Hi everyone, just to check do you know if the Pegasus charm in PM size with a touch of exotic (alligator) on the wings require the CITES certificate?

When I purchased mine from the H store directly, they mentioned it was too small piece of a leather, therefore, there’s no CITES being issued for it.

However, I saw on YouTube recently and one lady who purchased the same charm but in MM size actually had a CITES being issued for it.

Would greatly appreciate your kind advise on this

I thought you now need CITES for all skins on the list no matter how small. Gucci gave me one for a card case (croc) I would call Hermes to double-check.

Apologies for OT, but may I ask, for an older, obviously used exotic bag, does a person still need to carry cites? And would a pic on your phone be okay? TIA

I bought a rodeo touch last May 2022 and received a CITES. You should contact your SA since she likely was mistaken .

When I purchased my rodeo touch, it came with cites and my SA advised that all exotic H from store come with cites because they have to in order to clear customs

Thank you for all your advise. This is interesting but at the same time slightly frustrating as I purchased mine directly from the Paris boutique when I travelled there and my SA confirmed with another SA whether a CITES is required and they both said no. So I returned to my home country without a certificate being issued  I am not too sure what to do as I did not purchase it from my home store.

@papertiger Also, I didn’t know that all kinds of pieces with some exotic leather needs CITES. I actually bought a watch from my local VCA boutique last year in which the straps are croc leather straps but I didn’t get any CITES to go with them at all :O

So very odd and honestly first I’ve heard of an SA saying cites are not standard. I would definitely give them a call to ask for one. Sorry that you are now dealing with this post purchase.

I apologize if this has already been addressed in this thread, but I just wanted to confirm before I actually make my trip! I am a US citizen and I will be traveling from the US later this week, landing in Italy. I will be driving from Italy to France and flying home from France back to the US. I am really hoping to take a lizard Roulis that I recently purchased from the boutique. Am I correct that if I have the copy of the CITES provided to me in store and if I carry it in the dustbag in my carry-on, that I should be fine on this trip? I was also planning to take a copy of the receipt. Any guidance or confirmation of my thinking would be greatly appreciated!! Thank you!

Does anyone know the year that CITES came into existence, this is essential for vintage Hermes items. I am wondering because I do have a vintage (1989) K croc that did not come with a CITES. If indeed I was stopped at customs would I explain that first of all it is my own hand luggage (not importing or exporting) and secondly as it is vintage it did not come with a CITES

Thanks for your help.

@emilyjb20, I do believe that you are correct. As long as you have the CITES and the receipt you will be fine.

I got a cites even for my Paris loafers which are part croc - so I guess it must be issued for all pieces with any element of exotic leather. Not sure what happens with other brands but I guess they also issue the CITES.

I think for travelling, you should at least carry a copy of the receipt and cites but if personal goods many people say this is acceptable. However technically there are specific documents (export/ import licences specific for each country) that are needed - which are a nightmare to obtain - if you meet the wrong person on the wrong day things can get hairy. I avoid carrying exotic bags abroad.

For lizard, you should be fine. You are actually more likely to be asked to show the receipt when you re-enter the US as exotic bags tend to attract the attention of CBP. Hope you have a wonderful trip.

Yes, I have been concerned but I have talked to enough officers with the Dept. of Fish and Wildlife, as well as CITES that I think I should be okay.

Simply not true. CITES does not matter as long as you keep it or sell it within the country you live in. Even with CITES, the import or export of exotic skin bags is annoyingly difficult, and you need a new permit every single time from the destination country. Trust me, I know, because I have done it.

I have to mention that pretty much all super-vintage exotic bags don't have a CITES certificate either, simply because it didn't exist when the bags were made. If you love an exotic bag, and the price is good, BUY it. It's a common misconception that a missing CITES devalues a bag. You don't need it to travel either as long as the exotic bag is used as your personal luggage.
Looking back at my pre-Covid travel, the customs officers of Australia, USA, Germany and UK stopped me to ask if I have CITES for my former fendi Lizzie peekaboo bag, my carry on bag (no way am I squashing it with the cabin luggage) .

Once, I forgot that I misplaced the paper inside my checked in luggage instead of the bag itself. Customs in Australia told me I can’t leave with it until I find the paper or a receipt from the boutique so they can call up. Fortunately, I found the paper and received a long lecture on always carrying my CITEs cert.

SO YES, they can take ‘personal luggage’ away without CITES.

Customs in Australia are particularly vigilant.
US CBP in SF …saw them cut a watch strap (think it was croc or ally) …the owner was very upset and caused a commotion. I was behind queuing for screening. Apparently CBP thought the watch fake as well and the owner alleged it’s real. They let the man pass with his Watch minus strap.

Then they looked at my bag on my shoulder and before they can say anything, I handed them the cites documentation.
