch.

I did 2 scarves so far and both came out beautifully (whew). I'm going to try to do 2-3 per week and work my way up to the cashmeres which I'm scared to touch.

I also cleared out a drawer to store my scarves because right now my scarves are hanging on scarf hooks in my closet and they get easily wrinkled. I ordered drawer liners and once all my scarves are washed, and my drawer liners come in, I'm going to try to arrange them in one drawer. That might be next weekend's project :)

I only did two scarves so far- an older cheval fleuri and a white licorne but they both came put great.
Thanks TPF for giving me the courage to try this!!

Thanks for all the updated steps and link to the other thread, jyyanks! All my non-H scarves are wrinkly from being hung in the closet so I'm stealing these tips for them :p and for my still teeny-tiny stack of H scarves.

My scarves are a mess too because I hang them on a scarf hanger so I figured I'd give this a shot. I tested with one of my older scarves, just in case. One thing to note, if you don't want to use an iron directly on your scarf, iron it with a white pillowcase on top- it still works. Good Luck!!

Thanks for the step by step instruction, jyyanks! I wonder if dip dye can be hand washed too?

Here are some pics for those who want to see. This was my weekend project and I washed 5 silk scarves. I'm going to try cashmere next week.
