Has anyone attempted to hand wash a Maxi Twilly (or even a regular Twilly)? I am hesitant to take mine to the cleaner's and want to wash them myself like I do with my 70 and 90 scarves, but worry about the fold getting wonky. The MTs are only sewn on three sides… will the fold bubble out of shape when the MT gets wet? If so, is it easy to reset with an iron?

Also (and please forgive me if I've missed a previous post on this), I have a New Libris stole that needs a good cleaning - I don't know what the exact cashmere/silk blend is, but it's definitely mostly cashmere (maybe 85/15?). Am I safe to clean it the same way I would a silk scarf? Or would I be better off taking that one to be done professionally? I am reluctant to go that way as I don't like to leave my H out of sight! :-s

Dryel (or similar) isn't really an option as my dryer has an electronic lock that I can't open until the drum is cool! Sometimes it takes hours to be able to open the door!! :pullhair:

I have washed my cashmere / silk scarves using the same techniques as washing a silk scarf (cold water, gentle detergent, lots of rinsing). Don't agitate the fabric too much so it doesn't pull, and you'll be fine!

Hi ladies, so my question is: do you first wash then wear your new scarves? Or vice versa?

I'm trying to get rid of the smell ... Of new scarves lol! Am i the only one? Just scared that it wont come back to me the same :|

No, it will remove the stiffness if you do that. After a couple of wears the scarf should take your own scent or just air it if it bothers you that much.

I wash my H silk scarves by hand with baby shampoo. Handwashing also re-plumps up the hems. I learned this on thelaundress.com.

awesome, thanks! Baby shampoo to every rescue! I use it to clean my makeup brushes, too. The interesting thing about baby shampoo is that it wrecks my kids' skin. Good for just about everything else, though (except an actual baby).

Careful with the baby shampoo ladies, it's typically designed to match the pH of tears to be eye-friendly, so around 7. Whereas skin and hair fibre is 4.5-5.5 so it really isn't 'gentle'.
On human hair fibre it blows out the cuticle layer, it looks like a dry pine cone if you look at it under a microscope, so it feels soft and fluffy but is actually more prone to damage.

Thanks for the replies TGG & CWV. I guess no baby shampoos too!

I wouldn't say all baby shampoo because not all are tear-free but most brands are.
Just an example of how harsh it is to hair fibre and synthetic color, it actually breaks disulfide bonds, just like ammonium thioglycolate in a perm. Before I got into my current medical career I used to be a platform hair colorist and did numerous demonstrations when I was teaching on how you can achieve S formation curls using baby shampoo (specifically Johnson & Johnson) to do a perm, it's that strong.

I use very, very little baby shampoo with ice cold water - just a couple of drops. Dry cleaning is just very harsh, and the chemicals irritate the skin on my neck.
If you know of something milder than baby shampoo, please let me know. :smile1:
