Do all exotic purchases come with a CITES certificate? Just realized my ostrich K purchase from a US boutique didn’t come with one. Is this going to be an issue if I bring it on international travels?
I'm not sure ostrich is still on the list

I purchased an Ostrich Calvi in the US in February 2020 and it did not come with a CITES. I do not believe Ostrich is considered an exotic requiring CITES.

Ostrich isn’t considered an exotic and is not subject to the same requirements of a CITES certificate. Ostrich is exotic adjacent lol.

I’ve never read of a successful case of someone getting a replacement cites from H.

If a bag is made from a skin that should have a CITES certificate, you would be unwise to buy it without. However attractive it might be, leave it alone.
Smilarly a reputable seller should not dream of dealing in good that require CITES accreditation if it is missing.

There are different species of ostrich, some are protected while some aren’t. Hermes uses farmed ostrich that is cites exempt. Delvaux gave me a cites paper to travel with to prove its origin, which H should be doing.

Simply not true. CITES does not matter as long as you keep it or sell it within the country you live in. Even with CITES, the import or export of exotic skin bags is annoyingly difficult, and you need a new permit every single time from the destination country. Trust me, I know, because I have done it.

I have to mention that pretty much all super-vintage exotic bags don't have a CITES certificate either, simply because it didn't exist when the bags were made. If you love an exotic bag, and the price is good, BUY it. It's a common misconception that a missing CITES devalues a bag. You don't need it to travel either as long as the exotic bag is used as your personal luggage.

And to answer the initial question. No, Hermès will not do the work again to get you a new CITES certificate. But you can apply for one in your countries CITES department. Its costly, takes time, several documents and it all depends on whether the bags origin can somehow be proven and therefore the leather can be tracked back to have been legally obtained, OR it can be proven that the bag is older than the CITES convention itself.

Most exotic bags are hand-carried across borders as personal luggage. This way it is perfectly legal, and no documentation or proof of anything is needed. That is as long as the bag is actually being used, and not all wrapped up clearly unused.

i personally wanted to apply for a CITES once, but chose the latter option in the end as it was cheaper and faster. I'm not saying it's the best, but if you love a bag and you really want it for your personal use, then just go for it. Nobodys holding you back.

Hope this helps.

You don't need a CITES if it is for your own personal use. If you love the bag, and the price is right, go for it. You don't need it to travel as long as you hand-carry it and it's visibly being used for your own personal needs. But no, Hermès will not do the work and pay the fees to get you a new CITES, you'll have to do that yourself in your countries CITES department, and it is expensive and takes long, and theres no guarantee. But it doesn't mean you cannot use, love, and even sell the bag later on.

This depends on the country! (I have been asked to show documentation when reentering Canada).

That shouldn't have happened. They can ask for it, but as long as it is your personally used handbag, they have no right to seize it, even with missing documentation.
For personal use it depends on which schedule the animal is from (which level of cites protection it is assigned).

As per Canadian Law:
Personal Effects and Household Effects

15 (1) Subject to sections 16 and 18, an individual is exempt from holding an import or export permit issued under subsection 10(1) of the Act for any animal or plant, or any part or derivative of one, that is listed in Schedule I but not in Schedule II or Schedule III and that is a personal effect or a household effect, except
